Bella Vista Projects extended whole-hearted support by providing manpower and machineries to the rescue force and efficiently partnering other government officials and the NDRF.

The voluntary services provided by the site teams won accolades from the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and the Chennai Police and letters of appreciation were presented for their timely support. Kudos to the team that swung into action to save more than 50 lives who were trapped.

The letter of appreciation was

handed over by Mr. Pankaj

Kumar Bansal, MD CMRL, to

Project Director, Mr. S.V. Rao

along with Deputy Project Di-

rector, Mr. Hu Hai Bin in the

presence of Mr. V.K. Singh,

GM., CMRL.

Editor’s NotE “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe” Abraham Lincoln

In the Quarter April – June we were in fact sharpening our minds and knowledge in the CSR space and had many such activities to remain focused on L&T’s CSR in the new regime.

Innumerable interactions and activities were held across the length and breadth of L&T. It had the participation of our own Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility Teams [SCSR], many senior personnel were roped into these workshops while an Online Survey was also conducted. In the final analysis, after the budgets

were reviewed and debated, the CSR Committee of the Board at L&T has outlined major areas of CSR Thrust.

While the overall theme would be ‘Building India’s Social Infrastructure’ its 4 elements would be:

1. Water2. Education3. Health 4. Skill development

‘One-off events’ such as marathons / awards / charitable contribution / advertisement / sponsorships of TV programmes, etc. would not be qualified as part of

CSR expenditure. The new norm and the Act desires that corporates carry on CSR initiatives in a ‘Project Mode’. Each CSR activity is now to be monitored on the project mode, whereby;

•   There is a definite objective  purpose behind the activity

•   A  firm  date  of  beginning and completion

•   Has  a  process  owner responsible from both ends,

•   With  frequent  and  timely monitoring of the progress

•    Needs  a  final  qualitative and quantitative review of the end-result along with amount spent

•   Impacting a total number of beneficiaries

L&T Construction takes a big share of what we can do and ought to do in CST within the L&T conglomerate… And we know that we are all in it together – as we have been in the past!

The HQ Chennai CSR Cell at L&T Construction has been strengthened. We are always there to support you, make things better and impactful in your ‘Reaching Out’ to the stakeholders. Infact we are just an email away! [email protected]

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity, and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.

A common buzzword “Raise

Your Voice: Not the Sea Lev-

el“ echoed loud and clear

across L&T Construction’s

HQ Campus on June 5, 2014

on the occasion of the World

Environment Day. The global

theme adopted by United

Nations Environment Pro-

gramme (UNEP) on green

awareness was celebrated

through a series of Go Green

events which was kick-start-

ed by the senior executives

and drew the patronage of a

large number of employees.

Pedaling towards a

healthier life!

The daylong events com-

menced with the inaugura-

tion of the ‘Cycle Bay’ at the

HQ campus by Mr. S N Sub-

rahmanyan, Member on the

L&T Board & Sr. Executive

Vice President (Infrastruc-

ture & Construction), Mr. M

V Satish, Senior VP & Head

– B&F IC and Mr. S Kanap-

pan, Head & Chief Execu-

tive, L&T GeoStructure. The

cycles, meant for employees’

use for inter campus com-

mute, are aimed at getting

them used to a greener mode

of transportation and even

urge them to adopt cycling

as their choice for daily com-

mute to office.

A new leash of life!

A large environment-con-

scious set of people were en-

gaged in planting saplings to

mark their unwavering com-

mitment towards the green

cause. Saplings were planted

by SNS, Mr & Mrs MVS, Mr

& Mrs B. Ramakrishna, Mr.

Kanappan, Mrs. Nirmala

Anathakumar of Prayas, Mr.

V S Ramana, Mr B Murug-

esan and other members of

the Samaaja Seva Committee

of the ECC Recreation Club,

Merchandise that make a

difference!

Following the sapling plan-

tation, the dignitaries pro-

ceeded towards the AR Cen-

tre where several stalls that

promote green products were

inaugurated by the members

of Prayas Trust, Chennai.

Visitors took keen interest

in the stalls that displayed

products such as organic

food, terracotta accessories,

bamboo based gardening

implements, seeds, vermin

compost, planter boxes, etc.

To promote a healthy life-

style, stalls that focused on

participation in marathons

using cycles and developing

healthy eating habits were

also part of the exciting ex-

hibition that drew crowds

in large numbers throughout

the day.

A rendezvous with nature

@ Project GreenHands

SNS along with senior ex-

ecutives took a tour of the

Project GreenHands nursery

– a unique green movement,

that has in the last 5 years

nurtured and planted over

2,50,000 saplings across Ta-

mil Nadu through the collec-

tive efforts of the L&T Con-

struction’s Green Brigade.

