Well, what a difference 4 months makes! Last issue of Radio Waves was very light on for both articles and pictures, unlike this edition. Thanks to all the contributors. It does allow radio sailors from around the country and the word see what is going on. “A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do”, and with those words, ARYA President Lindsay Walker, and ARYA Secretary Mark Harris will be sailing off into the sunset (hand-in-hand?) and not nominating for any positions at the 2015 AGM. I just managed to teach Mark how to use a computer, now I will have to break someone else in!

Have you en-tered yet for the 2015 Nationals in Perth? If not, time to make a decision. Graham Bantock has confirmed will be travelling

to Perth to compete in all 3 classes. This is a great opportunity for Aus-tralian skippers to meet and com-pete with one of the worlds best. Don’t miss this opportunity. It is a lot cheaper to get to Perth than it is to England (and slightly cheaper to live in the West too!!)

DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE IS FEBRUARY 15, 2015

From The President

H ello Skippers

This will be my last report as Presi-dent as I think it is time to move on and let others have a turn. I am

indebted to all of your Committee for the great and dedicated work they have done over the past year. Of particular note is the support given by Bill Clancy, my confidant and friend and Mark Harris who continues to keep us all on the straight and narrow. THANKS.

As we approach the next AGM I would again ask all States to fully brief their representatives with good background knowledge about motions so they can bring forward Amendments and or vote on Amendments that are brought up by others. We should try to lift our standard of governance and avoid being able to sum up the Minutes as 'all candidates were elected and all motions were lost". It does not reflect well on the organisation or show much trust in our State Dele-gates.

I am pleased to be able to report that we received some valuable comment in regard to the draft Constitution that was sent out. This material has been incorporated into a revised version which has again been sent to those members who made the most valuable and considered comment. The document now makes provision for the support of new classes and provides a pathway for classes to become Nationally Recognised Classes. As the document progresses it will be reviewed by your Committee again before going to a constitutional lawyer for final review before being brought before the ARYA formal-ly.

I would also like to encourage skippers to come to the Nationals this year in Western Australia. I know that if is a long way for all the skip-pets in the east, but the event management team are doing a great job and they deserve our support. I hope to see you there.

From The Secretary

G ’day fellow sailors,

At last the warmer weather is with us. (Well it is here in Queensland anyhow). Funny how the sun and warmth seem to make sailing a much nicer affair. So good sailing to

all members for the forthcoming summer season. (Don’t forget to “Slip, Slop, Slap”).

This will be a fairly short report this time around. Very busy getting the 2015 IOM Worlds documentation in order, and preparing for the ARYA Annual General Meeting due in January 2015.

And on the subject of the AGM, I regret to inform the members that I will not be seeking, nor accepting any nomination for the Executive Committee for next year. I need to spend more time on “household duties”, which after a week of hard work is difficult to do when there is the ARYA work to attend to, plus find time to sail myself.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the current executive for their support and assistance.

I feel we have made real progress this last year, with a number of issues. Not least of which is the Constitution. I really believe the amendments being discussed will enhance the governance of our sport for many years to come, and the current Executive will be trying hard to deliver a document prior to January.

Also the Treasurer and Registrar have put in enormous hours trying to correlate an up to date data base of members, (registered boat owners). The direct payment system seems to have some issues, with those attempting to pay for any action not understanding the payment method. Scott was a bit grey before he introduced this sys-tem, however, now is very grey, and with some bits missing, if you get my drift.

I also thank all the State Secretaries for their varied levels of support. I believe Radio Control Yachting in Australia now has a much more vocal communication system with the sport’s Governing Bodies. And

Page 8 Nov-Feb 2015

again, I would like to thank Selwyn Holland for taking on the Secretarial role within IRSA, and Ross Bennett who has really taken on the NCA role within IOM ICA with gusto. These two gentlemen have been an invaluable source of information and news during the past year.

The Marblehead World Championships was won by expat Brad Gibson, and the Australian contingent represented our Country with pride and te-nacity. Please see elsewhere in this issue to see what I mean. (Thanks to Mrs Thomas!) Very well done guys, an absolutely awesome effort.

The European IOM Title was also taken out by Brad Gibson, but not with-out a lot of drama. Clearly a very difficult Regatta condition wise, and even some very respected skippers had trouble getting out of “C” and “B” fleets, our own Lindsay Walker amongst them. Reports I have from OS are that the intrepid scorer Anne Walker sorted out more than one glitch with the computers and scoring systems, and those from Europe, and the Ameri-can PRO are eternally grateful for her input and expertise. Great work Anne.

New from Hales Micro: Surface Mount Block SMB-1

Blocks are supplied with two 2mm stainless steel washers, two plastic 2mm flange washers, a plastic 3mm washer and a M2 x 12mm stainless steel bolt and nut. These accessories provide for various fixed or swivelling applications. A typical mainsheet bulkhead application is shown above. The mounting accessories can be replaced by a M3 mounting screw if desired. Spread the arms of the bracket slightly to fit the M3 screw. The surface around this block may need reinforcement if it is used in the right angle configuration.

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 9

As you are aware the 2015 Marblehead National Championship was hand-ed back to ARYA by Western Australia due to a lack of entry for the Regatta, by the entry closing date. South Australia volunteered to host the event, and their offer was accepted. A NOR for this event will be in general publi-cation shortly.

And on the subject of the Nationals, I really have to commend the Team in WA. Really great promotion, and constant news. Nobody should be left wondering what, where or how. It has been a pleasure to deal with the guys in the West.

