Rally de Portugal May 18 - 21, 2017

There’s renewed confidence at Hyundai Motorsport as we head to Portugal for round six of this thrilling 2017 World Rally Championship. Our hopes are high after we became the first team to score back-to-back wins this season following Thierry and Nicolas’ incredible victory on Rally Argentina to add to their success in Corsica.

It was a sublime fightback for them, after they suffered suspension damage early in the rally but powered on to five stage wins, finally taking the overall victory by just 0.7 seconds over Elfyn Evans and Daniel Barritt for the third closest finish in WRC history. It’s a result that has allowed Thierry to close in on second place in the Drivers’ championship, while Hyundai Motorsport is now a clear second in the Manufacturers’ standings, thanks also to Hayden and John and Dani and Marc who had their problems in Argentina but nevertheless battled on to the finish.

Argentina was an exhilarating rally and an incredible win that we will remember here at Hyundai Motorsport for a long time – and we must also congratulate Elfyn, Daniel and M-Sport for putting up such a good fight. Argentina is a tough event and we knew it would provide a hard test for these new cars, but our team showed its fighting spirit throughout. We have plenty of lessons to learn from this rally, which we will use to improve our Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC for the coming gravel rounds.

So, it is also with an increased sense of purpose that we come to Portugal looking to further strengthen our championship position. We are very happy to become the first team to win two rallies this year and we look forward to adding to our successes as the season progresses.

Rally de Portugal May 18 - 21, 2017

You’ve finished third on Rally de Portugal on three occasions so how would you rate your chances of going two better in 2017?“We have the same chances as we do on every rally. We will have a really good starting position in Portugal, which gives us a cleaner road surface. Like always we will try to do our best to finish at the top and we know our Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC is a good car for this.”

How much of a factor do you expect road position to be?“Road position on Rally de Portugal is very important, not just because you have more grip, traction and a more stable car under braking but it also makes a difference in your mind as you automatically feel that you are in a stronger place. I hope it can be good for us and give us an advantage.”

What are the biggest challenges you face on Rally de Portugal?“It’s not just the driver who faces the challenge, some places in Portugal are really hard for the car so you have to consider this. It’s a nice rally in the north and you also get some different types of stages. Some are like the stages in Sardinia for example, very soft with not a lot of grip. Other stages we visit have good grip so it’s like two rallies in one.”

How have you prepared?“Apart from the usual training, I had one day of testing before the rally, like we always do, to work on the set-up of the car on similar conditions to those we will find on the rally.”

What’s the best thing about the event?“For sure it’s the fans, especially the ones who come from Spain, although the Portuguese spectators are also very fanatical. The rally goes close to the Spanish border in some places – so we see a lot of Spanish flags on the stages – and that gives me and Marc a lot of motivation.”

Rally de Portugal May 18 - 21, 2017

● Hayden Paddon will get a new co-driver for Rally de Portugal with Seb Marshall standing in for John Kennard, whose existing hip condition was aggravated on the rough Rally Argentina stages last month. Kennard has been advised to rest rather than risk further aggravation but will still be making the trip to Portugal to support the Hyundai Motorsport team.

● Hyundai Motorsport and the victorious crew of Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul became the first back-to-back winners of the 2017 World Rally Championship season with their success in Argentina last month. Neuville beat Elfyn Evans by just 0.7 seconds – the third closest finish in WRC history – on a thrilling rally-closing Power Stage to secure the win following his victory on Tour de Corse.

● Neuville’s latest victory means he has closed in on second-placed Jari-Matti Latvala in the Drivers’ championship, with just two points separating the pair. Hyundai Motorsport is now a clear second in the Manufacturers’ table.

● As well as taking five stage wins in Argentina during his impressive fight back from suspension damage on Friday, Neuville also continued his unbroken run of Power Stage points, which now totals 19.

● It’s been a busy few weeks for Hyundai Motorsport following its Rally Argentina triumph. As well preparing its fleet of Hyundai i20 Coupe WRCs for Rally de Portugal, the team tested for the event the week before Rally Argentina in the Amarante region of Portugal with Sordo and Neuville both taking to the wheel for a day’s running.

● Hyundai Motorsport’s first venture into circuit racing took a big step forward at the end of April with the New Generation i30 TCR taking to the track for the first time for testing. Gabriele Tarquini completed three days of running at the Motorland Aragon circuit in Spain, with company engineers focusing on developing a base set-up for the new racer. Testing will continue throughout this year with the first cars expected to be delivered to customers in early December.

