300.11 ft. The feature tractor for the Farmer

Day pull was owned by Mike Hara-pchuk, which was a John Deere 820. This is a little of the history as told by Mike about the tractor.

I purchased this John Deere 820 tractor from Leon Chalafue a welder in the Wildwood area in about 2007. Leon had taken the tractor in trade for a 4020 John Deere. The 820 was supposed to be a good runner, but when I went and picked up the trac-tor it was 30 below and would not start. I pulled it into the lowboy and hauled it home. My brother Darcy helped me pull the tractor for 3 hours at 0 degrees weather. After two cans of ether it was still a no go. We then pulled it into the shop, Lorne Mil-burn and I pulled the engine apart only to find the motor was totally worn out.

My son Aaron and I went to Sas-katoon, Saskatchewan to get parts [block-head, rods, crankshaft and pistons]. I put the motor together, us-ing my finger I adjusted the injector pump, finally making it pull better. While pulling I’m always adjusting the throttle to almost stopping, then speeding it up. By doing so I seem to gain more footage on my pulls.

The winners on Saturday drivers draw were:

• Cliff Schultz – UFA Fuel Card –$ 50.00

• Magnus Hansen – Peavey mart Gift Card – $50.00

The winners on Sunday drivers draw were:

• Bob McKell – UFA Fuel Card -

$50.00• Russell Langston – Peavey Mart

Gift Card – $50.00Good Luck to all the Winners. The club held a Silent Auction on

Saturday, and a good selection of items were donated to the club for the auction and was very successful. Lots of interesting items and some-thing for everyone.

The club presented Hal Louheed with an Honorary Membership to the club. He was presented with a framed certificate in honor of being the age of 80 years old or older. Hal Lougheed was the third member to be given a certificate.

We had a new announcer this year

at the tractor pull by the name of Ken Black, which he did a very good job and after the pull was over he sat down and wrote a very nice poem.

Tamara Hall was there with her lunch again this year, and a very good lunch it was. Lots of her home-made goodies as usual and many of good pies. Her son Gideon helped her again his year. Very good lunch again.

Ralph and Shari Eichhorn were at the pull with the popcorn and cotton candy again this year. The smell of the popcorn could be smelt all over the grounds making you want to eat some and lots of people did. Very good Ralph and Shari.

The Club served a Pork supper with salads, baked beans, homemade buns and bread, which made for a very good meal. Ice cream was for dessert. Next day all the left over from Saturday was served for sup-per again. The ladies that cooked the meal did a superb job, as it was a very good meal. This meal was served to all the drivers and volun-teers who worked hard to make the tractor pull a success again this year.

The next tractor pull will be held the long weekend of September, which will be September 3rd. & 4th. Hope to see you all at the next trac-tor pull.

GREETINGS FROM THE ONOWAY LEGIONSubmitted by Lorinda Mc-

Cool

President Scott Sadler and Mem-bership Chairperson Cheryl Sadler re-turned from the Royal Canadian Legion Command Convention held this year in Newfoundland with many great stories and the following wonderful post: “Find

out how the Legion helps Veterans and their families leave the streets behind and turn their lives around through na-tional and provincial programs and sup-port for homeless Veterans and those at risk: http:// bit.ly/1Xb7f2S. Supporting Veterans is our Duty.” Thank you Scott and Cheryl for representing The Onoway Legion at such a prestigious event.

The Glazed Ham Supper was an ex-cellent choice for the June 17th Friday Night Supper. Over forty diners enjoyed the meal prepared by Allen, Ron, Mar-celle, Pat and Eleanor while Samantha and Zackery did a great job of table duty. Regular customer Leroy Coley will be using his free meal voucher at one of our next meals, Dave Ritla won the meat

draw and Shauna Johnson was the lucky 50/50 winner. There will not be a Friday Night Meal on July 1st so that our vol-unteers can also enjoy the Canada Day festivities but everyone will be hard at work in the kitchen for the July 8th very popular Crispy Chicken Supper.

Dart players must be missing the regu-lar Tuesday Night Darts as the June 21st games were attended by 26 eager play-ers. Thanks to Liane for her friendly bar service and to Scott for not only orga-nizing the teams so soon after returning from his trip but also for volunteering on his and Cheryl’s 26th Anniversary.

