Rallye Monte-Carlo January 23-26, 2020

Welcome to Rallye Monte-Carlo for round one of what is sure to be a thrilling 2020 FIA World Rally Championship.

Everyone here at the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team is very proud to start this season with a world championship title to our name after securing the Manufacturers’ crown last year. Obviously, we would have preferred to have celebrated the title at the end of Rally Australia, but the decision to cancel that event was absolutely the right one and our concern remains for the welfare of all in the country.

But while we had an extremely successful 2019, the slate is wiped clean again as we prepare for 2020. Our aims for the coming season are clear: to fight for victory in each of the events on the calendar and to mount a challenge for the drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles.

And we do so with a change to our driver line-up as we welcome the 2019 championship-winning crew of Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja to our team on a two-year deal. Along with Thierry and Nicolas, they will contest all rallies in their Hyundai i20 Coupe WRCs, with Dani and Sébastien sharing a third car.

We know the ferocity of the competition will remain intense, so we have to make sure our technical package is as strong as possible. We have arguably one of the strongest crew line-ups in WRC; it is a reflection of Hyundai’s reputation in international motorsport that we are able to attract such a calibre of talent. I, for one, am tremendously focused on what the coming season will bring.

Therefore, we begin 2020 hoping for a winning start and we can certainly count on a formidable driver trio. Seb jointly holds the record of Rallye Monte-Carlo wins, while Thierry and Ott were both on the podium last year. Our Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC should perform well on this event, although of course we must remain mindful of the ever-changing weather and road conditions, particularly through the evening stages.

The scene is set for an exciting 2020 season – we hope you enjoy the ride with us.

Andrea Adamo Team Director, Hyundai Motorsport

How has your life changed since becoming world champion?“Life is still the same, I’m still living in the same place and still the family is good. I just have new overalls now but I’m definitely the same person.”Does starting the season as the defending champion bring more or less pressure?“It’s different. To win the first title was extreme pressure and more or less the only dream I had. It’s been a big job but now the job is to defend the title, which is something new because I’ve never done it before. But I’m motivated to get this done.”You had the option to carry number one on your Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC but chose to stick with number eight. Why?“I’ve had my number eight for a couple of years and I see it as mine, it’s special. It’s nice to have some consistent things in life and having number one on my car doesn’t make us any more of a world champion.”

How was your first test in the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC? “I felt good in the car. Each car has its own personality but, so far, I can say that the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC is a strong all-round package.”What have been your first impressions of Hyundai Motorsport since joining the team?“They’re extremely passionate and focused, and everyone has given us their full support. We definitely share the same hunger and aspirations.”How difficult is it to switch to a new team?“It’s never easy to change team as there’s a lot of work to do. Firstly, to get to know the people and then, of course, to make yourself comfortable in the car. But we’ve been working closely with the team to be in the best possible shape for Monte-Carlo.”

What are your immediate and longer-term objectives?“We have just won our first WRC title, but a new year means we start again from a blank sheet of paper. I will give all my experience to the team, and together we will work hard to defend our title and the team’s. For Monte-Carlo, I am always looking for a consistent start, to begin the season with a good feeling. For the season, everything is possible. I have a strong team behind me, so we will fight hard.”

Rallye Monte-Carlo January 23-26, 2020

● Hyundai Motorsport completed its preparations for the 2020 WRC season-opening Rallye Monte-Carlo with Sébastien Loeb, Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak conducting one-day tests in France earlier this month.

● New Hyundai Motorsport drivers Tänak and Martin Järveoja had been given their first taste of Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC power when they tested in Sisteron, France, on December 5. Loeb and Neuville also got a day of running each.

● The Sisteron outing followed Tänak and Järveoja’s switch to Hyundai Motorsport as the winners of the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship, which came courtesy of six event victories.

● While Tänak and Järveoja celebrated winning the WRC Drivers’ crown, Hyundai Motorsport was able to savour considerable success of its own after it clinched the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers. Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul finished runners-up.

● Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing also ended 2019 on a high when Norbert Michelisz won the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup in Malaysia on December 15. Driving a Hyundai i30 N TCR, the Hungarian took the title won by Gabriele Tarquini, his BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse team-mate, the previous season.

● Hyundai i30 N TCR drivers were successful in six other TCR series during 2019. They included TCR Europe title winner Josh Files from Great Britain and Germany’s Luca Engstler, who claimed top honours in TCR Asia and TCR Malaysia.

