Executive Director’s Message

TAPESTERY / 2014

My heartiest congratulations to graduating stu-dents of 2014! To graduate in your chosen field is a wonderful achievement of which you should be very proud. When you leave the confine of Raffles you will open another chapter of your life where you will face challenges of a very different kind to what you have so far faced while in college. I am confident that with the guidance and training that you have gained from our team of International faculty in Raffles you are well equipped to take on the world of design.

Confucius once said, “Success depends upon previous preparation, and without preparation there is sure to be failure”. For all of you, your journey with Raffles is the preparation therefore failure is not an option! It is my hope that you would one day achieve great success in your chosen field of design and see your name along side world famous designers!

College Director’s Message

TAPESTERY / 2014

It seems like with a blink of an eye and we are at the third edition of the Graduation Book. Yes, it is time for you to leave the corridor of RMI and embark on the next exciting journey in your life. Congratula-tions and thank you, class of 2014 for opening the door of opportunities to find your rare talent in RMI.

I have no doubt you must have faced with many challenges along your journey to get here. Putting in the hard work, overcoming bumps and road-blocks, stumbling and picking yourselves up and start again, these are trials and tribulations that I am sure you would have encountered. However, these experiences will make you stronger and well equipped to take on the world that awaits you be-yond the parameters of RMI. Life is like Tapestry that is interwoven with thread of fall and rise, failure and success. It has been said that, “Failure is not the opposite of success but it is part of success”. Let all the challenges that you have encountered during your time in RMI be part of your success in the future.

It is my hope that you take with you fond memories of your tenure here and be proud to be counted as esteemed alumni of RMI. Last but not least, I wish you all the success in your future endeavours.

8VISUAL COMMUNICATION AND MULTIMEDIA DESIGN

Programme Coordinator’s Message,Visual Communication

Design is a conscious effort. Design also requires designers to predict design problem instead of merely concentrating on creating aesthetic values. A good graphic designer is capable to communicate design to their audience through visuals. Having good skills in conceptualising de-sign is an asset for all designers, however it is essential for all graduates to have good learning attitude because your journey has just began. Ed-ucate is unending be it in your studies or in the professional field and preserving a good learning attitude will help you to be more than just a de-signer but a renowned designer who is not solely good at his and her job and also a trustworthy person whom clients can rely on your expertise.

Designers, Biker, Religious: these three terms sum me up. Designing is like painting a canvas digitally with your thoughts. My designs represent the passion I have for being creative. In my view, typography and colour are the most effective creative tools.

Programme Director’s Message,Product Design

Product Design is one of the most diverse design fields there is. Whether designing furniture and lighting, athletic gear, exhib-its and other interactive interiors, futuristic transportation concepts or the electronic devices which make our lives both conven-ient and fun, the scope of this discipline is vast and varied. Product Designers contin-uously blend science, art, invention and in-novation to create the wide range of useful and beautiful objects we use each day, for every purpose. To this year’s graduates of the Product De-sign program here at Raffles New Delhi, I wish you good luck and Godspeed. Go make your mark on the world.

This collection speaks about my journey through the streets, lanes, bylanes, offices and monuments of Chandni Chowk, Delhi: the discoloring, the fading, the rusting, the peeling and renovation of the new ‘Chandni Chowk’. I have focused on the history and urbanization of the oldest part of Delhi.

The inspiration for my collection is prints reproduced from the carvings on the doors, windows, walls – and so on – of Chandi Chowk, Delhi. As Chandi Chowk has a cultural and Indian identity, I decided to make an Indo-Western style collection where I have used the technique of dabu printing. I have kept the silhouettes simple and Indo-Western, and taken inspiration from Chandi Chowk for both the pleating and color schemes.

The old buildings of Chandni Chowk, Delhi, have inspired my collection. I have focused on texture, layering and the weathering of the walls of the old buildings, which I have juxtaposed with the shape and structure of the famous Jan-tar Mantar. The techniques I have used in my collection are laser cutwork to represent the structures and marble dyeing to reproduce the effect of weathering on walls.
