RATHFERN
NEWS
We hope you had a restful and enjoyable half term.
I am confident that this half term’s learning will excite and motivate your children.
Mrs Maharasingam Headteacher
SERENA - OUR CHAIR OF GOVERNING BODY
“Dear Mums, Dads and Carers, I am delighted to have recently been appointed Chair of the Governing Body, following five years as a Governor. We have a strong team of ten Governors including Mrs Maharasingam and Ms Lannary, three parent governors and five additional governors appointed for their skills, experience and passion for education. The Governing Body is the school’s accountable body responsible for the conduct of the school and for promoting high standards. I am really looking forward to supporting the wonderful leadership and staff at Rathfern to ensure the school continues to provide children with a great education and environment in which they flourish.
As a personal introduction.. I live locally with my Guyanese husband and three year old son. I am a chartered accountant with a first degree in economics and a masters degree in International Development. I work for KPMG getting people to use their professional skills to lift people in Africa, Asia and Latin America out of extreme poverty. It is a privilege to have this opportunity to volunteer in my local community and I hope to meet many of you soon. Warm wishes, Serena”

BIG SLEEPOVER - FRIDAY
13TH FEBRUARY 15
We would just like to say a
big thank you to all the
children that attended the
Big Sleepover. Also a
massive thank you to all the
staff that gave up their time
to help organise & run it!
‘WICKED’ THE MUSCIAL
“On Wednesday 25th February, children from Years 3 - 6 attended a performance of
‘Wicked’ at the Victoria Palace in London. It was especially special for me because it was
my 11th birthday. It definitely proved to be a birthday to remember!
We travelled by bus and when we arrived at the theatre everything was green. We sat
very close to the stage so it felt like we were in the show. It was amazing and the singing
and dancing was outstanding!
On the way home I sat next to Miss Pendleton and we had a very long conversation
about everything. It was definitely a night to remember!” - Farai Gova (Solar Class)
NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM - YEAR 2 TRIP
“On Thursday 26th February, Year 2 went to the Natural History Museum. We travelled
by two trains and finally arrived in the pouring rain at 10.30am.
There was an enormous queue of tourists which seemed to go on for miles. When we
finally got inside we put our coats and bags away and then went to see the dinosaurs
display. We saw all sorts of dinosaurs including a snarling T. Rex!
Did you know the museum owns over 17 million specimens of insects? One of them
came from the museum’s own garden where new species were discovered in 2007.
Although it was a wet day we had lots of fun!” - Matilda Broughton (Electricity class)
SAINSBURY’S SCHOOL GAMES YR 5/6 HOCKEY BOROUGH FINAL
FEBRUARY 2015
“On Thursday 12th February, pupils from Year 6 attended Sainsbury’s school games. We
had junior managers and players. Team players were separated into three teams with 3
junior managers attached to each team. Each team played very well but unfortunately we
were placed in 2nd position in our divisions which meant that we couldn't play in the
semi-finals, but it was very close as all the teams were separated by goal difference.
Overall, we enjoyed the competition very much and we would like to thank Errison and
Leo for supporting us all the way.” - Ade Amao (Magnetism class)