It goes without saying, that I shall continue to fulfil my Secretarial role until the AGM, so keep a look out on the website for news, and thanks to Eddie Cowell for continuing his support of our sport.

Good sailing to everybody. And most important, Enjoy.

“We are not here for a long time, so make your stay a good time”.

T he PRYC 10 Rater fleet at Emerald Lakes, SE Queensland, is alive and well. Our numbers have increased in the last six months with two new members and a third, Paul Dash, to join us in the next month or two with a boat from Mel-

bourne. It’s reputed to be a fast boat so we look forward to keeping it behind us! It continues to be a struggle to keep the fleet up around the 8 mark so is encouraging to see new talent joining us.

Ross Capper has sold one of his boats to Peter Cox who is improving rapidly with new rigs on the boat. Mark Perkins has a new boat un-der construction to his own design and is presently sailing one of Ross’s old boats and is going well with Mark’s rigs on it. His new boat sounds interesting so we are all looking forward to champagne day. Ross continues to try new ideas and with a new “boat building shed” under construction we expect to see more off the production

line shortly.

Roger Margot’s boats continue near the top of the fleet with guests sailing some of them with the hope of attracting new members. Jeff Watt’s Patterson designed Wandoo now has Muzzie rigs on it and is showing great boat speed particularly in good breezes.

drian Banwell has joined the IOM fleet and his JAB is gathering dust lately but hope to see him back now and again on his return from France. Two Muzzie’s have recently sold to Lismore and a new boat to the Black Magic design is currently under construction by John Musgrave. This will be lighter and more rigid in the centre and lighter in the ends with slightly longer overhangs. It will sport a Walicki rig with adjustable backstay and sail controls.

Black Cadillac, the Muzzie 2, which is currently the quickest boat in the club is now up for sale.

Sailing conditions on Emerald Lakes have been excellent over the summer with a choice of 3 sailing positions leaving us spoilt for choice. The stronger SE winds of the summer are about to be re-placed with lighter more variable breezes and should suit the shorter boats.

We have tried to attract Marbleheads to join us but this has not been successful, unfortunately. There are many gathering dust around the area so would encourage them to come on down to the lake some day and try to match it with the 10 Raters. In a breeze they’re more than a match for us and would give them great practice for upcoming events. The Sth Queensland 10 Rater Champs that were to be held at Eagleby earlier this year were cancelled through a number of boats having to withdraw and it is hoped that this event may be held later this year.

Cheers,

John Musgrave

2014 Australian RC Laser National Championship

T he 2014 Australian RC Laser Championship was sailed on Emerald Lakes on Queensland’s Gold Coast hosted by the Paradise Radio Yacht Club (PRYC) on 25/27 July. Two boats entered from Western Australia in the 24 boats fleet with a

good representation from all Australian States. The control area was on a headland jutting into the lake so that good true courses could be set no matter the wind direction. On the Satur-day morning the water was glassy with not a breath of air but soon a light NW breeze started to fill in and we had excellent sailing under ‘A’ and then ‘B’ rigs for the whole day.

The fleet had been split into two fleets and the HMS 2013 was imple-mented. At lunch time Dave Pruden [WA] was leading - but by the end of the day Grant Gillespie [Vic] had taken the lead. At this stage

Page 14 Nov-Feb 2015

the five leading boats each represented a different State and the competition was very close.

The second day started out the same as the first - absolutely no wind and then the breeze started to fill in from the SW. During the day it gradually went around to the SE and both sails were used again. At the lunch break, Jurgen Luther [SA] had hit the front by 2 points from Graham Brown [NSW] with another 2 points back to Dave Pruden [WA]. The leading seven boats were within 12 points and there were still five races to go !

Graham Brown took the championship firmly in his hands in the last heats with a 2nd followed by 4 first places. Jurgen Luther and Paul Derwent [NSW] were equal on points after the last heat but second place went to Jurgen on a count back. There were 8 different winners in the ‘A’ fleet. The new State Teams Shield used a special handicap system where those participants travelling furthest to participate earned the bigger reward. This resulted in the Shield going to WA because their two representatives, Dave Pruden and Rod Popham finished 4th and 5th. The Sportsman’s Award was decided by a secret vote of all competi-tors and was won by Peter Burford [Qld]. PRYC organised plenty of food and drink for competitors over the two days and the Saturday evening dinner was a happy and well attended function. The PRO Bill Clancy, scorers David Black and Ann Walker, and their experi-enced race com-mittee are worth a special mention and thanks as the whole regatta proceeded without any prob-lems and these things do not hap-pen by chance. Congratulations to all the trophy winners - but really we were all win-ners.

2014 Marblehead Worlds

I would just like to inform all the Marbleheaders, just how proud it was to represent Australia in Holland at the beautiful Reeuwijk Lakes ...how lucky is this club to have such top facilities, club-house, pontoons, sheds etc to belong to and hold the Worlds

there. I was lots of fun meeting the " real" people we speak to on email, and everyone got on so well. Socialising was extra good after the races, milling around the bar, chatting etc. The raising of the country flags was most exciting seeing ours up there… yeh… Personally I was so proud of "my "boys for their tenacity in a strange place, resourcing needs to repair the damages boats… weird shop-ping areas, driving wrong side of road, strange language. I will never forget David's face seeing the damaged cartons at Paris airport then his very white face in the hotel when pulling out the boats from their carbon fibre packaging… OMG...i t was my awful po-sition to email Lincoln ( still in Oz) as to the tragedy… he had the sails and ready to come over.. my thoughts were ,would he ? After seeing

photos from my iPad. Well, ..tenacity, resourceful-ness ,.pig headed,. tough guts, the master designer and master engineer had bums up and heads down in our hotel room, ...boats, bits, tools, carbon fibre, scissors, saws, tape, , ..you name it ,