GOVERNMENT CONSULTATION ON WCB

FRAUDULENT TRANSACTIONS

Submitted by Hon. Oneil Carlier

Thousands of people benefit from the Workers Compensation Board every year and unlike other private forms of insurance, WCB has government legislated speci-fications for organizational opera-tions, accountability and compen-sation.

It is also a guaranteed “no fault” insurance option. No matter who may have been at fault for an acci-dent, you will be covered for your workplace injury. That being said, organizations and policy can al-ways be improved upon and ben-efit from a review.

The previous government had not done a review of WCB in over 15 years, which is why the NDP government felt a review was long overdue for Albertans. To make sure we hear the diverse perspec-tives of all Albertans, this review involves a thorough public con-sultation process on how we can improve upon WCB as a resource for workers.

The Workers’ Compensation Board review is part of the gov-ernment’s commitment to review its agencies, boards and commis-sions. It’s being conducted by an independent three-member panel with extensive experience in rep-resenting workers and employers through Alberta’s workers’ com-pensation system. This review also includes the Appeals Commission for Alberta Workers’ Compensa-tion and the Medical Panel Office.

We want to hear from Alberta’s workers, business owners, labour representatives and industry asso-ciations through written submis-sions and an online questionnaire which will be available until July 15th, 2016.

Following the questionnaire and submissions, the panel will work with these key groups through the fall and winter to examine issues

in greater detail. The panel is ex-amining the WCB’s governance and effectiveness, relevant legis-lation, the principles of compensa-tion and policies - including those related to privacy and confidenti-ality - and the transparency of pro-

cesses and decision-making. The panel is expected to provide

a progress update to government in fall 2016 and a final report in spring 2017.

You can have participate by going to www.alberta.ca/wcb-

review-get-involved.aspx or contacting our office at 780-786-1997/1-800-786-7136 or [email protected]

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE COUNTY OF LAC STE ANNE RATEPAYERS AND

RESIDENTS WITHOUT PREJUDICEWITH COPIES TO MINISTER DANIELLE LARIVEE,

MLA – MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE O’NEIL CARLIERAs one of the Representatives of

the petitioners, I felt it is time to bring everyone up to date with all the issues we have attempted to address as a group.

On October 1, 2015, we deliv-ered a petition to the office of the Minister of Municipal Affairs. The petition was the fourth one that the ratepayers had signed in less than 3 years. This one was very specific in its request which was to “Request an inquiry into the affairs of Lac Ste Anne Coun-ty Council and its administration” We have lost faith in the ability of our administration and our coun-cil to fairly represent the Ratepay-ers of our communities.

Prior to presenting the petition under 254 of the Municipal Gov-ernment Act, we spent many hours as a group, ensuring that all the ad-dresses were complete, affidavits were included with each signature sheet. We packaged each group of signatures with their affidavits so the process would be easy to review. We were of the under-standing according to the provi-sions of the Act that after a 30 day period, the petition would have to be declared for sufficiency or lack thereof. We wrote, we called, we emailed. The only information we received was a Letter from the Minister dated November 2, 2015 that she had assigned the petition to be reviewed. That was already a month since we delivered it to the office of the Minister, met

with the Deputy Assistant Man-ager and were assured that the process would be followed. On March 17, 2016, five and a half months, 169 days from the date we delivered 2,543 signatures, we received a letter from the Minis-ter of Municipal Affairs Danielle Larivee. The letter was to advise that the petition was declared insufficient. The reviewer had excluded 558 signatures leaving 1,985, She went on to state that she would not be requesting an inquiry. We immediately request-ed the basis for the exclusion of the 558 signatures. The response came April 28, 2016 again a delay of an inordinate amount of time, six weeks wasted. Verification for their reasoning:

1. Seven due to the inability to read printed name or part of the printed name was missing.

2. Three were excluded due to not being electors of the munici-pality.

3. 77 Due to lack of witness af-fidavit

4. 498 excluded as they were incomplete or incorrect according to the tax roll

I can tell you that we have once again written requesting the names that they have excluded and what signatures were lacking affidavits. Let’s see how long it takes them to respond this time.

