Four typical identity types forreturnees (Sussman 2002)1. Affirmative identity (happy returnee, no

stress, not integrated into host country)2. Subtractive identity (sad returnee because

alienated from home country culture,integrated well into host country)

3. Additive identity (sad returnee becausemisses host culture, integrated well into hostcountry)

4. Global identity (positive or neutral returnexperience, integrated well into host country,has often lived abroad previously)

• Being judgemental about home• Feeling like you do not fit in• Being exhausted and overwhelmed• Feelings of sadness

Advice

• Do not set presumptions for your life after theexchange

• Give yourself time to readjust• Update yourself about life in Finland• Be interested in othersà Everyone has

changed, not just you• Find a balance while comparing your two

”home” countries• Remember: Above all, your exchange period

is an asset!
