20 Kilometres Walk in Rome. The function recognised the 40th Anniversary of the first time Ilford AC completed a team in a 100 Miles' Walk, with all 3 members of that team were present: Dave Neagle, Alan Barber & Dave Ainsworth, plus attendants Peter Hepworth & Tony Perkins. At the function were 4 walkers who'd finished 2nd in a London-to-Brighton walk, 3 former winners of a UK 100 Miles Walling Championship, an Olympian & European Games bronze medallist and a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist - that being former Ilford AC President Bill Sutherland BEM. A group photograph was taken after the function of The Centurions present. A TASK WELL EXECUTED by D. Ainsworth

Centurion 789 Olly Browne completed his 100 Miles' Walk on an out-and-back course along Marine Parade in Leigh-on-Sea on Saturday & Sunday (20th/21st September) in 22 hours and 41 minutes. This delightful setting overlooked the Thames Estuary with unspoiled views to Kent. Olly's a proud member of The Centurions and has his Number tattooed on an arm! In 2010 on the same course he raised a considerable sum for Help-for-Heroes. This time his cause was Essex Air Ambulance and donations + pledges now reach over £8,000. As was the case 4 years' ago, a number of race walkers appeared at various times to accompany Olly for periods of time and offer their encouragement. Weather was kind to Olly as not a drop of rain fell...had this event been 24 hours' earlier, thunder, lightning and rain would have hampered progress! This feat was one of a number Olly's tackled to celebrate 2014, the year of his 60th birthday. Olly resides in Leigh-on-Sea, so it was a case of "Local Man Makes Good". As well as race walkers, many other supporters, family and friends attended with music laid-on to create a carnival atmosphere. After a well-earned afternoon break, Olly and his supporters, back-slappers and well-wishers assembled at "The Ship" in Leigh for an evening celebration social.

Church to Church by R. Elliott Titles Defended by Men’s and Women’s Champion It was a case of been there, done that as the two winners replicated their wins from 2013. Jonathan Hobbs of Ashford AC and Angela Martin of Surrey WC winning the 2014 men’s and women’s Church to Church titles. Jonathan was one of the pre-race favourites along with local walker Jason Le Noury and true to form it was these two that made the pace for the first few miles up the hills of Hauteville and Les Vardes to St Martins Church and on towards the airport. After passing 3 miles in 30.48 together, they had a 14 seconds lead on third man Jim Ball, with a big gap back to fourth place contenders Chris Hobbs and Phil Lockwood in 32.13. Angela Martin was the first woman, well ahead of local walker Marie Macdonald. Over the next few miles, as the course flattened out, Jim Ball, a past winner of the event, had caught the leaders and had a brief moment of glory as he led them through 5 miles by ten seconds. He probably knew it was only going to be a brief lead as he had not expected to go the full distance as he is still recovering from recent knee surgery. Ball soon fell back as Jason Le Noury moved ahead to lead Hobbs by 50 metres at 8 miles. The younger walkers Le Noury and Hobbs looked full of energy, with Ball struggling. The small gap was soon breached as by 10 miles at Les Vauxbalets, Hobbs had taken the lead and went through in one hour 35 minutes and 53 seconds, only strides ahead of Le Noury. Ball had dropped to almost two minutes off the pace, with Chris Hobbs and Phil Lockwood still together a further six minutes down. Angela Martin looked a good bet for first woman home, even at this stage, going past the 10 miles in 1.56.37, alongside husband Malcolm. Taking in the hilly section of the course from St Andrews to Castel and then down towards Vale Church, either of the first two could still be in a chance of victory. Within sight of each other for all this part of the race the two at the front were still looking relaxed. Passing Vale Church and 15 miles Jonathan Hobbs, as last year, strode into view first with a time of 2.22.17 and as last year Le Noury followed him by almost the same margin of 17 seconds. Times at this point were down on last year as the hot and humid day affected most of the competitors. Suffering more over the final miles Le Noury had to give second best to Hobbs as a victorious Hobbs crossed the line in 3.04.19, after moving well along the seafront finish and fighting his way through the crowds on the closed road section outside the Town marina and on to South Esplanade finish. Jason Le Noury finished an easy second in just under 3 hours six minutes, with Jim Ball in third in 3.19. Father of the winner, Chris Hobbs outkicked local walker Phil Lockwood for fourth place, winning their individual race by five seconds. Frans Leijtens, in his second Church walk looked surprisingly fresh after he finished in 3.32. Surprisingly, because the previous weekend he had raced 135 miles (one hundred and thirty five miles) in three days followed by a 3 kilometres sprint in Guernsey the Friday evening before the Church to Church. Masters walker Glyn Jones, Ed Shillabeer and Sean Pender all finished within one and a half minutes of each other. Ed Shillabeer finishing just outside the All-comers Age Best time for his group. The race for the next position was between husband and wife Angela and Malcolm Martin. Malcolm did not wait coming down the home straight this year and were split by three quarters of a second in Malcolm’s favour. They were closely followed by Isle of Man and past Guernsey resident, Terry Bates. The Martins times were only twenty seconds down on their efforts the year before. A few minutes down was an isolated Micky Harran, after being dropped by the Martins around the halfway point. There were four walkers within forty seconds of each other next as Peter Beckerleg in 4.06.50 outlasted the fast finishing David Hoben and John Dedman, with Sailash Shah just behind. Beckerleg removed around 12 minutes from his previous best time set last year opposed to most of the walkers who were down on their best times, adding to his personal best from the 3 kms held two days earlier. Local John Dedman, really suffered in the second half of the race, as an ambitious start saw him in the company of Ed Shillabeer for the first half of the race reached in 1 hour 48.

