Main products
The Foundry produces mainly castings for truck, trailer and
tractor axles. Medium size castings (wheel hubs, planetary
carriers, differential carriers, diff. case halves, etc.) are
produced on Künkel-Wagner line, and the line equipped
with larger boxes produces axle housings, centre sections
and air suspension beams.
Engineer ing act iv i t ies
Efficient production is provided by advanced background
of information technology: the Foundry simulates the
pouring process (mould filling and solidification of casting)
by means of PRO/E and MAGNASOFT software.
Qual i ty
Advanced measuring equipment provides continuous
quality control of the products in the Foundry. Process
control is based on an SPC.

Core making
The Foundry applies procedures both with cold and hot
core boxes in RÖPER, KMAG, and SALCO machines. Cores
of the large-size castings are mainly produced manually.
Core making procedures applied are Croning (Shell), Beta-
set, resin-CO2, Furan sand.
Melt ing
Our Foundry uses two medium-frequency induction-
melting furnaces with a capacity of 8 tons/hour. The melt
iron gets into a 60-ton ASEA-produced furnace for storing
and homogenization. Fluid metal is nodularised in
IMCONOD. The 2-ton heats are poured into the boxes by
means of DEMAG pouring crane.
Recently, besides the production of
complete axles, the production and
direct sales of front and rear axle
components to the largest axle,
transmission and vehicle
manufacturers all over the world, like
ArvinMeritor, DANA Corporation, ZF,
Caterpillar, Scania, Volvo, MAN have
played a significant part in the
activities of Rába Axle Ltd. The
company’s competitiveness has been
increased by vertical integrity within
the company (own foundry, forging
and tool plants) as well as by the
development and test capacities and
competence suitable for the
development of complete axles and
their subassemblies, too. Axle
components are machined in
machining centres, high-capacity
special-purpose machines and
automatic production lines in the
company’s plants.
Case /hous ing- l ike par ts
These parts are elements in the
drivelines of drive axles, like
differential carriers, differential cases,
planetary carriers, axle housings,
suspension beams and centre sections.
The rough parts are being produced
in the company’s own foundry or
forging plant or they are purchased
from external foundries (especially
grey iron). The internal production
range covers fabricated axle housings,
too.
Production base for machining these
parts consists of CNC lathes and
machining centres that are capable of
producing among others 100
thousand differential carriers, 20
thousand fabricated and 10 thousand
cast axle housings as well as 20
thousand off highway transmission
housings.
P in ion and r ing gear sets
Rába has a very wide production
range of these products. Our company
is ready to produce ring gears from
small diameter dimensions (200 mm)
up to 500 mm with spiral and hypoid
gearing used in heavy-duty trucks. The
forged pinion and ring gears are
turned and then machined on Gleason
CNC gearing machines. Besides
traditional lapping (matching), these
pinion and ring gears can be ground
in Gleason Phoenix tooth grinder in
larger and larger volumes in order to
get more precise tooth profile, better
contact patterns and lower noise
levels. Rába is able to produce a total
of 80 000 pairs, out of which 25 000
are ground, while 55 000 lapped
pinion and ring gears, annually.
Steer ing knuck les
Recently, production capability of
knuckles constituting a crucial part of
the front axles has been developed in
the most extensive way in our
company. Rába has been supplying
light and heavy-duty knuckles to the
largest axle producers of heavy-duty
trucks all over the world. For several
years our company has been an
exclusive supplier of integral knuckles
that are forged in one with the tie rod
arms to ArvinMeritor. For the largest
volumes, the knuckles are machined in
automatic production lines, in other
cases they are produced in flexible
production lines built on machining
centres. Production capacity of the
knuckles is close to 200 thousand per
year.
Axle beams
The production of forged axle beams
is one of the strengths of Rába Axle.
Annually, a maximum of 140
thousand of beams can be produced.
Axle beam forgings are made by
counter blowing with automatic

material transfer,
and they are
machined in lines of
special-purpose
machines and in
increasing number
on special Unisign
CNC machining
centres. The
majority of these
products are
supplied to ArvinMeritor, Dana and Scania, however, they
are also installed into our own products, namely into low-
floor front axles.
Head assembl ies
In order to meet the customers’ requirements, the Axle Ltd.
produces single-and double reduction head assemblies by
assembling the case-
like parts and gears.
These sub-units are
assembled in
assembly lines
developed for this
purpose.
Other components
Production capacity
of Rába Axle Ltd. involves some further axle and driveline
components like spindles, brake spiders, wheel hubs, tie
rod and steering arms of steer axles, cardan yokes and axle
shafts.

• Machinery and equipment (modernizing and value
adding upgrading )
• Infrastructure rationalisation
In 2005 Rába Axle Ltd., in order to realize its strategic
objectives, signed a credit contract of HUF 6 billion (appr.
30 million USD) with the Hungarian Development Bank Plc.
Rába Axle was spending the loan mainly on financing its
modernizing and capacity enhancing investments. With the
help of this development, the company was continuously
upgrading its focused technologies to meet global
standards. The aim of this development was to further
boost the company’s market presence and to strengthen
its competitiveness through efficiency improvement.
Test ing , measur ing
Our company is continuously testing and inspecting its
products. In the company’s own test laboratory new
products are tested for performance, strength, lifetime,
vibration and noise. Also the customers who purchase parts
and subassemblies frequently utilise this opportunity. Up-
to-date measuring equipment (including several 3D
measuring devices) supports the good and stable quality of
production.