During these years that our group of many volunteers sought your signatures, our Council and

Administration have continued on the very path the ratepayers told them they did not want to travel. In our opinion, they have acted in contravention of components of the MGA, skirted the TILMA agreements boundaries, borrowed without conscience or remorse. Yet… our Government continues to support them. Do you think that maybe there are other agen-das here? While the Municipal Government was busy dragging their heels, council and adminis-tration rushed to begin construc-tion of THEIR new administration building. You notice I called it THEIRS. It will never be OURS as it is not what WE wanted. By rushing the process and not being fiscally responsible at a time when Ratepayers are losing their jobs, taking wage cuts, job sharing, re-cord unemployment in the Prov-ince, Council and Administration incurred additional costs. You see they did not do their home-work on the land they purchased for an inflated price. There was a borrow pit from the highway that was built some years ago on this land. This all had to be excavated and new material brought in. This bungle was at a cost of $37,828 that was issued as a change order. You and I paid for this.

Before the construction began, it was already common knowledge that the MSI ( Municipal Sus-tainability Initiative) Grant funds would not be guaranteed, Lineal

assessments would change, oil companies would not be funding the tax base due to all the shut ins due to the collapse of the price of oil. The County of Lac Ste Anne has the highest mill rate in the Province for Industry. Are we open for business? I think not.

Now lets move on to the bridg-es in our County. The Provincial Government no longer provides grant funding for bridge main-tenance. We have 217 bridges within our boundaries. An updat-ed Capital Bridge plan was sup-posed to be completed by an out-side firm in November of 2015. (The County has engineers em-ployed so why once again are we paying for outside consultants?) That report is supposed to tell us how many are beyond repair, how many are in dire need of repair and how many are not at risk. We are still waiting for this document. You and I are paying for the con-sultant and the emergency repairs on some of these bridges with no plan apparently as we have not seen it even though we have re-quested it in writing on a number of occasions.

While all of these things are go-ing on, they think we aren’t pay-ing attention and they purchase the old Lac Ste Anne Gas building with some land on the East end. This is supposed to placate those on the East end of the County, so they will feel like they are not being forgotten. Buy more land with a dilapidated building so as ratepayers we can spend yet even more money! Now the borrowing bylaw for an additional Million dollars for renovation. That does not include the purchase price, the need for upgrades to the road to the tune of over $300,000, and the $900,000 in the proposed budget. If it includes the monies forecast-ed in the budget, then why the need to borrow it?

An Open Letter To The County Of Lac Ste Anne Ratepayers And Residents Without PrejudiceContinued From Page 16

There are several parcels that the County owns on the East end that would have been a great location for a new building. Better yet, had the County Council and its current administration worked in unison with all the other summer villages , hamlets and towns in the County, the need for this building would not exist. It is as a direct result of them refusing to work in unison and the collapse of all agreements that were years in the making for Fire and Emergency Services. The Mayors have been meeting for months on this very issue. Mayerthorpe, Onoway, Al-berta Beach and several summer villages all wrote to the Muncipal Government letting them know that they could not work with the County. The answer was to throw $50,000 at it, hire a few media-tors that had no power to make anything they did come up with, binding! The county was the first to step away from the table.

When we put our pen to pa-per to vote, we voted for people who assured us that they would act in our best interest. Fiscally, morally, have these assurances been met? With deficits for de-bentures that we did not want or need? When the Division 5 seat became vacant, we asked for a by election. They don’t want one. What are they afraid of? Are they concerned that someone will hold them accountable? A by election in one division is minimal cost and with all the waste that has taken place here, I have no issue requesting that a by election be held so the folks of Division 5 at least have someone at the table.

There are new agreements, con-tracts being written every day. Are they in the best interest of the people of this County? How would we know when there is no transparency? Is all the informa-tion being shared with the Coun-cil that sit at the table?

When we began the process of the third petition, we requested a list of eligible people in the Coun-ty that were able to vote. They don’t maintain one. At least that is what they told us. SO of the 10, 260 folks that purportedly reside

in the county, by assumption with the 2011 census, roughly 7500 of those people would be eligible to vote. Over 33% took the time to sign the last petition. In 16 work-ing days, 2543 representing each and every division of the County of Lac Ste Anne signed asking for an inquiry into the Affairs of the County of Lac Ste Anne. The Municipal Government Act (s153) states in part that council-ors have the following duties, “to consider the welfare and interests of the Municipality as a whole”.

Council clearly has the obligation to look at the big picture.

