SHOE REVIEWby Cregg Weinmann

Trail Shoes Winter 2015–16Here’s our semi-annual look at a sampling of shoes designed to grip and tame trails: some for training, others for faster running. The mix includes 5 new models and 3 updates. Trails vary considerably, and not surprisingly so do trail shoes. It’s a good idea to match your shoes to the running you’ll be doing. If you like protection on the roads, start with Responsive Trail shoes. If you like speedier Performance shoes on the road, Performance Trail may the best place to start. As always, this review is a starting point in your search for your best trail shoes. Follow it up with the help of a Specialty Running retailer whenever possible. And don’t forget to check www.runningproductreviews.com for periodic updates and special features.

361º Ortega $120 e new 361º Ortega brings the brand’s technology to the trail. e upper is closed mesh with no-sew welded overlays supporting the shoe, an extended saddle that’s light and secure. A traditional toe bumper, rearfoot and eyestay supports, and a full rand add security and protection, and an external thermoplastic heel counter adds stability. e midsole is low-pro le, molded EVA, with 361º’s Quickfoam element lending extra cushioning. e outersole is low-pro le carbon rubber, textured for grip, in a thin con guration that’s surprisingly tough. e forefoot of the outersole is bonded to a spongy layer of polyurethane, adding a bit more cushion to the ride as well as an ability to conform to the trail surface. e combination of quality materials, e cient design, and a comfortable and adaptive ride make the Ortega a worthy contender for trail performance.

“Snugs well to the foot with good protection. Sure-footed on the trail, and does really well getting there, too.”

Responsive Trail NEW Sizes Men 6–12,13,14; Women 5–12 Weight 11.5 oz. (men’s 11); 9.4 oz. (women’s 8) Shape semi-curved Construction Strobel slip-lasted Recommended for medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

Brooks Pure Grit 4 $120 e Pure Grit is the lightest of Brooks’ trail running shoes. e upper is a tight, closed mesh with 3D-printed overlays providing some structure and a layer of protection. e supportive midfoot strap (Brooks calls it the Nav band) adds a snugger midfoot t, while still exing enough to accommodate di erences in foot volume. e chassis carries over from Round 3: a low-pro le layer of BioMoGo foam with DNA added to the mix for very good cushioning. A forefoot rock plate between the midsole and outersole o ers protection from rocky trails. e outersole features the same hexagon-shaped lugs, as their bite tames trails e ciently and e ectively. e Pure Grit 4 is a solid performer that ts well, performs well, and carries the Brooks trail tradition well.

“Good, close fi t all around. Flexible enough with decent traction. They did a great job for my weekend trail runs.”

Performance Trail Updates Pure Grit 3 Sizes Men 8–13,14; Women 5–11,12 Weight 10.9 oz. (men’s 11); 8.8 oz. (women’s 8) Shape semi-curved Construction Strobel slip-lasted Recommended for medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

HOKA ONE ONE SpeedGoat $140 e new SpeedGoat sports geometry and traction designed to go as fast as you can, thanks to the developmen-tal input of Ultra trail star Karl Metzler. e upper is a tough minimesh with lacing that extends down to the toe for extra security. No-sew overlays lend support overall and add a bit of design air while keeping it light. A traditionally stitched toecap features an added layer of ground rubber for abrasion resistance and protection. e ankle collar is cushy and improves the heel t. e midsole is a soft, thick layer of injected EVA that absorbs shock and conforms to the terrain for a protective and sure-footed feel, in combination with its 5-mil-limeter geometry, and is resilient enough for good response and durability. e outersole is a luggy pro le of Vibram® Megagrip® rubber—a new compound and partnership for the brand—that o ers really good traction. e SpeedGoat succeeds for runners looking for traction, cushion, and a snug, secure t to nish fast.

“Looks sports-car fast. I really like how easy the upper is to open up and then tighten down on the shoes. The midsole [is] cushy and protective; the traction is just right.”

Performance/Racing Trail NEW Sizes Men 6–13,14,15; Women 5–12 Weight 10.3 oz. (men’s 11); 8.2 oz. (women’s 8) Shape semi-curved Construction Strobel slip-lasted, EVA Strobel board Recommended for medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

Mizuno Hayate 2 $110With its e ective construction, fun graphics, and strong trail performance, the Hayate has been a breath of fresh air for Mizuno trail running. Round 2 takes a bit more traditional approach, at least in appearance, while maintaining the strengths of the original. e upper is open mesh with traditional, supportive overlays and a full rand—simple, but protective. e midsole maintains the Waveplate and U4ic foam from the original, thanks to its e ective ride and stability on both road and trail. e outersole continues, too; its luggy traction works equally well on hard-pack, loose, and muddy trails. e compound is quite durable, so pavement isn’t a problem. e Hayate remains a quality choice for the trails, especially if Mizuno is on your favored brands list.

