CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION ......................................................................................................................... in unison God of abundant goodness, we confess that we want your grace for ourselves, but sometimes wish punishment or exclusion on others. We judge the efforts and motives of neighbors while ignoring the faults of our own. Forgive us, we pray, when we are jealous in the face of your generosity. Forgive us, we pray, when we look more to our own needs than the needs of others. May we ask once again for your mercy? Will you help us be merciful to one another? We pray in the name of Christ Jesus, by whose grace we are saved ….

**AFFIRMATION OF FAITH ................................................................................................. The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only son,
our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from
the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and
the life everlasting. Amen.

Music Notes by Rebecca te Velde
Prelude and Postlude: Johann Gottfried Walther (born Sept. 18, 1684, died 1748) was a cousin, friend, and esteemed colleague of J. S. Bach. Organist and court musician in Weimar, Walther also wrote the very first musical encyclopedia, Musicalisches Lexicon, in 1732. Today’s prelude is his cheerful setting of hymn #35 (Glory to God). Each phrase of the hymn melody is introduced in the upper parts and then heard in long notes in the pedals. The postlude toccata begins rhapsodically, then settles into a long section of busy manual figurations over pedal-points. One last recitative-like outburst ends in a solid, authoritative final cadence.
Special Music: We thank Sam Markmiller for serving as our cantor and soloist this morning. Sam joined the tenor section of Chancel Choir just before spring break. His solo is an arrangement of the traditional spiritual “Walk Together Children”, wonderfully arranged by Moses Hogan.