● Will Brown of the HMO Customer Racing team took the inaugural TCR Australia championship, while Dmitry Bragin came out on top in TCR Russia. In total, the Hyundai i30 N TCR registered 70 wins in TCR-sanctioned events. Elsewhere, Michael Lewis and Mark Wilkins won the US-based IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge in a Veloster N TCR run by Bryan Herta Autosport.

● In rallying, the national titles in Netherlands, Romania and Slovenia were claimed by Hyundai i20 R5 customers. At the Monza Rally Show in Italy (December 6-8), Sicilian Andrea Nucita scooped the €10,000 top prize for winning the i20 R5 Trophy in third overall for the Bernini Rally team. Nucita was one of 10 i20 R5 drivers competing at the Italian Grand Prix venue with three Hyundai WRC drivers from 2019, Craig Breen, Andreas Mikkelsen and Dani Sordo – who finished second overall – also in action.

● Meanwhile, Hyundai Motorsport is increasing its commitment to the World Rally Championship in 2020 with the addition of a two-car team in WRC2. Norwegian Ole Christian Veiby, 23, and 22-year-old Russian Nikolay Gryazin will drive the Hyundai i20 R5 ’20 run by the RedGrey Team.

N BRAND● Hyundai Motor’s high-performance N brand enforces the company’s

goal to create vehicles that match up to the high standards of excellence expected, but are as fun to drive as they are practical.

● N represents two important elements. Firstly, the Namyang district in South Korea where Hyundai Motor Group’s global R&D base is located and the N brand was born. Secondly, the Nürburgring race track in Germany, which is home to Hyundai’s Technical Center and used to hone the N vehicles. Meanwhile, the N logo itself is also a graphical representation of a classic race track chicane; a tight serpentine turn in the road.

● The N name and reputation have become established in global motorsport. Since its launch in 2015, N has performed at the highest level with success in the FIA World Rally Championship, the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup, the Pirelli World Challenge series and the gruelling Nürburgring 24 Hours.

● Hyundai’s competition-honed N vision and philosophy come to life in a systematically structured product portfolio.

● N models including the i30 N and Veloster N offer exclusive engine performance and dynamic technology innovations to satisfy performance-oriented enthusiasts. The introduction of the latest N car, the i30 Fastback N, completes the first phase of the N performance vehicle rollout.

● The new N Line, characterised by N-specific design and performance-enhancing elements, further widens the range of choices available to customers. These vehicles will be instantly distinguishable by their differentiated design elements.

● Finally, N Options will offer N-produced customisation parts for drivers who desire improved performance and uniqueness.

HYUNDAI HEROESThierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul

While Neuville was making his early rallying forays in 2007, Gilsoul had already notched up his first WRC start. They joined forces two years later and the partnership quickly blossomed with victory on the Tour de Corse, then a round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, in what was only their second event together. Their move to Hyundai Motorsport for 2014 has so far produced 12 wins, while Gilsoul was awarded the prestigious WRC Co-driver of the Year accolade in 2016 after finishing second in the championship. As well as myriad stage rallies in Europe and beyond, Gilsoul has tackled the East African Safari Classic Rally on three occasions, finishing a best of third in 2015 alongside Grégoire de Mevius.

An ever-present for Hyundai Motorsport in the world championship since the team’s formation in 2014, Neuville scored the first of his 12 (and counting) WRC wins in Germany that year. The breakthrough victory came after he headed team-mate Dani Sordo in a one-two finish, after he claimed Hyundai’s maiden WRC podium in Mexico earlier in the season, where he’d landed his first world championship top three 12 months previously. Having enjoyed huge success at junior level before stepping up to the WRC in 2009, the Belgian has had to settle for second place in the final world championship standings on five occasions, including the last four years consecutively, although he actually scored more wins than eventual champion Sébastien Ogier in 2017. As well as being a highly-accomplished rally driver, Neuville took a debut victory in a TCR Germany race at the Nürburgring in August 2019 driving Hyundai i30 N TCR.

Cousin of fellow co-driving Estonian Ken Järveoja, judo provided Järveoja’s early sporting fix – he won his country’s national title five times. But rallying soon became his focus after early forays on events in Estonia. He formed a successful partnership with Karl Kruuda with the pair making their world championship debuts together in Jordan in 2010, winning their class. With Kruuda at the wheel, Järveoja racked up significant international event experience – and success – over the next five seasons before the opportunity arose for Järveoja to rekindle his alliance with Ott Tänak, which consisted of five national events in 2013.

