Things You Oughta Know About Sheep For Fair

It has snuck up on us again, Fair and final things to think about with your sheep projects. First and foremost by this time of the summer you should have reweighed your market lamb and know how much you have gained and how that computes into a daily average gain for your record books. This will tell you if you are on target to hit your ideal weight for Fair or if you need to make some adjustments to your feed schedule- i.e. cut back or start pushing a little more feed. Large animal take in day at Fair is Tuesday August 29th. We will start weighing at 10:00am and finish at 8:00pm. If you have problems that day call one of us and we will try and accommodate you. It is a long, stressful day but we will try and make it as painless as possible. We are changing how we are coming into the north parking lot to line up to get to the scale so be sure and read the article on Fair Changes as it will help you be a little better prepared and know what to expect. Remember when you come to Fair you need more than just your animal. You will need a water bucket, feed, containers to store the feed in as well as any grooming equipment you will be using. Some people bring feed containers for grain and hay also for use in the individual pens. Shovels, rakes and wheel barrows are needed to keep your area clean and presentable to the public. If you are showing in showmanship be sure and check out the requirements for dress stated in the Fairbook. Just think black and white dress!! Clubs are required to have signage saying who they are and usually where they are from. You can decorate and make your area inviting to the public, there is no end or limit to what you can do as long as the aisles are clean and presentable. Barn supers judge your area every day of fair choosing a club daily for herdsmanship award. This is based on each member having pens clearly marked , cleanliness in stalls, storage area and aisles. It is very important that the 4-Her is doing the work, parents and leaders can supervise but actual work needs to be done by the youth. Finally, MANDATORY SHEEP MEETING is Tuesday night in Iman arena at 8:00pm. We will see you all there!! Any questions call Mary Koenen 239-4809, Cheri Hartless 360-3041, Margaret Yuhas 240-8220 or Extension 375-6611.

Some Changes at Fair 2017

We have three changes that impact 4-Hers and 4-H families. First is camping on the Fairgrounds. We are moving you back a little way in the north parking lot and configuring your area into a large U shape instead of spread out along the outer fence as in years past. Spaces are not going to be designated. You can camp as a club or individual whatever works best for you. We should have the area clearly marked so you know where your boundaries are. Camping Fees are $20.00 , you sign up and pay at the Fair office. At that time they will give you a decal. We are hoping this area will be yours, you will create how you want to park and line up campers.

Second, we are asking that horse trailers be parked in the back eastern part of the north lot. This lot has gotten very busy the last few years and we need the spaces upfront for every day parking. Trailers are problematic in that they take up at least two spaces and tend to get blocked in by the general public. Again signage will be in place directing you. Third area that has changed is the entrance and exit gates in the north lot. In recent years it has become apparent the entrance gate off the end of the hog barn has become increasingly dangerous. The view is blocked by the barn and we tend to use it as the entrance and exit gate often at the same time!! So the new entrance gate is on the far north end of the north lot and the exit gate is the gate in the middle of the north lot ( Yes that is the same exit gate we supposedly have always used). The gate off the end of the hog barn will be closed to vehicle traffic and made available to foot traffic only. Hopefully for weigh in day, Tuesday, August 29th this will make our traffic flow better. You should be able to come in, turn and go up the middle, line up with the fair entrance gate and be directed to hold until the scale is clear, this would be hog and sheep primarily or be told to proceed on if your barn is not congested. One more reminder that if you need to bring feed into the Fairgrounds and it is a larger amount you are allowed to drive in between 7:00am and 10:00am. If you think you will need to do this please get a livestock parking pass from the Fair Office. No vehicles are permitted on the Fairgrounds after 10:00am. This includes side by sides, 4 wheelers, etc. Looking forward to Fair 2017. If I can answer any questions please feel free to call me, Margaret Yuhas , 240-8220. OK to text!

Indoor Exhibit Interview Judging Tips Remember to:

Please come 15 minutes early (or more, depending on the amount of projects) if you have not picked up and attached your exhibit tags to your project. Tags can be picked up as early as August 11 from the Fairgrounds Premium Office.

Bring copies of recipes for food and nutrition entries.

Dress in either showmanship black and whites or business casual for your interview.

If you would like to prepare for your interview, pick up a judging sheet from the Extension Office. Email [email protected] or call the office at 375-6611.

For parking, enter Fairgrounds through South-East corner of Fairgrounds (west of Bitter Root Humane Association on Fairgrounds Road). Park in the arena parking lot. You can drive up to the fence near the metal and large grandstands, park and unload. You can then walk thorough the small gate in front of the grandstands onto the paved walkway for easy access and less congestion. A map can be found at http://ravalli.us/DocumentCenter/View/391

Review page 61 of the Fairbook for additional interview judging information.

Volunteers Needed for Upcoming Livestock Sale:

-Livestock Sale Breakfast Coordinator – Jayne Liles has coordinated the breakfast in the past and is looking for someone to shadow her this year. This person will then take over as the coordinator for the next year (2018) and until they decide to pass the torch to someone else. Prior to the fair, this person should expect about 8-10 hours of coordinating helpers for the day of the breakfast (Saturday, September 2, 2017), securing donations and submitting an equipment request to the Ravalli County Fairgrounds. Week of the fair, they will follow up on the equipment needs with the fairgrounds office. The day of the breakfast, this person will spend about 6 hours of setting up, running and cleaning up the breakfast with the help of other volunteers. After the fair, this person will write any thank you cards needed, return equipment, etc. If you are interested in any of these positions and would like more information, please contact me at the Extension Office to discuss these positions.

of you and your animal.

4H Families and Alumni - MISSING! The Summerdale 4H Club has been around a very long time (nearly 100 yrs!.) We have been searching high and low for two large scrapbooks that go way back in club history. They are 4-6 inches thick, and had wooden covers, and were filled with photos, newspaper clippings, and programs. If anyone knows where these might be, please contact Org Leader Jeanette Smith at 360-1184, or by email [email protected]. Surely they are sitting on someone’s shelf somewhere, collecting dust and looking for a home. Thanks!
