L-R in photo: Jazz musicians Kirk Brown, Ari Brown and Terry Ross (Board Member) performed for the 2016 Rald Institute fund raising event, “Stop the Killing”. The 2016 fund-raising event held for Rald Institute consisted of a daylong art exhibition hosted by young adult Interns, staff and board members, along with an evening of jazz, commemorating the late Rald volunteers, Barbara Cress Lawrence and Morris Jennings. Featured artists included our own Intern, Christian Black and well-known artists Sura Dupart, Yaounde Olu, and many others. [Photo of musicians by Joaquin Barry, M.Div.]

OUR MISSION Rald Institute's mission is to assist at-risk children and individuals with learning, behavioral,

and other special needs. We also provide leadership training and employment for young adults. We work to enhance self-worth, while strengthening cognitive and affective domains. Rald Institute believes in providing experiences in the arts within our rehabilitative services because such experiences help children expand critical thinking, increase imagination, overcome mediocrity, and appreciate cultural diversity. We believe in inclusive programming and include gifted and talented children in our art workshops.

Rald Institute provides design and implementation for the Response to Intervention/pre-

referral process, assessments, learning and behavioral interventions, consultation and referral

services, transition and vocational experiences, special art workshops and field trips. The

Institute also provides teacher training opportunities and workshops for educators, health care

workers, and parents. Services are dependent upon availability of volunteers and financial

resources.

OUR HISTORY Rald Institute formed in 1981 as a result of community interest in the needs of hyperactive

and learning disabled children. Parents met with educator, Beverly Normand, in an attempt to obtain assistance for their children. Initially, children and families were serviced in special summer programs. In 1988, services were formalized and incorporated as Rald Institute. In 1995, Rald became an Illinois non-profit agency, operating from several sites in the South Shore neighborhood in Chicago. Now, services are provided from the sites as well as in schools. Rald Institute has provided quality in-kind services for hundreds of children and families annually.

OUR CHILDREN - OUR COMMUNITY From Beverly Normand, PhD., CEO

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

2016 was an exciting year for Rald Institute in a number of ways. Through funding from St. Sabina’s Employment Program and the City of Chicago, we were able to employ eight young adults in our fine arts marketing program. Simultaneously, the young adults were provided a rigorous curricula including detailed study of nonviolent leaders Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Howard Thurman. The course was taught by Doctorial candidate, Professor Howard S. Wiley, who served a Rald Institute Residency through United State Department of Labor funding. Rald Institute Interns were the recipients of awards for Most Valuable Players, Attendance and Other awards. Additionally, 80% of the Interns entered colleges in the fall of 2016, such as The University of Illinois at Champaign, Hampton University, Northern Illinois University, and some of the City Colleges in Chicago. Rald Institute serviced approximately one hundred youths with special needs over the past two years by providing counseling, behavior therapy and direct service for various perceptual and academic needs at Edward Bouchet Academy and New Sullivan School. Additionally, Rald Board member, Larry Turner, PSYD/RN, provided classes in stress reduction for approximately 40 boys, and Beverly Normand provided individual and family consultations and technical assistance for 10 additional children and families during 2015/16. Art History lessons, art workshops, and art exhibitions were sponsored by Rald Institute at Bouchet School, New Sullivan, School, and at the Merrill Avenue Gallery. In 2016, Rald featured Works by Dr. Yaounde Olu, Jamaal Gayles, Gerald Sanders, Barry Bruner, and student artists, Gavin Jones, Jada Neeley, Elle Bertrand, Naeem Richmond, Christian Black, and others. Free art workshops were given by Gerald Sanders and Runako Jahi. Curators and lecturers for the 2016 Exhibits included Beverly Normand, Gerald Sanders, and Rosalind Henderson Mustafa. Approximately 600 students attended Rald Institute’s exhibitions and art lectures over the past two years. A highlight of these years was the informative and well attended Substance Abuse Treatment Workshop where the renowned Norman Littlejohn, CAADC/MISAII, was the keynote speaker. Professional Development Units were awarded for participants, and due to many requests, we are planning a second session featuring Mr. Littlejohn. We thank all of our volunteers, funders and donors who helped us accomplish our mission!

RALD INSTITUTE SUMMER PROGRAM INTERNS

BOARD NEWS Rosalind Henderson- Mustafa, a recently retired administrator of City Colleges of Chicago, joined the Board of Directors of Rald Institute in mid 2014. "She's been a supporter for several years, but I never imagined the amount and quality of work she would bring," Beverly Normand said. “She worked with me full-time for several months in order to install our 2014 art sale/auction on-line gallery in time for our fund raising auction” Normand continued, "additionally, she assisted with annual reports, writing financials, and is continuously working wherever needed, despite her responsibilities with two other non-profit organizations!”

Larry Turner, clinical psychologist/RN who provided six months of volunteer counseling for Rald Institute this year and in previous years. He became a board member mid-year. He answered the call of the Ebola crises in Africa in the fall of 2014, and we are honored by his charitable acts everywhere!

Other new members who we welcome include speech pathologist, Kehinde Hattisburg, who brings a wealth of knowledge on autism. Thanks to members Judith Stanton and Anthony Cole for months of work on the 2015-16 funding proposals! Special thanks to Beatrice Peter and Gerald Sanders for teaching, and to Bernie Richard for summer counseling for youth.