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 17

on the bed, with one boat with its nose broken, other without a bum end....and holes and cracks everywhere ..I then christened Lincoln,s " Patches" and David’s boat " Bandaid"..... then seeing the boats floating in our ensure bath, (in my relaxing bubble bath) ...to find more holes and cracks to fix.... hilarious.... 3 days and late nights, then practise races....they were a bit toey about this.. would they be chasing a sinking boat. The support from Chris and the club was amazing, and the cheers when neither boat did a "Titanic".... they gave it their best every day… some days were good, wind,... others fierce, super wind and then the flat deck days,( yuk) our boats like the tough stuff.. There were 79 boats and very good EU sailors with plenty of tough practice, and our local home soil pondages competing against each other… Lincoln came in 22nd and David came in 45th and lots behind them… wow… for smashed boats, that was very good. Many would have given up seeing the smashed boats, and gone home… but the Aussies don't do that, it's in our DNA.... although Lin-coln did sell his boat, to an admirer, ours will puddle along in Victo-ria… maybe the boys need to open a "boat hospital " for facelifts and transplants in the shed… I just hope this adventure is an insight to people who want to do the big events, to keep trying and succeed ,whatever the problem, whether you win or not.. it shows winning isn't everything but partici-pation is.

European IOM Championships (A personal experience)

I recently had the good fortune to be able to represent Australia

at the recent European Championship in Lake Garda. Many

Countries had up to 10 representatives. As normal all their sail-

ors tended to keep together in and around the marquee. I was

fortunate in that provided I swore allegiance to the Crown each

morning I was able to put my boat and rig box with the British. They

figured that a 'colonial' would not represent much of a threat.

The venue was sensational with the wind blowing southerly in the

morning, dying out at about 11am and then blowing northerly after

about 1pm. It was frequently No2 rig strength, but the only time it

got to No3 rig the marks failed. This was very frustrating for both the

competitors and the PRO, who was a guest from America. This prob-

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 19

lem was uniquely Italian. The waves got so big that the marks of the

course frequently disappeared below the surface. A 'Country Repre-

sentatives' meeting was called to try and find a solution, but all sug-

gestions were deemed to be unacceptable. It was a loss of an oppor-

tunity. There were other organisational issues, but the staff tried

very hard to overcome them. The PRO was a guest, who is going to

hold the same position at the next IOM Worlds at America. The scor-

er and computer operator was a guest from Australia and without

these two people the event would not have run as well as it did.

Sailing got underway each day at 9am and except for the period of no

wind each lunch time ran through to about 6pm. With so many boats

this meant that only 15 full races were run over 6 days. The regatta

used larger fleets and a 6 up 6 down format. This was very good and

Page 20 Nov-Feb 2015

ensured more access to A fleet than the normal 4 up 4 down for-

mat. It has a l8t to recommend it.

Weed was an issue some days and the worst example was that of the

Spaniard who eventually came second. In one A fleet race he was

leading comfortably when he collected weed. In spite of 'backing up'

three times he was unable to get rid of it and he finished last. He

went down to B fleet.

It was noted that with such a high standard of skippers present there

was a very fine line between success and failure. The sailing standard

was very high. At one time there were three past world champions in

C fleet.

In summary it can be said that the standard of competition in the

IOM class is very high in many European countries. The world cham-

pionships, next year are in America and although we were not repre-

sented in Israel there will be opportunities for Australia, as many Eu-

ropeans will not be able to compete. They will find it expensive to fly

as they told me they are used to being able to drive to events.

Cheers

Lindsay Walker

Tasmanian A Class State Championships

T he patrons of Risdon Brook Park, who were game enough

to brave the weather, were given a real treat this weekend,

having the opportunity to observe the largest fleet of Inter-

national A Class yachts assembled in Southern Tasmania for

a considerable time.

Saturday was Day 1 of the Tasmanian Championship, which incorpo-

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 21

rated the Herb Tyson Memorial Trophy, and Sunday was Day 2 of the

Championship.

Saturday was by far the more pleasant of the two days, with a good

breeze mainly from a northerly direction, which faded during the

latter part of the day, causing the last few races to be sailed over a

shorter course.

John Cole-Cook dominated the morning winning seven of the first

eight races, and finishing no worse than fifth in the remainder of the

days races. John won the day and the Herb Tyson Memorial on 17

points. Michael Hickman was always there abouts and finished sec-

ond on 29 point just ten ahead of Chris Thomas, first of the visitors,

who was third.

Sunday was day 2 of the Championship, and by far the worst of the

weather, the north west guys broke out the "Long Johns" and were

still complaining about the cold. The breeze, at times a gusty wind,

was once again mainly from the north, and of a good strength,

around lunch time it lightened, and tried to come in from the south

west, bringing rain and sleet. This only lasted long enough for the

PRO to march every one up the dam for a change of course, the

count down was about half way through when a good gust came

down the dam, from the north, causing the race to be aborted, and

all return to the original course. Once again the wind eased, mid

afternoon, causing the course to be reduced in length.

Day 2 saw only eleven races being completed, Michael Hickman

sailed consistently to overtake John Cole-Cook and win the Champi-

onship by two points on 43, John hung on to get second on 45 points,

just six clear of George Fish who was third on 51 points. Chris Thom-

as was fourth on 89 points.