Tänak joins the Hyundai Motorsport family for 2020 as the reigning world champion following his standout 2019 season. A protégé of compatriot Markko Märtin, Tänak began competing on rallysprints in his homeland before he made his WRC debut in Portugal in 2009. Inclusion in the Pirelli Star Driver scheme for 2010 gave him his first major opportunity at world level and he completed the following season in a factory-supported World Rally Car, the catalyst to what would eventually become a full-time career in rallying’s top flight. Although there were dips along the way – he was restricted to events in his native Baltic region only in 2013 – he never gave up, securing his first WRC victory in Sardinia in 2017 and finishing third in the final table. He was third again in 2018 on the back of four wins and landed his first world crown last year courtesy of six victories. RALLYE MONTE-CARLO RECORD Starts: 6, 2019 result: 3, Best result: 2

Arguably rallying’s most successful driver, Loeb returned to the World Rally Championship for a six-event campaign with Hyundai Motorsport in 2019. Fourth on his Hyundai-powered debut on Rallye Monte-Carlo, he finished on the podium in Chile before triumphing on four national-level events armed with a Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. As well as claiming nine WRC titles in succession, Loeb has demonstrated impressive versatility over the years too, winning in the World Touring Car and World Rallycross championships. He was competitive on two starts in the Le Mans 24 Hours – finishing second in 2006 – and in Formula One tests with Renault and Red Bull. He’s also competed on the Dakar Rally and tackled the Pikes Peak Hillclimb, where he broke the course record in 2013 by 1m30s. He received France’s highest recognition, a Légion d'honneur, in 2009. As well as competing behind the wheel, Loeb’s eponymous team – which he co-owns – has been successful in several categories. RALLYE MONTE-CARLO RECORD: Starts: 12, 2019 result: 4, Best result: 1

Loeb’s wingman since 1997, four years after he first began competing, Elena has also tried his hand at driving. Indeed, he began 1997 behind the wheel on Rallye Monte-Carlo but crashed out. He had another go 12 months later and finished second in class, but his partnership with Loeb was already in full swing by then and driving was put firmly on the backburner. The Loeb/Elena alliance soon flourished and would be the stuff of legend by the time Loeb stopped rallying full-time at the end of 2012. While Loeb then raced in the WTCC and WRX, Elena has remained ‘rally fit’ by competing sporadically both driving and navigating.

Rallye Monte-Carlo January 23-26, 2020

INTRODUCING WRC2Hyundai Motorsport’s commitment to the FIA World Rally Championship has increased for 2020 with a two-car entry in the WRC2 support category, starting from Rallye Monte-Carlo.

Nikolay Gryazin, 22 from Russia, and 23-year-old Norwegian Ole Christian Veiby will compete in the latest specification Hyundai i20 R5 ’20 using Pirelli tyres.

Estonian-based RedGrey Team will run the operation, with both drivers entered under the Hyundai Motorsport N banner.

Jonas Andersson, from Sweden, and Russian Yaroslav Fedorov, will co-drive Veiby and Gryazin respectively.

In Gryazin and Veiby, Hyundai Motorsport can count on two talented young drivers with huge potential for the future. They are both champions at regional level and proven winners in WRC2 having taken a class win in Finland (Gryazin) and Sweden (Veiby).

Conforming to the FIA’s Rally2 regulations, the i20 R5 ’20 comes with new dampers in both tarmac and gravel configuration, as well as a more powerful 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, now putting out a reported 290bhp. Existing customers will be able to update their cars, while the new parts will be fitted as standard on all newly-built i20 R5s. The changes mark the largest single upgrade to the car since it was revealed at the end of 2016.

Hyundai Motorsport Team Principal Andrea Adamo said: “Entering WRC2 reaffirms and strengthens our commitment to the WRC as a whole. It will also allow us to prove the competitiveness and performance of our recently upgraded i20 R5 ’20 – the product of tremendous hard work by our Customer Racing department.

Fedorov, who began co-driving in 2005 in his native Russia, has been credited with helping to oversee younger countryman Nikolay Gryazin’s progression from circuit racer to international rally champion. They competed together for the first time in 2015 and, prior to the 2020 season, had notched up almost 100 starts alongside one another. While Fedorov is ever the professional, he has made it his mission to turn his lucky mascot, Porky the Pig, into a social media star and famously saved him from a fiery end on the Acropolis Rally in 2017 when the car he and Gryazin were competing in became engulfed in flames.