Church to Church cont’d Kevin Le Noury added another finish to his impressive list as he finished for the 39th time. At the back of the field 80 year old Eric Horwill, the RWA President, after taking a recent break from racing, walked to finish in 5 hours 25 minutes. In the women’s race, local Marie Macdonald had a good day. In her first season of race walking she finished second overall and first local home in 4.04.56, four minutes ahead of Jayne Le Noury. Marie laid claim to a family record as she recently discovered her grandfather’s time set back in the early fifties, after hearing his stories of the walk as a child. Three walkers from the Island Health Team, as part of a year long challenge all finished the course. Debbie Duquemin took the honours ahead of Mary Collins and Pauline Hogg, separated by Sarnia walker Kay Coulson. Thanks go to all the walkers, officials and helpers on the day and to our sponsors as another successful Church to Church ended. Thanks to our walk sponsors Bucktrouts (Walkers Crisps), Relate Network Insurance, Healthspan, Rothschild, Electrical Supplies & Machinery (Guernsey) Ltd ,Guernsey Candles, Taj Mahal Restaurant, Ogier Fiduciary, Fusion Systems, Trust Corporation, Jenny Elliott, Fletchersports, Kemp Le Tissier Chartered Accountants. Saying “Yes” to Inter-dependence by A. Fraser What a year in Scotland! The Glasgow Commonwealth Games takes the cake, I’d believe. What legacy will it leave behind? That ‘feel-good’ factor? For sure. Queues of talented youngsters wanting to be our next Champions? Naturally. Stories of passion, determination, perseverance, desires? You bet ya! Dreams of inspiring others? No-brainer. But this is no legacy. On the 1st of September, Scotia Race Walking Club was born. To mirror the famous Martin Luther King quote: “I have a dream!” A vision I have shared with umpteen folk for more than 3 years, has now become a reality: To have a Scottish race walking ‘circuit’ on the Scottish Athletics map. The ‘birth’ of the first Scottish race walking club in an extremely long time (a good few decades is my guess) starts to make this dream come alive. But I don’t really want to linger in the past. History is great, but not very helpful to our cause right now, is it? Basically, it’s because we regretfully don’t have much of a race walking history in recent decades (there are the odd exceptions, naturally). So would you extend a hand of friendship and camaraderie by welcoming on board the Scottish Athletics-affiliated club, Scotia Race Walking Club? I am whole-heartedly taking advantage of that fact that we don’t have any real history to fall back on. “How do you bake a cake without ingredients?” Easy. Go find them! OK, so that’s way easier said than done. But that’s how we have kick-started things: “From acorns, do great oaks grow.”