“The upper is totally different from before, with a stretchier feel, though the support strapping holds the foot nice and secure. The ride feels about the same as before, and the traction makes it a real trail shoe.”

Performance Trail Updates the Hayate 2 Sizes Men 7–13; Women 5–12 Weight 9.7 oz. (men’s 11); 7.9 oz. (women’s 8) Shape semi-curved Construction Strobel slip-lasted Recommended for medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

Cal-

New Balance 910 v2 $110Th e eff ectiveness of the New Balance trail running line has satisfi ed runners in every strata of the running world. Th e 910 is one of several New Balance everyday trail runners that handle terrain, mileage, and the ele-ments eff ectively. Th e upper is an engineered mesh that vents well, and keeps it light with no-sew overlays but also protective at the toe, thanks to an additional overlay layer called Toe-Protect. Th e support of the upper is good, with the overlays forming a complete rand, connecting eff ectively to the heel counter. Th e eyestays and external ankle collar are reinforced with zig-zag stitching. Th e midsole is a healthy chunk of RevLite foam with its lively feel and good durability. Th e outersole is full-length rubber that features triangular lugs that have a nice bite on the trail without being overly tall on the road. Th e Rock Stop plate provides protection on uneven trails without making the forefoot overly stiff . Th e 910 v2 continues to off er the performance expected of the line, maintaining its traction, ride, and value.

“Fit snug in the heel, roomy up front. Comfortably well-cushioned with grippy traction.”

Responsive Trail Updates the 910 v1 Sizes Men 7–13,14,15,16; Women 5–11 Weight 11.4 oz. (men’s 11); 9.1 oz. (women’s 8) Shape semi-curved Construction Strobel slip-lasted, EVA Strobel board Recommended for medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

Nike Zoom Terra Kiger 3 $125Th e Zoom Kiger and its sibling, the Zoom Wildhorse, represented a much needed trail running reset for Nike. Round 3 features some fi netuning to a solid performer. Th e upper has been lightened a bit, and uses engineered mesh. Th e most signifi cant changes up top are overlays which are thin and printed on the surface, and the mesh is closed at the base of the upper, essentially forming a rand without using additional material. Th e midsole maintains the low-profi le, 4-millimeter geometry that has been so successful for the Kiger, as it is substantial enough to cushion well on all surfaces. Th e outersole is little changed from Round 1: chisel-pointed tread in a sticky rubber compound that’s still tough enough for even bituminous surfaces, though best off -road. Th e combination of low-profi le geometry, light weight and good traction make the Terra Kiger great for faster trail running.

“Secure upper with good toe room. Flexible, light, and fast. It’s fi ne for dirt trails, but it’s no bushwhacker.”

Performance Trail Updates the Terra Kiger 2 Sizes Men 6–13,14,15; Women 5–12 Weight 9.0 oz. (men’s 11); 7.4 oz. (women’s 8) Shape semi-curved Construction Strobel slip-lasted, EVA Strobel board Recommended for medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

Saucony Nomad TR $110   Th e Nomad TR is the fi rst new trail running shoe from Saucony since the introduction of the Peregrine four seasons ago. Th e Nomad off ers several features that diff erentiate it from its off -road siblings and add value to Saucony’s trail line. Th e upper is closed mesh with no-sew overlays, Pro-Lock secures the midfoot, and a D-ring at the bottom of the laces facilitates the use of gaiters. Th e midsole features 4-millimeter geometry and a low-profi le setup of Power Grid foam for responsive cushioning and good fl exibility. Th e outersole employs a newly designed tread of elongated diamond-shaped lugs that fl ex laterally to conform to the trail. Th e fl at bottom adds stability to the foot plant, and the tack of the rubber off ers additional grip. Th e Nomad TR suc-cessfully fi lls the gap in Saucony’s RAW collection, and its versatile traction, adaptable fi t, and good protection earned it our award for Best Trail Shoe for Winter 2015–16.

“Roomy fi t, but without feeling sloppy. Traction is subtle but effective, with a smooth feel on trail and road. I was im-pressed by both the fi t and the performance.”