Tasmanian Marblehead State Championship

T he weather Gods really provided some typical pre Show

spring weather that cajoled, confused, and frustrated all

skippers at some time during the event. Day 1 saw the

wind coming from that roughly northern direction with

Page 24 Nov-Feb 2015

enough strength for most skippers to opt for the “B” rig. After about

three races all skippers had changed up to the “A”, which remained

the rig of choice for the rest of the day.

At the completion of sailing after day one, Lisa Blackwood was a clear

leader on, twenty-one points, from Jeff Byerley, John Cole-Cook, and

Stuart Dawes all on Forty-two points, with Greg Torpy a further five

points back.

Day two provided another aspect of the Tasmanian Spring weather

pattern, the breeze was light and very variable, coming from some-

where around the north to the south west at variable strengths and

consistency.

Lisa managed to hang on to win the Championship on fifty-six points,

from John Cole-Cook on sixty-four, and Greg Torpy was third on sev-

enty- two. Stuart Dawes was fourth, and Mike Hickman fifth.

A special thank you to Ray Joyce for acting as PRO for the event, and

the photo below. Also to those members who gave up time to assist

Ray.

2014 Marblehead World Titles

I have been asked to report on the Australian experience at the

worlds, there is already a very comprehensive report on the

MYS site covering the event http://

marbleheadsailing.wordpress.com/ and the convincing win to

Brad Gibson. So I won’t go over the main results again.

David Thomas, John Cole Cook and I took the big trip to compete at

in this competition and we all had a mix of results and experiences.

The Venue was very scenic and the weather was warm with only two

days with rain.

David and myself got there a few days early to prepare and we need-

ed this time as our boats were damaged on the plane David’s was

very bad and despite working all day repairing over nine cracks aft of

the fin box there was still five forward of fin box and we had to resort

to Mylar tape to make watertight. Thanks go to Chris Vaes, Brad and

Victoria Gibson in their assistance in getting our repairs done. John

had arrived well in advance with a new Waliki Skapel design and had

been doing some practice sailing, which seemed to me a much pre-

ferred preparation to an event like this.

The two days of measuring was mostly taking up with meeting and

catching up with our fellow M Class sailors from all over the world,

this to me is one of the reasons we do this. During the afternoon of

the second measuring day there was some practice races which also

gave the race committee and International jury some testing of the

venue and duties, including role of Observers.

I was happy at this stage as our boats were only leaking a little and in

the B and C rig conditions the F3 design was going well. The First day

Page 26 Nov-Feb 2015

was a reality check with both F3’s were struggling in the light A rig

conditions, John was going well and staying in A fleet most of the

day.

One of the Dutch people had developed some software that dis-

played the Five Fleets on a Fleetboard electronically on TVs in three

locations around the venue. This turned out to be very successful and

was carefully monitored by all as you had to watch for you may have

been allocated as an Observer and the penalty in missing your obliga-

tions was a 720 degree turn in your next race. I believe this software

is available to purchase at a small fee, which I would highly recom-

mend as any fee would not cover the hours of programming and fine

tuning to get the system to work.

The control area is a 6m square platform which was at the end of a

long series of pontoons. It was difficult to get a good position to see

your boat and there was quite a bit of polite jostling to get the best

position for you to start. Most of the racing was working into the

shore which was short and caused a lot of incidents and wind shifting

near top mark didn’t help. At the end of each day the Race Com-

mittee and few sailing reps had an informal meeting to discuss the

days sailing and any improvements to be made, I believe this was

very useful for all involved and meant it kept the morning briefings

short as most of the issues had already been discussed and solutions

already formulated. International jury were very knowledgeable and

professional and were very happy to discuss rules and any incidents

and my times as an Observer I learned as much as the sailing while

working with them in attempting to keep everyone within the rules.

Overall I was happy to have made the effort to come and test our M’s

against the best, as a builder of the class I felt obligated to see how

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 27

we are going with our development. It was clear that the Swing rig

needed work with rake and settings, but we also need a stronger lo-

cal fleet to compete against. So that is my next goal to try to get

more people into the class in Australia and perhaps lure some past M

sailors back. The M Class should be the Class of radio boat everyone

would want to sail and race, given its high tech all carbon parts and

high aspect rigs, their speed and acceleration in gusts should be more

attractive to more people.

I was nominated to join a ‘working party’ of M class sailors from

around the world with the goal of eventually starting a Class Associa-

tion. I think that is great timing for us in Australia to open it up to all

to get involved and think of ideas on how we can promote the class

and get a greater participation. So I would like to start by collecting a

list of email addresses of M class sailors, please email me lin-

[email protected].

The M world’s was great experience and would highly recommend

people think about going next time it comes around. It is a very

Page 28 Nov-Feb 2015

friendly and fun event, not super serious like that other class. If you

are thinking of going to an International event don’t be intimidated

by the title and just have fun, you should however wrap your boats

up well and have a holiday while your over there.

I would like to make mention of Remi Bres sailing a 20 year old boat

and winning 2 heats! So that might make you think that it is not just

about spending money on the latest and greatest. Grahame Bantock

has been working hard with his many faithful followers to get faster

and catch up to Brad who has been dominating for last two years. He

has definitely closed to gap and if Brad had a few bad races like most

us do, GB would have won. Brad’s attention to detail and ability to

constantly start and sail well is a standard we would all aspire to, he

always competes with good attitude by never pushing rules or his sta-

tus to get over another competitor.

