Upon reflection, I have additional thoughts I’d like to share, as you may have had similar concerns. Late last year, a viewer called to share their frustration with what seemed like the increased frequency of one and done series, such as Sanditon and Beecham House. These two MASTERPIECE dramas received a bit of hype, but in the end, both fell short of renewing for a second season. The viewer reasoned that MASTERPIECE should not be investing in programs that do not “end up going anywhere.” My initial response was to say that unfortunately, there are always going to be winners and losers; some programs just simply fall short of expectations. I talk with viewers frequently; usually we discuss the series you like, or especially dislike. A recent conversation stands out, however, as it instead

focused on the process of acquiring MASTERPIECE dramas.

The viewer reasoned that MASTERPIECE should not be investing in programs that do not “end up going anywhere.”

My initial response was to say that unfortunately, there are always going to be winners and losers; some programs just simply fall short of expectations.

However, there is more to this regarding Sanditon and Beecham House. The model for investing in series has changed. Due to higher competition to acquire a series, MASTERPIECE producers must make a commitment much earlier in the process than they used to. If they do not act early, before the true success of a show is known, then another network or streaming service may make a move to grab exclusive rights. Either they act quickly or lose the rights to bring fantastic programs to you.

Other circumstances also affect new seasons of established programs. For our beloved Victoria (which we hear there is interest in future seasons) the challenge has been scheduling. Actors have been

You will be able to stream all episodes of Downton Abbey through WITF Passport through 2023! Hopefully that is enough time for you to enjoy the company of the Crawley family once again. committed in other productions, and Victoria producers have been unable to gather everyone together to move forward.

The good news is that PBS and MASTERPIECE have built strong partnerships over the past five decades; you can expect to see high quality productions, despite a few not lasting many seasons. On the horizon, we can look forward to new seasons of our favorites All Creatures Great and Small (what a fun remake!), Miss Scarlet & The Duke, Grantchester, Endeavour and World on Fire.