How Green is your

consciousness?

While the celebrations con-

tinued throughout the day, it

was also an occasion to propa-

gate the green word across the

L&T fraternity and their fami-

lies through an on-line quiz,

photography and poster com-

petitions. The on-line quiz had

more than 2000 participants

while the children of employ-

ees expressed their creativ-

ity and eagerness to save the

world through their poster

paintings.

Green competitionwinners at WED 2014As a part of the World Environment Day campaign at HQ

Chennai, poster painting and photography contests were

held for the L&T fraternity and their families. Both the com-

petitions had a large number of participants and highlighted

strong messages on environment protection. The paintings

by children communicated the importance of green ini-

tiatives and also portrayed the consequences if protective

measures are not taken. A professional jury reviewed the

entries and selected the three presentations. The on-line

quiz had an overwhelming participation of 2074 employ-

ees. Noted environmentalist, Mr. ‘Vellore’ C Srinivasan of the

Satyameva Jeyate fame, the chief guest for the valedictory

function, distributed the prizes to the winners.

A bio gas plant has been set

up at Orient Cement Pro-

ject, Chittapur to effectively

manage food waste and

develop alternative energy.

Set up by Calorifiqe Renew-

able Energie, Hyderabad, the

plant at the workmen camp

utilizes food waste amount-

ing to 500kgs per day, which

generates up to 27kgs of

fuel for cooking. The 100

liters manure produced by

Bio gas plant at orient cement project helps generate alternative energy

the plant is being used for

gardening.

Mr. B. Srinivasa Rao, CPM,

HYCL B&F IC along with Mr.

G. Madhava Kumar, Clus-

ter EHS Manager and Mr.

Kishore. A. Chalke, Cluster

Materials Manager sup-

ported this initiative along

with the project team and

the bio gas plant was inau-

gurated on 26th March by

Mr. Singhania, Vice Presi-

dent Projects, Orient Cement

with a customary milk boil-

ing ceremony.

This first-of-its-kind initia-

tive taken by a project team

is a skid mounted type bio

gas plant that can be easily

shifted from one project site

to another.

Environmental awareness session

The day concluded with

key note address by the

noted environmentalist

‘Vellore’ C Srinivasan on

“Integrated & Sustainable

Solid and Liquid Resource

Management (SLRM). He

is spearheading the waste

management movement for

past two decades and has

created a long lasting im-

pact in various parts of the

country. The session was un-

doubtedly resourceful about

waste management. The ses-

sion elaborated on source

segregation of waste into

bio degradable and non-bio

degradable waste, compost-

ing of bio degradable waste

(home based), terrace gar-

dening etc. The environ-

mental speech backed by

visuals reminded everyone

of an individual’s responsi-

bility towards resource con-

servation and the need for

environmental friendly liv-

ing. The documentary titled

“Garbage to Gold” was also

screened which showcased

a development model from

Vellore on Zero waste man-

agement.

the importance and benefits

of trees and an individual’s

responsibility towards plant-

ing at least two saplings to

have 33% green cover which

is essential for healthy liv-

ing. The participants were

divided into groups and en-

gaged in activities like soil

filling in packs, transplanting

saplings, cleaning of the OSR

area, seeding, etc. Totally

1176 packets were filled with

soil, 400 saplings were trans-

planted and 650 saplings

were transferred.

Dr. K A Shanmugasundaram

from the Tamil Nadu Agri-

cultural University graced

the occasion and shared his

ideas on kitchen gardening,

rooftop gardening and home

composing. A demonstration

was made on preparing ma-

nure from kitchen waste and

wealth out of waste. It was a

fun filled day for the partici-

pants especially the kids who

loved cladding themselves in

the mud and water and had

a welcome break from their

routine schedule. The team

enjoyed a natural breakfast

and also played a few fun

Chennai was painted crimson by 5000 runners wearing bright

red T-shirts who participated in the 2014 edition of the Dream

Runners Half Marathon that was flagged off at 5 am from near

Elliot Beach, Besant Nagar in Chennai. Those who enthusi-

astically participated included athletes, first time runners,

children, elderly people and even a few differently abled who

challenged the odds to finish with exhilaration amidst loud

shrieks of cheering from those gathered at the finish point.

L&T was one of the sponsors of the event and had about 154

registrations with 54 doing the 21 km ‘half marathon’ and the

rest doing the 10 km run. It is a matter of great significance

that each year, the number of L&T-ites graduating to the half

marathon is increasing which indicates a positive trend in the

health and fitness awareness among employees. Many vet-

eran runners of L&T clocked their personal best at this event

and almost all of those who registered managed to complete

the marathon and return back proudly flashing their finisher

medals.