Saying “Yes” to Inter-dependence cont’d We have no infrastructure up North. There is a less-than-tangible race walking ‘culture’ to rely on. The last 2 or 3 years has seen us moving from being viewed as a ‘one-pony-race,’ a ‘circus trick,’ to one where we are now seen as part of the whole athletic ‘landscape.’ Simply by just being seen, just being there. In fact, I have no hesitation in saying that we are rapidly becoming more-and-more respected with time. OK. You’d be right. Microscopically-small fry in a big pond, but we are here now. To stay! There are no blue-prints to follow. No similar Scottish clubs to mirror. Great! We can mould the mould in the way we believe it will best fit the Scottish scene, now and for the future. OK, so let’s go back in time (yeah, yeah, I hear you saying ‘History’). In the ‘early’ days, the biggest trick I faced was this Scottish conundrum: There are no race walk races because there are no race walkers . . . . And . . . . There are no race walkers because there are no race walk races. So we now have race walkers (and a mighty happy bunch they are), and a smattering of un-judged races, so the momentum has started. Now for the second permutation: How can we have official (judged) races, when we have no race walk judges? You can imagine the number of logistical hoops and hurdles Scotia Race Walking Club will have to deal with. But we’re doing that right now. It will be a 3 year stage this will be performed on, so you’ll see many acts come and go. The finale is to see a fully-judged ‘A’ race organised, managed and judged by a full Scottish contingent. And it will appear in the newspapers’ results pages. Just watch this space. Standing ovation deserved? Only time will tell. You really need to bear in mind that we are a very small club, a tiny committee, and we cover an enormous geographical area (Scotia RWC is non-geographically-based, by the way). Consider the following if you will. We have no officially-registered coaches in Scotland. Currently, it is only myself and one other Scotia RWC member that are currently ‘filling the gap,’ so to speak. How are we realistically able to ‘coach a whole nation?’ A nation consists of everyone able to walk, so I am guessing the niché in the Scottish athletic market-place amounts to about 3.8 million people. Does it matter whether they’re 5 or 95 years old? No. absolutely not. So am I making history? I suppose yes, I am. But I’m not one to delve back in the past. My bright vision is a 20-year dream. It’s one that encompasses anybody interested in race walking (to any level). It embraces any club, county or town wanting to invite race walking into its fold. Scotia RWC is an open and inviting club, aimed at bringing an athletic discipline into as many people’s lives as it can, while nurturing those with talent to reach the pinnacle of our sport. What 3 pillars will drive all that Scotia RWC stands for? Goals. Variety. Fun. Embrace this, you embrace long-term success. “Is this going to be easy?” Easiest question to answer so far:

Saying “Yes” to Inter-dependence cont’d “No, absolutely not . . . but we’re up for the challenge. We Scots are renowned to never going down without a fight.” With the correct support from Scottish Athletics, the wider athletic community, and Joe Soap & company, we will succeed. We will have Scottish race walkers at future Commonwealth Games. We will develop wee Mary into an athlete that simply loves taking part, just because. We will be there. Our numbers will grow. We will be noticed. We need everybody in this to help us succeed. We must all be winners. We’re all in this together. So, are you going to say “Yes” to inter-dependence? I hope we’ll get your vote. Wow! What a day to be writing this article (Thursday 18 September 2014 at 06h00 when the voting stations aren’t even open yet)! Thanks Andrew Fraser

Chris Maddocks is the only man in British athletics history to have competed at five Olympic Games. It

was so nearly six. This book is touching and sad in places; other times amusing and inspirational.

Achieved on a shoestring budget, this is no rags to riches story, rather an irrational pursuit of patriotic glory.

The author gives himself no place to hide in this candid account of his life in sport. Written with a literary

narrative, this captivating autobiography bowls along through the decades; vivid, evocative descriptions of

formative years, a student life less ordinary, arduous training schedules, worldwide travel, meeting famous

people, and where a world of sport, drugs and politics were intertwined. Discover how the unlikeliest of

men unexpectedly left an indelible mark on Olympic folklore in his swansong race.

“Chris Maddocks remains one of the unsung heroes of British Athletics...the book contains plenty of

colourful tales and various adventures bumping into some of the biggest names in track and field at the

greatest show on earth.” Athletics Weekly