● There has been success on the stages for Hyundai Motorsport’s Customer Racing department with Giandomenico Basso winning the Transilvania Rally in Romania and Iván Ares taking fourth overall on the combined European and Spanish championship-counting Rally Islas Canarias, 11.8s shy of a podium place. Elsewhere, Daniel Šaškin finished fourth on the Rally Opatija in Croatia, while there has been success in Belgium, France, Ireland and Lebanon as the Hyundai i20 R5 continues to impress in customer hands. Hyundai Motorsport Driver Development Program driver Chewon Lim has been competing in France and Romania of late as he continues to build his experience.

HYUNDAI HAPPENINGS

Rally de Portugal May 18 - 21, 2017

HYUNDAI IN NUMBERS1967: Company founded in Korea and has gone on to establish sales networks in 190 countries and employ almost 100,000 people.

10,000: Of those global employees some 10,000 people work at Hyundai’s R&D base in the Korean city of Namyang.

3: As its name suggests, the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC comes with three doors compared to the five in its predecessor. But while there are two doors less, the new-for-2017 challenger has a power output of 380hp thanks to the introduction of a larger turbo restrictor – up from 33mm on last year’s car to 36mm.

10: The Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC is wider but lighter – it has shed 10kg compared to the New Generation i20 WRC, which combined with the increase in power should lead to an exhilarating spectacle in 2017.

1: With the new regulations allowing manufacturers to nominate three point-scoring drivers rather than two, the three Hyundai i20 Coupe WRCs will be entered under one banner: Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team.

6,000: Prior to the launch of the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC, some 6,000 kilometres had been covered during extensive development testing.

47: Hyundai Motorsport drivers claimed a combined 47 stage wins in 2016, as well as two event wins, plus 10 further podiums and 24 Power Stage points. With Thierry Neuville finishing second in the Drivers’ standings and Hyundai doing likewise in the Manufacturers’ table, last season was the best so far for the manufacturer.

100: Hyundai Motorsport claimed its 100th stage win on Rally Mexico in March, where Thierry Neuville also achieved the team’s 21st podium finish. It marked a successful weekend for the outfit, which took six stage wins in total.

19.1: Thierry Neuville’s 0.7s winning margin over Elfyn Evans on Rally Argentina in April equated to a mere 19.1 metres.

50: Hyundai Motorsport’s Alzenau base is located within a 50-kilometre radius of Hyundai Motor Europe’s base in Offenbach and Hyundai Motor Europe’s Technical and Design Centre in Rüsselsheim.

129: The Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC’s maiden victory on Tour de Corse on April 9 came 129 days after the car’s launch at Monza on December 1. It took its predecessor, the Hyundai New Generation i20 WRC, 138 days to win from its public unveiling.

2,687,000: The team’s popularity continues to increase with Facebook likes reaching the 2.5 million mark by early April. Meanwhile, more than 54,000 people currently follow Hyundai on Twitter.

Marshall made his co-driving debut as a teenager in 2004 and has been a regular on national and international events ever since. He was selected for the British MSA Rally Academy development scheme under the watchful eye of former co-driving world champion Robert Reid, while his WRC adventure began in Sweden in 2010. He has enjoyed successful stints navigating Harry Hunt and Molly Taylor, and linked up with Kevin Abbring for 2014 as Hyundai Motorsport’s development crew. He will become Paddon’s permanent co-driver, replacing John Kennard, from Rallye Deutschland onwards.

Paddon completed a remarkable transformation in 2016. Having joined Hyundai Motorsport as a development driver for a partial programme in 2014, the New Zealander bagged his maiden WRC victory for the team in Argentina last year. And he rounded off a hugely impressive first full season in the WRC by claiming fourth in the final standings. A rally driver from the age of 15 following a successful karting career, Paddon won the Production Car world title in 2011 before claiming his maiden WRC stage win in Spain three years later. He took his first podium in Sardinia in 2015.

HYUNDAI HEROESThierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul

A co-driver since his late teens, Gilsoul joined forces with Thierry Neuville early in 2011 and the partnership quickly blossomed with victory on Tour de Corse, then a round of the IRC, in only their second event together. Although winning the prestigious Michael Park ‘Beef’ Trophy for his co-driving achievements in 2013 was a major highlight, Gilsoul’s maiden WRC victory alongside Neuville in Germany one year later surpassed that effort, while his participation on classic rallies such as the East African Safari and Rallye du Maroc Historique remain cherished moments. Following their second straight win of the year in Argentina, he and Neuville have so far claimed 25 stage wins this season.