The 2014 NSW “Movember” IOM State Championship

Hosted by Kogarah Bay Radio Yacht Club on 22nd and 23rd of Movember 2014

U nfortunately since the formation of the Kogarah Bay Ra-dio Yacht Club in 2001, three of the members have suc-cumbed to prostate cancer. The KBRYC members have decided to fight back and contribute to the battle against this disease and other illnesses that affect men.

The members of KBRYC decided to raise money for the men’s charity “Movember” by donating all the proceeds from the running of the NSW IOM state titles. The NSWRYA committee has approved re-naming the event the 2014 NSW “Movember” IOM State Champion-ship.

Movember’s aim is to change the face of men's health through the power of the moustache. All of us involved in RC yachting are either men or know a man so we should all be giving generously to this charity. The club President Scott Condie has registered the event with Movember as a money raising “team” and we hope the “team” will be very well supported. Tax deductable donations to the team’s fundraising efforts can be made to Scott before, during or after the event.

We challenge the UK IOM sailors to a Battle for the Tashes to see if they can raise more money for Movember than we can. Let’s not let the Poms win.

Therefore the 2014 NSW “Movember” IOM State Championship is going to have some extra rules.

The entry fee will be $25, but if you have not started growing a moe on Movember 1st for display at the regatta then there will be a fine of $5, making the entry fee $30. If a skipper only wishes to sail one day then the entry fee will be $15 with moe and $20 without

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 31

If you already have a moe, then it must be shaved off on the last day of October and started again on Movember 1st

Stick on moes will be considered cheating. If anyone tries to cheat with a stick on they will be fined $5

A $1 fee will be charged to the winner of every race and will be collected at the presentation

A prize will be awarded to the skipper or helper with the best and most outrageous moe

The competition is expected to be even hotter than usual. Skippers will want to win races just so they can have the privilege of donating an extra dollar. Online entry to the regatta is available on the NSWRYA website.

NSW A Class State Championship Hosted by: Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club, Lake Illawarra

There were a total of 12 entrants listed for the weekend. All well oiled and practiced ready to go to battle. In perfect sunshine racing started with the wind coming from the NE at 3 knots and building up to 10 knots by late afternoon.

Unfortunately, early in the day Andrew Sands retired with winch trouble while Pat O'Donnell had transmitter problems.

The fleet was made up of a number of Bantock designs .... Sword , Privateer, Gunboat and also a Sweet 9, Venom and a Dragon Fly ( designed and built by Yeoman Sands).

Early on the Saturday as the wind strength grew the two Sword boats of Brian Dill (reigning NSW Champion) and Warren Nor-rie and the Sweet 9 skippered by Garry Declauzel scored most of the victories. Selwyn Holland in his Privateer scored a few wins also ....... showing off his sail

making skills with One Piece Luff Pocket Sails ( rarely seen on A Class yachts ). Most of the Gunboats also performed surprisingly well giv-en 4 of the boats had only been completed 6 weeks before.

Sunday was almost identical to Saturday with the wind again from the NE from 4 to 13 knots.

As the wind picked up there were a few collisions but no major dam-age to the yachts. During the 2 days there was only one protest dis-pute so most of the racing was carried out at a brisk pace and han-dled well by the PRO Garry Bromley. During the afternoon the waves and wind took their toll as 2 yachts had rudder breakage and damage and had to withdraw. During this time Jon Pinkerton and Laurie

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 33

Hinchcliffe had some good races and kept the leaders on their toes.

That left 8 boats to battle out the last races on B rig in very trying conditions. The last race of the day may have decided the title as Bri-an Dill had weed on his rudder and came in a very disappointing last.

When all the scores were tallied Warren Norrie came First 6 points ahead of Brian Dill with Garry Declauzel third and Jon Pinkerton fourth. Warren has only been involved in the A Class for a short time but has always come in the top 3 of many events and now has added the NSW Title to his medal tally ..... Well done Warren !!!!

Wollongong Model Yacht Club must be very proud to have Brian Dill 2nd nationals 2014, Selwyn Holland 2nd nationals 2013 and now Warren NSW State Champ 2014.

Very impressive for a club with a small membership.

1st Warren Norrie (l)

2nd Brian Dill (c)

3rd Gary Declauzel (r)

John Heard was given the Sportsman Award and in his first regatta came in a very well deserved 5th.

Many thanks must go to all the members of Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club who got their hands dirty and kept the Regatta running smooth-ly.

N.B. I'm sure we all wish Selwyn Holland ( WMYC ) and Garry Brom-ley ( KoBSC ) good luck when they travel to Perth in January to con-test the A Class Nationals.

A t time of writing it is now just 3 months before the start

of the Nationals. That time will fly passed, especially with

Christmas thrown in there.

Planning is at the stage where we really need to know

numbers before we can progress much further. Entries at this stage

are somewhat low, but we are assured that this is pretty normal.

We encourage anyone thinking of coming over to make your arrange-

ments, especially for your accommodation. Should you wish to stay at

the Lakeside Holiday Apartments or River Resort, the rooms are

booking out fast. The operators had kindly held a number of rooms

for us, but they cannot hold them any longer. There were a number

of rooms remaining when we attended the IOM States in early Octo-

ber, but they are likely to be rather scarce by the time you read this.

From a social perspective, we are fortunate that the River Resort Tav-

ern has re-opened for our Presentation nights. The Tavern is only a

hundred meters from the River Resort, so we will be able to walk

home after the evenings! They have a function room which we have

been offered for our Presentations. The local Sportsman’s club are

also pretty keen to have us come along for a quiet drink after sailing.

The AGM will be held there as well. They have offered us the oppor-

tunity to have a BBQ and some “barefoot bowling” afterwards. So the

after sailing activities could be a lot of fun.

