Psalm 146:9

“The Lord watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and thefatherless.”

Our psalm of the week, Psalm 146, is again a psalm of praise. We praise the Godwho created and maintains all of creation. Our God is a big, all-powerful God. He isthe God who “made heaven and earth” (v. 6). While God is the God ofeverything and everyone, He is also the God of the hurting, the lonelyand the lost. “The Lord watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow andthe fatherless.”

In Old Testament times it was easy to forget the widows and orphans. They didn’thave family members to take care of them or speak up for them. The psalmmentions “sojourners.” They were people who we might picture as homeless. Thepsalm writer emphasizes that God forgets no one.

The words of the psalm were fulfilled in Jesus. When Jesus was on earth, He wentto tax collectors and sinners who were ignored and ridiculed by others. Jesus wentto fathers and mothers whose children had died. Jesus went to the lepers who noone else (not even their family) could touch or care for. Jesus told the parable ofthe lost sheep. Jesus went to find and care for every lost sinner. In His love Jesusreaches out to everyone and brings them into His family. When we feelforgotten, lost or lonely we can remember that Jesus never leaves us. Heis always with us.