Performance Trail NEW Sizes Men 7–13,14; Women 5–11,12 Weight 11.2 oz. (men’s 11); 8.9 oz. (women’s 8) Shape semi-curved Construction Strobel slip-lasted Recommended for medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics to mild overpronation

TrekSta Alter Ego Star $110 TrekSta has shown that a consistent, single focus on trail performance can bring dividends to a brand. Th e new Alter Ego Star debuts with an upper of tightly woven mesh with 3D-printed overlays providing much of the upper’s support, and traditionally stitched overlays at the toe, heel, and from the eyestay to bolster the fi t, especially in the forefoot. Th e forefoot has a pronounced asymmetrical shape that mimics the foot’s, along with similarly skewed lacing. Th ese features will improve the fi t for many feet. Th e midsole is a high quality, single-density EVA wih excellent fl exibility, without sacrifi cing protection. Th e outersole is a sticky rubber compound called Hypergrip, but the variety and shape of the lugs adds as much to the eff ectiveness of the sole’s grip. Th e Alter Ego Star provides fi t, traction, and protection for top-notch trail performance.

“They were shaped like my foot, so they fi t great. Really good traction, not too heavy, plenty of cushion. They covered all of the bases.”

Responsive Trail NEW Sizes Men 8–13; Women 6–10 Weight 11.4 oz. (men’s 11); 9.1 oz. (women’s 8) Shape semi-curved Construction Strobel slip-lasted Recommended for medium- to high-arched feet with neutral biomechanics

A  TIME  TO  DECIDE  By  Jeff  Horowitz

It  may  seem  hard  to  believe,  but  it’s  been  over  14  years  since   the   world   changed   forever   for   so   many   of   us.   In   a  single   fearful   day,   people   lost   loved   ones,   and   our   nation  lost  some  of  its  innocence.  A  number  became  shorthand  for  a  horror,  which   in   turn  gave   rise   to  war,  more  death,   and  the   modern   era   of   terrorism.   For   many   of   us,   time   is  divided   into   two   parts   -‐   that   era   before   the   falling   of   the  towers,  and  all  the  years  since.

We   live   in   a   world   now   that   seems   increasingly  unrecognizable  in  so  many  ways.  There  are  more  displaced  people   than   at   any   time   since   World   War   II,   but   nations  increasingly   live   in   fear   of   giving   them   shelter.   Well-‐meaning  people  cannot  abide  doing  nothing,  yet  are  afraid  to   do   anything.   Fear   may   be   the   catchword   of   the   New  World  Order.

What  does  any  of   this  have   to  do  with  us  as   runners?  Everything.   Runners   know   fear,   in   ways   large   and   small.  Heading  out  on  a  dark  road,  conquering  longer  and  longer  distances,   overcoming   injuries   and   doubt.   These   are   the  ordinary  fears  that  all  runners  struggle  with.  But  there  are  larger  ones.

In   2001,   the  Marine   Corps  Marathon  was   held.   Every  participant  had   to   seriously   consider  whether   they  would  still  race.  It  would  take  great  courage  to  simply  stand  at  the  start   line,   along  with   tens   of   thousands   of   other   runners.  Together,   these   runners   created   an   enormous   target   –  something   that   every   runner   was   aware   of   that   day.   But  still  they  came,  from  all  over  the  country,  and  from  all  over  the   world,   speaking   different   languages   and   believing   in  different  religions,  or  no  religion  at  all.  And  the  race  went  on.  It  was  a  day  that  no  one  who  was  there  will  ever  forget.

Now,  a  generation  later,  runners  must  again  face  their  fears.  The  word  “Paris”  has  replaced  9-‐11  as  shorthand  for  terrorism,   and   racers  must   once   again   overcome   not   just  their   personal   doubts   when   lining   up   for   a   race,   but   our  shared   anxiety   about   our   collective   safety.   We   must   all  make  the  decision  once  again  whether  we  dare   travel  and  race.  We  must  decide  together  whether  our  community  of  runners,   growing   year   by   year   to   number   in   the  millions,  can  endure.

So   far,   things   look   good.   No   races   have   yet   been  canceled  over  security  concerns,  and  there  doesn’t  seem  to  be  any  rush  to  end  even  the  mega  races.  But  what  will  these  races  look  like?