Some great news for our regatta, is that Graeme Bantock is making

the trip to Perth to sail in all 3 classes. Graeme has the use of a

Sword, thanks to Brian Dill, a Diamond, thanks to Bink Frayne and a

NSW EC12 State Championship

The Newbie Report, Sailing Perspective With a Difference.

N ine boats were at the registration point and all passed their registrations easily… Just wanting to enter and own-ing a EC 12 was enough whispered one unknown EC 12 owner!

All submitted their paperwork then the assembly began in earnest. As soon as a glint of sunlight and wind appeared...Hulls were angled in their cradles toward the wind and the fine tuning began.

As a newbie I was just happy to get my shrouds into the proper posi-tion whilst squinting over towards Allen Roberts preening his new hull 181.

Such is spirit of competitiveness several people came over to help me. Allen even restored the inner drum winch function after the line to sails exploded internally… then set about to tune old 140 a boat he once owned and had sold to me.

It's a real pity there aren't more competing as there was plenty of foul weather to test the mettle of those that registered. One fellow came from Canberra, one from the Central Coast and another from Bowral who had only bought an EC12 on the Wednesday prior… that's how keen he was to compete.

Penalty turns were done without too much prompting from the eagle eyed officials Owen and Mal.

Mind you lens cleaner should become mandatory as some just

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 37

said..."I didn't see you " as they wrapped up into my rig-ging. Doh!

It was the first time I had par-ticipated in such a race, plus I hadn't actually sailed my EC 12 for 4 months due to ankle surgery.

This is how good sailing is guys n gals… Even my mates at the Kogarah Bay Sailing Club… mates like Allen, Leigh, Glynn and others offered to rig and lower my boat If I could get it there.

That’s the camaraderie of model sailing… one that's missed out on by those that have the great yachts like these hidden away in Garages all over the state and beyond.

If ya cant rig it yourself or lift it in the water… get it there.. I'm sure people will help you into the water.

There should be a "Men’s Shed" activity to get this class a following they deserve. My view entirely… Imagine a "Men’s Shed" on pon-toons… now that could be a racing class in itself.

See you at the next registration Day… bring exact monies... they nev-er have change.

RC Lasers

T he 2014 Australian RC Laser Championships were sailed on Emerald Lakes on Queensland’s Gold Coast hosted by the Paradise Radio Yacht Club (PRYC) on 25/27 July. The 24 boats fleet had a good representation from all Australian States.

See full report elsewhere in the magazine.

The 2014 NSW RC Laser State Championships were held on the weekend 30 / 31st August at the Dobroyd RC Laser Club - Congratu-lations to Graham Brown (1st), Jurgen Luther (2nd) and Peter New-man (3rd) for hanging in though two days of tough competition to pick up the major placing's. Thanks to Paul Martin (PRO) and Rhys Withers (Scorer) for the smooth organization that helped greatly to make it such an enjoyable two days. Very special thanks also to Jill, Janet and Silvia for catering and helping out with the scoring. Another outstanding RC Laser event – great sailing and happy banter throughout the two days. Well done to all the sailors for their com-petitive sailing and sportsmanship at all times. The 2014 WA State RC Laser Championships will be held at South Perth on 16 November, 2014

Marbleheads

T his is my first newsletter for Radio Waves, although I have been the Marblehead coordinator since 2013….. so better get on with it.

The most interesting event to take place this year was the Marble-head worlds, I would expect everyone would have been following this with interest….. how would our three Australian travels go, and our other Australian with an Great Britton sail number, Brad Gib-son ?.... so four Australians. Brad won the event to be World champion again, a fantastic effort and he didn’t need a new boat to do it The three Australians made the journey some with boats and John with the intention of picking up a new boat in Germany, a new Wal-iki, certainly avoided the trouble of carrying the boat and everything that goes with them. Lincoln and David would have liked to do the same, given the prob-lems they had with their boats being damaged ….. frantic repairs at the venue while the others tuned their boats, but in the spirit of our sport they had some help and they battled on…… not missing a race. I won’t write a lot more as I hope you have read Brad’s article on the web site and also Lincoln’s article in this issue of Radio Waves. I will say that for Lincoln and Dave to take their own design in both boat and fittings is a massive display of Australian design and initia-tive, it certainly got the attention of the other international sailors. A huge well done, to all three.

Class Corner

Page 40 Nov-Feb 2015

The South Australian State heats and the Bourneville Trophy race were run last weekend. We managed a solid fleet of 17 boats with 5 interstate sailors making the trip, it was great to catch up with Dave and Lincoln and to see Lisa arrive just before the racing start, she flew over from Tassie, arriving just in time….her new boat being transported to the line by the rescue boat ?? I must say the racing was great, lots of good humor and sailors do their penalty turns without being asked to, a great weekend of sail-ing…..a part from my having a horrible weekend, but it was still fun. Some of us went out for dinner on the Saturday night, this proved to be a good move as Dave and Lincoln where able to talk more about the move to have the Marblehead’s form their own Class Association much the same way that the IOMs did a few years ago. This did prove to be a good move for them and with the growing interest around the world, I think will prove to be a good move for us. So, keep an

eye on the ARYA site for news and information, it is very early days’ and will require a lot of input from everyone. It is not a done deal. As I hope you all know by now the Marblehead nationals will be held in Adelaide, March 11,12 and 13th. 2015 It will be a great event with an excellent new venue that I am sure will meet with everyone’s approval. I won’t say too much, but keep an eye out on the ARYA site for news and details. So there it is the first newsletter almost done. Just one more thing to pass on, I have put a blog site together. This will allow us to have some communication, I can write stuff and those that want can send me stuff to put up for everyone, it is also linked to the English blog, which I must say is very good. So try the following link. www.australianmarblehead.com . also, for those of you that have a good eye, I spelt Marblehead wrong ….ooops….. the link will take you to OZMARBELHEADS. I look forward to hearing from Marblehead sailors and others.

