Symbolism of Night in Night

Abandonment of Hope, Justice and by God. • Most horrific events happen at night

• Gods presence represents light

• Absence of light means no God

The word Night symbolizes:

• “The first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed” p.32• Abandoned by any sense of justice• No hope• Helplessness

• ‘Behind me, I heard the same man asking: "For God's sake, where is God?“ And from within me, I heard a voice answer: "Where He is? This is where, hanging here from this gallows ...” That night, the soup tasted of corpses.’ (P. 62)• God is dead

Purpose

Wiesel’s main purpose was to write his memoirs of the Holocaust.

“Night offers an eyewitness account of the utmost importance, but it is essentially one young man’s story.”

• Used to show how the Jews were isolated and abandoned without hope.

• Gives reader an idea of how horrific the holocaust was.

• Describes the emotional terror of Jews.

Why was the word Night used?
