Garment industry of Bangladesh

• Apx 5,000 RMG industries

• Export oriented US $19 billion dollar a year industry

• 78% of country’s total export

• Second only to China

• Employs 4 million workers, mostly young women from poor families

• Complaints of unsafe and difficult working conditions

• Low pay – cheap products

Why buyers are interested in Bangladesh’s RMG industry?

Answer = Cheap Labour = Low Cost = More Customers =

More Profit!

Rana Plaza

• Rana Plaza – 8 Story building

• Permission up-to 6 floors, 2 additional floors built

• Built on filled-up pond – weak foundation

• Low quality materials used in construction

• Top 6 floors Garments, remaining 2 floors were shops

• Generator & heavy equipment fitted at the top floors

• 4,000 people working inside the building

• Ignored factory & fire safety rules

• Building owner very powerful and influential

Events of 23rd April at Rana Plaza

• Cracks seen – Workers evacuated by local administration and seals building for further assessment

• Workers scared and does not want to return to work

• Owner tries to justify that building is safe• In the evening owner assures staff that building is

safe and also warns that people not coming to work on 24th April might lose job

• Most workers are poor, are afraid of losing job and returns to work early hours of 24th April

24th April – Blood @ Rana Plaza

• 8:00 AM – 4,000 workers enter Rana Plaza for work.

• 8:15 AM – Workers though afraid start working with their heavy machine

• 8:40 AM – Electricity gone – Big Generators started, building starts shaking

• 8:41 AM – Building shakes strongly – Cracks are bigger –plaster falling off – workers panic & run – building starts to collapse – beams & pillars falls on workers – whole building collapse in a few minutes.

• 8:50 AM – Local people starts rescue, Civil defense and Armed forces join – Nation is shocked – anger sparks nation wide protests

1,129 workers died!

2,515 injured!Many dead bodies not identified! DNA tested!

Many still reported missing!

A number of injured have developed disability!