He made the ERC his home for the next three seasons, initially in R2 machinery, before taking the ERC1 Junior title in 2018 after landing his maiden outright European victory on the final event of 2017. As well as claiming the ERC1 Junior prize of €100,000 for two events in 2019, the Russian bagged two overall wins in 2018. He made his world championship debut in Sweden last season, finishing fifth in WRC2, before going on to win the category in Finland while also finishing 10th overall. Vastly experienced, Andersson established a strong reputation co-driving namesake compatriot Per-Gunnar, which included myriad wins and titles in the JWRC. With PG Andersson’s opportunities on the wane in 2009, the Swede joined forces with Mads Østberg, the new pairing winning their first event together. They formed a successful partnership until 2016 when Andersson linked up with Pontus Tidemand, having co-driven Ole Christian Veiby on two early-season events. But the Veiby/Andersson alliance was rekindled for 2019 and netted four Norwegian championship event wins.

Rallye Monte-Carlo January 23-26, 2020

Hyundai Motorsport began the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship season as they finished it: on top of the Manufacturers’ standings.

Second place for Thierry Neuville/Nicolas Gilsoul and fourth for Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena on Rallye Monte-Carlo gave Hyundai a five-point advantage in the race to be the sport’s top make.

But second could so easily have been victory for Neuville, who fought Sébastien Ogier for the top spot until the end of the very final stage, finishing just 2.2s behind the then defending world champion.

It was the closest finish in Rallye Monte-Carlo history and was also Neuville and Gilsoul’s – and Hyundai Motorsport’s – best performance on the traditional season opener, which included three stage wins for the Belgian pair.

“When you are in with a chance of fighting for Monte-Carlo victory you want to push for it but it wasn’t to be on this occasion,” Neuville said afterwards. “We gave it everything but a small mistake on Friday cost us the lead and we weren’t quite able to catch it back.”

Despite his participation on the Dakar Rally restricting opportunities to test the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC before the start, which caused a few set-up issues during the event, Loeb netted two stage wins on his Hyundai debut, making the most of his decision to select dry-weather tyres on day two, despite the mixed conditions he faced.

Norwegians Andreas Mikkelsen and Anders Jæger-Amland, in a third Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC, had been in podium contention starting Saturday’s leg but their hopes ended when they suffered an untimely retirement through accident damage.

● Rallye Monte-Carlo marks the only competitive outing by Hyundai Motorsport on French soil in 2020.

● During 2019, Hyundai set a new record in France with the registration of more than 39,000 cars (source CCFA).

● A total of 16 Hyundai models are currently on sale in France, ranging from the i10 to the Santa Fe. Hyundai’s best-seller in France, the KONA, offers four engine technologies (petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric). It is the widest choice in the B-SUV segment on the French market.

● In 2019, balloonist Bertrand Piccard drove 778km across France in a Hyundai NEXO, breaking the world record for the longest distance driven in a hydrogen-powered vehicle on a single tank. Never before has a production car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell covered so many kilometres on a single charge. As the first car manufacturer to mass-produce hydrogen-powered vehicles, Hyundai is actively preparing for tomorrow's zero-emissions mobility. The brand is already responding to current changes in the car market by offering the widest choice of electrified powertrains available.

● All Hyundai cars sold in France come with an unlimited mileage five-year warranty.

● The majority of Hyundais sold in France are designed and built in Europe.

● Hyundai currently has more than 180 dealers throughout France – and the network is constantly growing.

● Mountainous stages, changeable weather and road conditions combine to make Rallye Monte-Carlo one of the toughest events on the WRC roster.

● A founding round of the world championship in 1973, Rallye Monte-Carlo first took place in 1911 when 15 of the 20 starters made the finish led home by Frenchman Henri Rougier.

● And it was a Frenchman who took victory on the 2019 running of the event, when Sébastien Ogier drew level with Hyundai Motorsport’s Sébastien Loeb in terms of Rallye Monte-Carlo wins.

● For the 88th edition, the organising committee at the Automobile Club de Monaco has tweaked 25 per cent of the previous year’s route.

● Following two and a half days of reconnaissance, the Route de la Garde in Gap is the setting for shakedown from 16h00 local time on Wednesday January 22.

● Crews then make their way south to Monaco’s famous Casino Square for the traditional start ceremony from 17h00 on Thursday 23 January, which is followed by two stages in the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes.

● The action continues on Friday southeast and east of Gap for two loops of three stages, including the new Saint-Clément-sur-Durance - Freissinières test.

● Saturday’s penultimate leg features two loops of two stages before crews journey back to Monaco to prepare for Sunday’s deciding leg.

● With no opportunity for service, Sunday’s quick-fire route features four stages with the Power Stage due to begin at 12h18 local time over the 13.36-kilometre La Cabanette/Col de Braus. The finish is scheduled in Monaco at 15h00.