As a direct result of the lack of representation by our current Council and Administration, our group is forming a Rate Payers Association. This will not only keep us in unison as Ratepayers, it will also provide us the opportu-nity to fund raise to bring the dog to the fight. It is not reasonable to continue with the lack of lead-ership and accountability. We will have memberships available in the very near future and are going

to be looking for your support as a member. If you would like fur-ther information, please feel free to contact me. I will endeavor to get the information regarding the Association out to the Ratepayers as quickly as possible once the or-ganization is registered.

SANGUDO COMMUNITY SCHOOL WILL HAVE A NEW PRINCIPAL THIS SEPTEMBER!

Submitted by Lisa Bakos

We are pleased to welcome Ms. Jo-Ann McLaren to Northern Gateway Public Schools in her new position as Principal of Sangudo Community School. The position became avail-able following Mr. Leonard Oates’ announcement that he will be retir-ing at the end of this school year.

Ms. McLaren comes to us from Fort Smith, in the Northwest Ter-ritories, where she is currently the Vice Principal and Instructional Coach for J.B.T. Elementary School. As a key member of the Leadership Team, Ms. McLaren’s experience extends to all aspects of school ad-ministration with a focus on Litera-cy, Numeracy and Teacher Growth and Development.

Ms. McLaren has been teaching for 15 years. Over the course of her career, she has taught both elementa-ry and secondary grades and served as a sessional instructor in the Teach-er Education program at Aurora Col-lege. She has been involved with the creation of the Northwest Territories Language Arts and Math bench-marks for Grades 7 to 9, has served as a mentor in the Teacher Induction Program - coaching, advising, mod-eling and building partnerships to facilitate a smooth transition for first year teachers and teachers new to the north - and is a certified counsellor.

“Jo-Ann brings a unique combina-tion of skills and knowledge to the position,” commented Superinten-dent of Schools Kevin Andrea. “Her dedication to the social, emotional and academic development of both students and staff, combined with her administrative experience, will be an excellent fit for Sangudo Com-munity School.”

Ms. McLaren holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Brock University, Ontario, a Bachelor of Education from Medaille College, Buffalo, NY and a Master of Edu-cation in Educational Foundations with a specialization in Counselling Psychology from the University of New Brunswick.

Ms. McLaren shared, “I look for-ward to joining the team at Sangudo Community School and to getting to know the students, staff and parents as we collectively build and nurture a respectful and engaging communi-ty of leaders and learners.”

GRASMERE STUDENTS IN

JASPER!

Submitted by Lisa Bakos

Grasmere Grade 7’s enjoyed learning in the great outdoors last week. The group traveled to Jasper and stayed overnight at the Palisades Stewardship Edu-cation Centre where they spent time learning about the environ-ment, orienteering and respect-ful treatment of the outdoors.

They played indigenous games, learned how to use a GPS track-er, worked on team building activities, built a fire and much more.

Grasmere Principal Shelley Wyman spoke for the school sharing that they “wanted to do something fun for the Grade 7’s, to commemorate their last year” at the school.

ONOWAY MUSEUM - FUN FOR ALL AGES

Submitted by Yvonne Slemko, Onoway and Dis-trict Historical Guild

Once school is out, many people find time to explore, to visit and just to enjoy life more than during the school year. One of the things to include on your “To Do” list is a visit Onoway Museum. If family or friends are visiting, stop by the museum. If they attended school in Onoway, they’ll want to check out the decades of class photos from Onoway Elementary School that line the hallways. Exploring the main exhibit rooms can lead to plen-ty of nostalgia and memory-sharing. Newcomers and visitors will take a step back in time and learn about lo-cal history.

Exhibits change on a regular ba-sis. 4-H is the focus of the current exhibit in the Heritage Centre. And

you can discover at lot you didn’t know about the village/town of On-oway and its businesses when you stroll through the main hallway in the museum.

Special programs designed for children will be offered – they’ll play games that were part of ev-eryday life back in the days of the country school house, they’ll learn to make butter, they’ll discover ob-jects that were important elements of everyday life but no longer exist (other than in museums!). Pre-regis-tration by phoning 780.967.1015 is recommended.

The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. un-til 3:00 p.m. throughout during July and August. With adequate advance notice, arrangements can be made for visits on weekends or outside regular hours.