A Class

T here’s a lot of new activity in the class at the moment. Many new hulls are being started and completed at present. Even as far afield as Norfolk Island; where Graham Bull has two shells heading over from the mainland. A lot of new boats

being built in the Illawarra region and some strong fleet racing hap-pening in most states. Thank you to all who reported on A class events this year. Also would

Class Corner appreciate any photos of new and refurbished boats for publishing & discussion…. As always there’s an open invitation for correspondence on your state events and boat movements. NSW Just a few notes on A class happenings in NSW. Congratulations to all the new boats being launched in the Illawarra region recently. Barry Grant, Lauire Hinchcliff, Bruce Williamson, Ralf Steyer and John Heard have all completed new “Gunboats” and recently launched them into the fleet. Brian Dill has been extremely busy measuring all the boats, and it’s no mean feat measuring an A class

boat from scratch! We are all looking forward to the new boats entering the NSW GP events and showing us the potential of this design! John Hall at CPRYC (Carr’s Park Syd) has a complete A class for sale as well as several boats in various stages. Any-one interested can contact me for his details, or through the NSWRYA website.

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 43

Class Corner John Uden from Sydney has laid a keel and is well under-way to producing a new planked hull. Looking forward to seeing it on the water John! Garry Bromley has available a series of detailed construction photo’s for the Gunboat design. They reflect the current thinking in the construction of this lighter Graham Bantock design. Copies of the disk are free. We can also supply a basic sail plan template if re-quired. Just drop an email to the address above. With the with drawl of FTRYC located at Tuncurry from being a GP host, the NSW fleet are looking for alternative venues interested in holding an A class GP. After some discussion amongst the fleet, it has been agreed to make one of the GP events an Interclub event based on the same format adopted by the IOM class in Sydney. Host clubs invite teams sailing for individual clubs, with the best team scores being added up to produce a winning club. The winning club then goes on to host the following years event, with the home club advantage. A match racing day has also been proposed; with trial day to go ahead at Koonawarra Bay SC to test the format., before invitations go out to other A class fleets. More details to follow. Darren Jones from Sydney has a couple of nicely restored A class cur-rently on the ARYA website for sale; including one of the newer Gun-boat designs. Worth checking out.

Class Corner NSW GP4 This year’s GP4 event at Carr’s Park has been postponed due to se-vere weather in Sydney on the scheduled weekend. This leaves only to events for the remainder of 2014. The state title at Koonawarra Bay SC 11th & 12th Oct, and GP 5 also at Koonawarra Bay SC on Sun 7th December. These events will be good practice for all heading over to the Nationals in WA. NSW State Title This year was hosted by Koonawarra Bay SC on Lake Illawarra. Con-gratulations to Warren Norrie, Brian Dill and Gary Declauzil for their respec-tive placing's. Full report on the NSWRYA website. For the 2015 state title, the venue will shift to Kograh Bay Sailing Club in Sydney. All NSW titles have now been nominated as two day events as a minimum. First, I apologize if I haven’t mention a significant something that you feel should be in here. Second, I hate apologizing... so get your “goss” to me please so we can all admire it. Actually, it is good, I am starting to receive interesting bits and piec-es. So please keep passing it through. I love tit bits of gossip and what is happening in the building and development area. This is the “state of nation” as far as our beloved 10Rs go.

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 47

Class Corner The Rankings From current information on regional and state events here is the ranking as of mid October. This will possibly shift a bit as WA, NSW and possible another state conducts their States and a couple of tail end regionals. These are drawn from around 16 country wide events up to 6000km apart spread across dams and salt water inlets, from small to large fleets, and with a large variety of designs. Many of our members never compete against each other except those who make the trek to the nationals. Such is the nature of our wide open, sunburnt land. The Nationals (10R: WA, 9-11th January 2014) This will most likely be our last chance to promote the Nationals in WA to you. For information and a good browse around anyway go here: http://nats2015.rsawa.asn.au/ With a couple of months to go, it isn’t too late to pop over there and join in with a very relaxed but competitive fleet. Scott Condie (NSW) returns to defend his title for the third time with Phil Page (NSW) and Glenn Dawson (from WA) looking to crash tackle him for this most prestigious trophy. My wife and I have decided to make a holiday of it and take a leisurely 2 weeks to drive the beautiful southern coast of

Australia. I hear there is still accommodation and flights available, but don’t wait any longer it is a holiday period. However you can get there, see you on the water. Around the States Western Australia As expected, the WA crew have put together a fantastic event for us for January. They have been gradually building and promoting the classes in preparation for these annual titles. Last January they came to Victoria in force and Glenn Dawson nearly took the 10R trophy back across the Nullarbor. This year we can expect the same logisti-cally delivered and efficient approach to the series. On a state level, there have been two main ranking events so far this year. Austin Lakes saw Glenn Dawson 1st followed by John Goor and then Robert Mews. The second event in July was topped by a new entry (I think) into the class Rosco Bennett picking up the event then Jeff Green and Graeme Howie. So, as the State Title approach (and will have been run too late to publish), the “top dog” boasting spot in WA is all up in the air. Again, great rivalry leading up into the Nation-als. Boy, they will be hard to beat with local advantage and lots of talent. South Australia The sailors in SA appear to have had a long and endearing affair with the 10R class. Their history goes a long way back including hosting International events. Alan Gold has sent me some class gossip (and much appreciated) including details on their recent state title. It seems such a nice friendly atmosphere over there.

