    SEPTEMBER is YouthService Month

On September 10, 2014 BC President MaritesNepomuceno and PP Marcia Salvador of RCHoly Spirit met with the principal of Dona JuanaElementary School (DJES), Dr EmelyPelobello, and the teaching staff of the SPEDCenter in the school. The visit was purposelymade to conduct a needs assessment on theSPED Center in order to extend higher-impactassistance to the children with special needs.BCP Marites considers this a special project asa tribute to her deceased father whose favoritegrandson, Jalex, is a special child.

During the meeting with Ms Gloria Tatad, Mas-ter Teacher in charge of the SPED Center, andMs Mary Ann Dator, SPED Coordinator, it waslearned that a project long envisioned by theteachers is an activity room that has a kitchen, dining area, and bed-

room to allow the pupilsto learn simple everydayhousehold chores andmake them more re-sponsible members oftheir respective families.A room has been identi-fied for this purpose thatis presently used as astorage area. Oncecleared, the room will beassessed for possibleimprovements that need

to be made to transformit to be the envisionedactivity area. Anotherneed of the SPED Cen-ter is an air-conditioningunit or units that wouldmake learning comfort-able for the children withspecial needs, particu-larly during summertime.

    The above projects,

when realized, will reinforce the clubs coing commitment to assist the SPED Cenits mission to make special children prodmembers of society. For the past four RC Holy Spirit has been sharing cheerhope among SPED pupils and their pduring Christmas and Rotary New Year eThe club has also donated two refurbdesktop PCs with printers some time ago

The DJES Sped Center is run by five (5)mitted and dedicated teachers. Apart froTatad and Ms Dator, the other teachers aMary Dorothy Tolete, Mr Rhoda Padya-oMs Elsiemar Arnaiz who handle classautistic, intellectually-challenged, and heimpaired children.

PP Marcia Salvador and Best Class President Marites Nepomuceno are flanked by Ms MDator, SPED Coordinator, and Ms Gloria Tatad, Master Teacher in charge of the SPED C

One of the great privileges of beingpresident of Rotary International is hav-ing the chance to visit so many parts ofthe Rotary world. Usually I travel to par-ticipate in Rotary events; speak at Ro-

tary clubs, conferences, and institutes;and encourage Rotarians in their ser-vice. But as president, I am responsiblefor all branches of the Rotary family.

This means that it is also my privilege topport the service of Rotary's youngest generations: our

otaractors, Interactors, Rotary Youth Exchange students,nd Rotary Youth Leadership Awards participants.

hen I see the work Rotarians do, I am always impressed, ways excited, and always inspired. When I see the workour New Generations, I am all of this and frequently I

m surprised as well. Not by the quality of their workfor Iave learned to expect great things from them but by theeativity and ingenuity of their thinking. I look at what they

ave done and think not just "What a great job!" but "Whatgreat idea!" Because every generation sees the world inunique way, and every individual has a unique point ofew. Faced with the same problems, we arrive at differentlutions. This is why, in Rotary, our diversity of culture,

nguage, expertise, gender, and ageis our strength.

Rotary, we try to take the long view in our service. Wepire to serve in ways that will make a lasting difference,at will continue to have an impact after our participation

nds. Our younger generations, in my experience, shares sentiment, and apply it globally, by focusing on envi-nmental issues in new and innovative ways. When I be-me a Rotarian, environmental issues were barely on ourdar. To young people today, these concerns are front

nd center. Their perspective is a valuable contribution toe world of Rotary service, and it is one that we should all

ncourage and support. Just as they are learning from us, should we be learning from them.

he young people who are serving in Rotaract and Inter-ct, and participating in Youth Exchange and RYLA today,

e the Rotarians of tomorrow. When we support them, wee supporting the future of our entire organization. We are

elping to train the men and women who will be the clubesidents, district governors, RI directors, and RI presi-

    ents of tomorrow.

    Help us reach our goal.

Rotarians are generous people. give to many good, charitable caustheir communities but in many instado not support their own charity:Rotary Foundation. This Rotary year, I would like toevery Rotary club make a contribto our Rotary Foundation.

Remember that the good we do in the world is limitedby the contributions we receive. And when we give tFoundation, we are not sending cash to Evanston are helping a blind man to see, a polio victim to wachild to grow to adulthood healthily, a student to becbetter educated, and a family to have food to eat.

Each year, the trustees of The Rotary Foundation goal for the Annual Fund the fund that feeds the WFund. This year, the goal is US$123 million, with Rotarian being asked to contribute a minimum of $1am conscious that this figure would mean more in scountries than others. But Rotarians should give acing to their means.

The slogan Every Rotarian, Every Year means exthat. Every Rotarian should make a contribution toFoundation every year. Make it a priority this year tpress on your club the importance of every club suping our Foundation in some way.

As I said at the outset, Rotarians are generous peoam sure you will translate that generosity into givinour Rotary Foundation.

It is up to each and every one of us to do so.