As   a   community,   we   have   embraced   all   race  participants,   from  wherever   they  may  come,  and  however  they   may   compete.   Will   runners   welcome   the   new  immigrants  in  our  community?  The  refugees  who  have  fled  lands  far  more  dangerous  form  our  own?  Will  we  reach  out  to  welcome   runners  who   look  different   from  us,   and  who  speak  another  language?

Yes,  there  is  a  risk  in  opening  ourselves  up  in  this  way.  And  yes,  there  is  risk  in  gathering  for  races,  in  running  long  distances,  in  heading  out  the  door  in  the  dark  to  run.  There

are   many   people   now   who   tell   us   that   we   can   no   longer  take  on  certain  kinds  of  risks.  But  there  is  a  far  greater  risk  in  not  doing  so.

I   tell   those   runners   who   I   coach   that   we   define  ourselves   as   the   tribe   who   does   not   stop,   even   when   it  would  be  easy  to  so,  when  we  would  have  every  reason  to  stop,   and  when   no   one  would   blame   us   for   stopping.  We  continue  on  because  we  know  we  can,  and  because  we  can,  we  should.  Not  just  in  running,  but  in  life.

I   admit   it:   I   have   a   bias   in   favor   of   runners.   I  unashamedly  believe  that  we  are  superior  people,  that  our  suffering   has   built   not   just   stronger   bodies,   but   better  character.  I  have  always  been  proud  to  be  a  member  of  the  running  community.  I  am  confident  that  this  will  continue,  even  in  these  difficult  times.

By Chris LeyenSam Chelanga edged out Tyler Pennel to

win the elite men’s heat while Molly Huddle put in a dominant performance to cruise to victory in the women’s heat at the US National 12K held in Alexandria, VA on Sunday, November 15.

The elite men’s race at the .US National 12K presented by Neustar came down to a matter of feet as Chelanga held off a surging Pennel to take first place in 34:35. At the race press conference held at the Crowne Plaza Downtown Alexandria on November 14, he predicted a close race between himself and Pennel, joking that “he’d do a staring contest with Tyler.” Come race day he got it, kicking it in with less than a quarter of a mile to go. Pennel steadily closed the gap, finishing just shy of Chelanga, also in 34:35. Our coverage of the press conference and race results can be found online at RacePacket.com.

After the race, Chelanga commented that he “love[s] running with Tyler, because it’s kind of like dueling.” Both racers expected the tight finish, and Pennel postured for it from the start, coming up just short. His plan was to “Come in as relaxed as I could at 10K” and he knew the real race was starting as Chelanga picked up the pace with 200 meters to go. The burst by Chelanga would prove to be enough, however. Tyler was “barely gaining on him” throughout the last 200 meters, just narrowly unable to overtake Chelanga.

Kipchirchi, Spisak, and Shrader would follow shortly after Chelanga and Pennel, the top five men finishing within four seconds of each other. Jared Ward (34:42) and Jason Witt (35:10) would trade the lead early on, but go on to finish 6th and 13th respectively. With this 6th place finish however, Ward would go on to win the USATF Running Circuit Series, followed by Chelanga and Pennel. The .US National 12K win gives Chelanga his second USATF

championship since becoming a US citizen earlier this year.

The women’s race was a different story. Molly Huddle (38:36) cruised her way to a 6th national title in 2015, collecting $20,000, plus circuit bonuses as she led the field by over 200 meters, boasting a 13 second lead at the two-mile and 18 second lead at the 5k. The three-time .US National 12k champion cruised confidently along the George Washington parkway, as the racing continued behind her in the chase pack. This win, along with four additional USATF Running Circuit race wins would give Huddle her third consecutive USATF Running Circuit overall title. Remarking on her performance, Huddle recalled getting a lead early and maintaining it. Therein lay the challenge in her race. “It was hard to grind out there alone” she remarked.

Sara Hall would lead the chase pack in, finishing in 39:02, followed by Alisha Williams (39:05) and Kim Conley (39:11) finishing strong despite still feeling the effects of coming off of an injury.

This year’s race was held in ideal conditions, clear and crisp, perfect for performing at the highest level, or as a casual runner. Today amateur and professional athletes lined up together at the starting line, as the elite men, masters, and open divisions took off at 7:55 a.m.

The .US National 12K, now in its third year, brings elite US athletes to the road to race along the Potomac River through Old Town Alexandria and along the George Washington Parkway. It is part of the USATF road series race featuring USATF championships from the one mile distance through the marathon, consistently attracting the best American distance runners, awarding over $500,000 in total prize money, $100,000 of which was presented at this year’s event.