Class Corner

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 49

The title was won with consistent sailing by the “Old Salt” Brian Pur-vis, followed by Ben Morris then Ian Dowsett (just pipping out Alan Gold). Alan sent me details of the boat types in the series and the interesting part is the variety and also the presence of two competi-tive dual rated Marbleheads in the series. The locals have been evi-dently cooperating to build some dual rates based around a “floppy hull over a (Frank Russell) Gothic plug made by John Inverarity”. Al-so, good to see David Walters popping in from Victoria for the series. The hull types present included:

Brian Purvis Lincoln McDowell Blade Ben Morris Bantock Iona Ian Dowsett Frank Russell Gothic (Marblehead) Alan Gold Lincoln McDowell Shark David Walters Lincoln McDowell F3 (Marblehead) Ian Backler Frank Russell Phoenix 3 Arthur Thacker Frank Russell XL2

Victoria After the business of the National Titles back in January, Victoria seems to be having a long snooze. I am sure there are things happen-ing in our great southern state with the 10Rs but I haven’t received anything nor can find anything solid to boast about for you guys. I did hear a rumour of an invigorated restart of the state titles down there. I noticed that Andrew Reid is again heading north for the NSW State Titles in November to try and shake the NSW tree. A very talented sailor and ex-national champion. Watch out Scott. Tasmania Similarly, no news from our holiday island. If there is anything going on I am happy to publish it.

Class Corner

Page 50 Nov-Feb 2015

Queensland This year’s major title was the Queensland 10R Championships host-ed by the Paradise Radio Yacht Club in September. A solid fleet of 9 turned up for the two day event with Tim Brown in his Starkers 3 tak-ing the title from Mark Harris (Vibe) then John Musgrave (Walicki). No information on the background gossip but nice to see a solid group and excuse me for making this observation but of the competi-tors present only Jeff Watt and John Musgrave were there from last year?? So you have the potential to have VERY large fleets of 10rs up there. Lovely place to sail and I bet the weather was “great the first day and awesome the next”! New South Wales On fleet numbers and current National Title prestige I would have to say (unbiased) that NSW is till the jewel in the crown for 10R enthusi-asm and numbers of events. A very noticeable culture in NSW is the enthusiasm for the class members to travel distances to get together and thrash it out for a weekend and collapse through the week. It doesn’t get any better. Apart from many club championships held around the east coast, the travelling circuit contains 10 events including the state titles, with 8 being ranking events. I won’t go through all of them but this year the podium has been shared around a lot with Scott Condie, Phil Page, Owen Jarvis, Selwyn Holland, Alan Roberts, Phil Lawson, Ralph Hy-man, Steve Sedgeman, Frank Russell, Lynn Kreibig Maurie Fletcher, Craig Sargeant and rising star, Garry Bromley all sharing top 5 plac-ing's over the series.

Class Corner

Nov-Feb 2015 Page 51

These guys are serious but all good friends and the rising numbers and new boats is a reflection of the “feeling” within the class. A very healthy environment for the future. The nationals will be hard fought and interesting to be involved in. Watch out WA. And Some More Bits Just in finishing, can I promote to you a great read in Ian Holt’s: “10R s in Australia”. A summary of the 10r status, developments, designs, etc etc. It was again updated earlier this year and can be found online at the NSW RYA site here: http://www.rcyachts.net/nsw/ (see the Latest News on the home page). The home page above also contains a couple of very interesting arti-cles on how to promote your class and/or club. These are actual suc-cess stories in NSW and not just theoretical. Again a good read See you on the water somewhere or even better at the start gun in WA on Friday 9th of January. Cheers

T he Business end of the season is upon us, State Titles and the W.A. Nationals. Those seeking a spot for next year’s IOM World Championship will be looking for those elusive Rank-ing points. Interest has been keen to represent Australia at

these prestigious events. The first round of selection gives Aus 2 spots but rumor has it that some of the European NCA’s won’t take

up all their allocations so we are hoping for some more spots to be-come available in subsequent selections rounds. The W.A. Nationals will no doubt attract the cream of Australian IOM competitors as already shown in the outstanding fleet attracted to the N.S.W. State Titles. An extra attraction this year is the attend-ance of Graham Bantock from the UK. Graham will be competing in the A Class, 10R and IOM Classes sailing borrowed Australian yachts to his design. I would commend to you all to make Graham and Lorna most welcome and it will be of interest to many to watch a master of our Sport in action. The IOM Europeans held recently in Italy were sailed in testing condi-tions. Lots of adverse current, weed, extreme depth of water and a control area platform which at times made vision of the top mark difficult. It is a shame that sailing in weed can make or break a Re-gatta as many a possible good result can sometimes end in disaster. But the cream always rises to the top and once again Brad Gibson UK (but really an Aussie) took out the title once again in a hard fought series. Lindsay Walker was the sole Australian representative and finished mid fleet sailing his new Chase IOM. More importantly Anne Walker saved the event, following a computer hick-up. Her coolness under pressure resurrected the Results and as a result Anne has been asked to assist with the scoring at the World Titles in the USA. I sup-pose Lindsay will have to carry the bags. On the State scene, numbers are still down in Ranking Events but the Club scene appears to be strong. Many new boats are appearing on the Registrar, so all in all the IOM Class remains the Class of choice.