Fluency in three languages is just one of Neuville’s many attributes. Having shown plenty of raw speed in his early career, the Belgian made it to the WRC’s big league in 2012 with an abundance of potential, which he underlined by finishing runner-up to Sébastien Ogier the following season. He was Hyundai Motorsport’s first big-name signing for 2014 and famously headed team-mate Dani Sordo in a historic Hyundai one-two on Rallye Deutschland that year for his and the team’s first victory at world level. Equally adept on asphalt and gravel, Neuville’s victory in Sardinia was one of eight podium visits in 2016. And so far in 2017 he has become the first driver to take back-to-back wins with victory on Tour de Corse and Rally Argentina.

With a co-driving career dating back more than 20 years, Martí is big on knowledge and talent. He has also enjoyed stints alongside some of Spain’s best including Carlos Sainz, Jesús Puras and now Dani Sordo. Martí guided Sordo to the Junior world title in 2005 but they called time on their partnership midway through a troubled 2010 season. Sordo’s switch to Hyundai in 2014 coincided with a rekindling of his partnership with Martí, which will continue in 2017.

Of the official factory drivers competing in the 2017 WRC, only Jari-Matti Latvala has made more starts at world level than Sordo. And not only is Sordo experienced, he’s fast too, particularly on asphalt: he scored his maiden WRC victory on the sealed surfaces of Rallye Deutschland. Sordo started out in motocross and has also tried hillclimbing for size before moving to rallying and winning the Junior world crown in 2005. He’s pretty capable at karting too and uses his family’s karting track to stay razor sharp ahead of his WRC outings with Hyundai.

HYUNDAI IS HERE...

● In the past two years of activity, Hyundai Portugal has enjoyed very strong growth, more than doubling its sales. In 2016, with a growth rate of 67,4 per cent in the light vehicle segment, Hyundai was the top 20 brand with the biggest growth, an achievement repeated in the first quarter of 2017.

● The main pillars in this process were the renewal of the dealer network and the launch of new models, with 90 per cent of the model range replaced in the past two years. During this period, the i20 and Tucson have achieved the highest sales.

● The highlights for 2017 are the New Hyundai i30 and the eagerly awaited Station Wagon version, distinguished by their appealing design and high level of equipment, safety and connectivity. The IONIQ family will be completed with the arrival of the Electric and Plug-in Hybrid versions that will join IONIQ Hybrid, recently named the Best Eco-Friendly Car of the Year for 2017.

● Before the end of the year, Portugal will launch the new Hyundai Kauai – a sleek, sharp and progressive compact SUV.

● Hyundai Portugal further extends its offer to commercial light vehicles such as i20 Van, H-1 and the recent H350.

● Hyundai presents itself today as a stronger brand with a renewed and extended range in which the design, quality of construction and democratisation of technology stands out on a very complete package that offers an exclusive five years unlimited mileage warranty, and great value for both business and private customers.

Rally de Portugal May 18 - 21, 2017

PORTUGAL MEANS● Full of drama and history, Rally de Portugal will once again run in the

north of the country in 2017 on challenging gravel roads. Many of the stages used in the 50th running of the event last year are repeated although there are some new additions.

● The action once again starts at Guimarães, Portugal’s oldest city, on Thursday with a superspecial stage at the Lousada rallycross circuit that evening.

● On Friday, the event takes in reconfigured stages around Viana do Castelo, near the Spanish border, including a new 1.90km street stage in Braga to round off the day’s competition. Most of Saturday’s action is held on testing gravel roads in the Cabreira Mountains, with a double run through new stage, Cabeceiras de Basto. On Sunday, the rally is once more based around the famous Fafe test – renowned for its huge jumps and even bigger crowds – with new stages at Luilhas and Montim.

● Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP) ran the first TAP Rally in 1967, which then became round three of the first World Rally Championship in 1973. The TAP Rally and later Rally de Portugal have been named ‘Best Rally in the World’ five times. Originally run as a mixed surface event, it is now based primarily on gravel. Finn Markku Alén has won the rally five times.

● While crowd control issues challenged the Rally de Portugal organisers in the past, it was heavy rain in 2001 that resulted in the event being dropped from the WRC calendar in favour of Rallye Deutschland for 2002. Rally de Portugal made a welcome return as a WRC fixture in 2007 with the action based south in the warmer (and drier) Algarve region. It then returned to the north of the country for the first time in 14 years in 2015.

● The first TAP Rally was won by Portuguese crew Carpinteiro Albino/Silva Pereira in a Renault 8 Gordini, while the first event to count as a round of the WRC was won by Jean-Luc Thérier/Jacques Jaubert in an Alpine Renault.
