Christmas Festivities Around The World
Finnish kids leave out a sheaf of grain, nuts
and seeds, tied on a pole in the garden for
birds.
In Argentina, children place their shoes out-
side the front door to be filled by the Three
Kings with presents and leave hay and wa-
ter for the King's horses.
Christmas in the Czech Republic begins
with the visit of Svaty Mikalas, who climbs
down to earth from heaven using a golden
rope, carrying a sack filled with presents for
good children and a sack filled with sticks
for naughty ones.
Muslims do not have Christmas, but in Oc-
tober or November, they celebrate the
Greater Eid with special family meals,
sweet foods, new clothes, gifts, prayers and
giving to the poor.
In India, many people celebrate Diwali, by
lighting small clay lamps filled with oil to
signify the triumph of good over evil. These
lamps are kept on during the night, the
house is cleaned, and firecrackers are burst
in order to drive away spirits.
Swedish Christmas celebrations begin with
Saint Lucy’s Day when candles and glowing
stars are placed in every window. Presents
are brought by the Jultomte, an invisible
gnome who watches over the house. If you
don’t feed the Jultomte with a small bowl of
porridge, he will bring bad luck!

28th – Earthquake in Newcastle in 1989.
11 people died.
How many of these do you remember???
1. Norwegian scientists have hypothesized that Rudolph’s red nose is probably the result of a parasitic infection of his respir-atory system.
2. The Germans made the first artificial Christmas trees out of dyed goose feath-ers.
3. Each year more than 3 billion Christmas cards are sent in the U.S. alone.
4. All the gifts in the Twelve Days of Christ-mas would equal 364 gifts.
5. The “true love” mentioned in the song “Twelve Days of Christmas” does not re-fer to a romantic couple, but the Catholic Church’s code for God. The person who receives the gifts represents someone who has accepted that code. For example, the “partridge in a pear tree” represents Christ. The “two turtledoves” represent the Old and New Testaments.
6. A parasitic infection may be the cause of Rudolph's red nose. Most of Santa’s rein-deer have male-sounding names, such as Blitzer, Comet, and Cupid. However, male reindeers shed their antlers around Christ-mas, so the reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh are likely not male, but female or castrati.
7. In A.D. 350, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the offi-cial celebration date for the birthday of Christ.
8. According to the Guinness world records, the tallest Christmas tree ever cut was a 221-foot Douglas fir that was displayed in 1950 at the Northgate Shopping Center in
Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
Seattle, Washington.
9. The traditional three colors of Christmas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty.
10. Two weeks before Christmas is a popu-lar time for couples to break up. Accord-ing to data analyzed from Facebook posts, two weeks before Christmas is one of the two most popular times for couples to break up. However, Christmas Day is the least favorite day for breakups.
11. Contrary to popular belief, suicide rates during the Christmas holiday are low. The highest rates are during the spring.
12. The world’s largest Christmas stocking measured 106 feet and 9 inches (32.56 m) long and 49 feet and 1 inch (14.97 m) wide. It weighed as much as five rein-deer and held almost 1,000 presents. It was made by the Children’s Society in London on December 14, 2007.
13. Christmas trees have been sold in the U.S. since 1850.
14. Christmas trees usually grow for about 15 years before they are sold.
15. Many European countries believed that spirits, both good and evil, were active during the Twelve Days of Christmas. These spirits eventually evolved into Santa’s elves, especially under the influ-ence of Clement C. Moore’s The Night Before Christmas(1779-1863) illustrated by Thomas Nast (1840-1902).
16. Each year there are approximately 20,000 “rent-a-Santas” across the United
States. “Rent-a-Santas” usually undergo seasonal training on how to maintain a jolly attitude under pressure from the public. They also receive practical ad-vice, such as not accepting money from parents while children are looking and avoiding garlic, onions, or beans for lunch.
17. Bolivians celebrate Misa del Gallo or “Mass of the Rooster” on Christmas Eve. Some people bring roosters to the mid-night mass, a gesture that symbolizes the belief that a rooster was the first animal to announce the birth of Jesus.
18. The British wear paper crowns while they eat Christmas dinner. The crowns are stored in a tube called a “Christmas cracker.”
19. In Poland, spiders or spider webs are common Christmas trees decorations be-cause according to legend, a spider wove a blanket for Baby Jesus. In fact, Polish people consider spiders to be symbols of goodness and prosperity at Christmas
20. Alabama was the first state in the United States to officially recognize Christmas in 1836.

There was once a great czar in Russia named Rudolph the Red. He stood looking out the windows of is palace one
day while his wife, the Czarina Katerina, sat nearby knitting. He turned to her and said, "Look my dear, it has
begun to rain!" Without even looking up from her knitting she replied, "It's too cold to rain. It must be
sleeting." The Czar shook his head and said, "I am the Czar of all the Russias, and Rudolph the Red knows rain,
dear!" Answers on page 12

Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Merry Christmas
An Engineer's View of Santa Claus No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen. There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the work-load to 15% of the total - 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an aver-age (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each. Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the ro-tation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will ac-cept), we are now talking about 0.78 miles per household, a total trip of 71.604 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding etc. This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour. The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized Lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional rein-deer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could pull TEN TIMES the normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison - this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth. 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as space crafts re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy per second each. In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be va-porized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifu-gal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrous-ly slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force. In conclusion - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's been vaporized by now!
