A Warm WKARWelcome toPeter WhorfLate this month, WKAR will welcome Peter Whorf as the new WKAR Radio station manager.
Peter has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music, and has been the program director for WNYC and KBIA, the managing pro-ducer for news and talk programming at Chicago’s WBEZ and most recently at WFMT/Chicago as program director and vice president for content.
Gary Reid, WKAR’s general manager, said, “His references from around the country were generous in their praise.” ”Peter is astonishingly creative and leads by example,” said one. “He is thoughtful and forward thinking...,” added another.
Peter and his family are moving to mid-Michigan this month and he will join us on August 27. We’ll offer you a more in-depth profile of Peter after he’s had a chance to settle for a bit!
Peter Whorf
Dear Mark,
I just had the urge to write somebody and thank them for streaming WKAR.
I listen to it here in New York City. I do that because my mom’s radio in her
nursing home in Okemos is tuned in every day to WKAR. She is 96 and it is a
deep form of comfort to me to know we are listening to the same music all day
together. It makes me feel close to her, even when I am miles away. This may
be a bit of a unique use of streaming, but I bet you collect lots of stories like
mine. Your efforts really matter to me.
My best to you,
Gina Bria
Thanks, Gina. Your words are touching and we are glad to be there for you both, and all those around the world who listen to WKAR.
Loving Our ListenersRecently 90.5 Classical host Mark Schwitzgoebel received a letter from a woman in New York City who listens to the WKAR Classical stream…

Share pictures of the magnets you
create by posting them on our WKAR Education Services Facebook Page. We’d love to see what you come up with!
…is for Magnets! And magnets are COOL! You and your kids can make your own refrigerator magnets together (see the craft project on this page) and then have fun learning about magnetism.
Let’s Go On A Magnet Hunt!Hide magnets on metal surfaces around the house, such as the refrigerator, a file cabinet, and the washing machine. Help your child think of things that are metal where a magnet might "stick." Then go on a hunt to find the magnets!
Magnetic? Or Not?Collect items that can be picked up with a magnet (metal screw, paper clip, can lid) and items that cannot (cotton ball, toy, paper.) Let your child use a magnet to sort the items into two piles—picked up by a magnet and not picked up by a magnet.
Q: What did the items the magnet picked up have in common? A: They were all metal.

The Radio Reader | Weekdays, 8:30 a.m., AM/870
Dick Estell is reading The Great Northern Express by Howard Frank Mosher, which he began on July 31.
Shortly before novelist Howard Frank Mosher turned 65, he learned that he had cancer. After 46 radiation treatments, he set out alone in his old car on a monumental road trip and book tour across America. The Great Northern Express chronicles the writer’s 20,000-mile journey as he discovers what he loved enough to live for.
On August 17, Anatomy of Injustice by Raymond Bonner begins. It is a page-turning account of the trials and death row appeals of Edward Lee Elmore, a quiet and mentally challenged African-American man accused of the murder of an elderly white woman in South Carolina in 1982.
It tells of the remarkably dedicated legal team that fought for him to have fair representation in court after three separate and grossly misman-aged jury trials. Kirkus Reviews said the book is a “powerfully intimate look at how the justice system works – or doesn’t work – in capital cases.
Dan Bayer Honored at Summer Solstice Jazz FestivalDan Bayer, host of The Dan Bayer Jazz Show (Saturdays, 8 p.m., 90.5 WKAR) was recently honored with the Summer Solstice Jazz Festival (SSJF) Director Chair Award for 2012.
The award was presented by Lois Mummaw at the event on behalf of the SSJF Advisory Board. The Director Chair award has been given since 2009 to recognize longevity, volunteerism and pas-sion for the annual event. John McDaniel was also honored with the award this year.
"You go through your life and career just trying to do the best you can without expectations of recognition. When something like this happens, you wonder whether you deserve it," Dan says. It makes me happy to know that my sincere interest in the music, the festival, the musicians, the people who attend, the people who run the festival and the com-munity in general, was recognized."
by Howard Frank Mosher, which he began on July 31.

Lois Mummaw
Previous recipients of the Summer Solstice Jazz Festival Director Chair Award were:
2009 – SSJF Founders Al and Beth Cafagna
2010 – Festival Coordinator Ami Van Antwerp and Major Sponsor Gregg Hill
2011 – Co-producers Rodney Whitaker and Mike Brand
Mummaw said, "Dan was chosen this year because of his many years as emcee of SSJF and his year-round dedication to jazz."
Three cheers to Dan!
