CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE2017 is the eighth year of MyKasih Foundation’s existence. We could not have reached out and delivered aid to 230,000 families all over the country if it was not for the support received from you – our donors and community partners.

Dear Friends,he donations MyKasih receives help families with basic needs such as food and educational support for children as well as skills training and job placements.

This is especially critical, with the rise in the cost of living.

Children living in poverty remain a significant target group to be assisted. Since the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ student bursary programme kicked-off in 2012, more than 11,000 primary and secondary school children have been nourished and given the learning materials they need to be able to participate fully in school.

We are grateful to our donors, like Cenviro Group, ConocoPhillips Malaysia, and Kajang Rocks Group, for their continuing efforts in reaching out to feed financially-strained families and educate children through the bursary scheme. I would also like to thank the Rotarians for continuing their collaboration with us through the Rotary Kasih programme to provide bursaries and educational support to underprivileged children.

In this issue, we highlight the results of our tenth empowerment and entrepreneurship income-generation programme for a community of MyKasih food aid recipients in Carey Island, Selangor. I would like to thank HSBC Bank Malaysia for partnering MyKasih since 2010, supporting programmes aimed at empowering aid recipients to achieve financial independence through entrepreneurship.

My wife and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the love and encouragement which you have given us to carry on with these charitable efforts. On that note, the Foundation will be hosting its seventh charity golf tournament on 30 September 2017. We successfully raised RM 907,000 last year and we hope supporters will donate generously once again in support of the work that we do.

We remain steadfast in our mission to create loving and caring neighbourhoods. We look forward to strengthened partnerships for many more years to come.

Overview of

The uniqueness of the MyKasih programme compared to other non-profit organisations doing food aid is in the former’s technological edge in driving welfare distribution. The MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’ food aid programme and the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ student bursary scheme run on an efficient cashless payment system developed by ePetrol Services Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Dialog Group Berhad. The system uses the chip technology of the Malaysian identity card, the MyKad, to disburse welfare aid to target beneficiaries.

Revolutionising charity through a

systemised welfare management solution using

MyKad

How MyKasih Works

Donors or welfare agencies select preferred locations to adopt families under the MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’ food aid programme for a minimum of one year.

Welfare agencies and/or non-governmental organisations help identify and select needy families based on criteria to assess the eligibility of potential recipients, such as monthly combined household income, number of household members, age, etc. Application Forms for potential beneficiaries are submitted to MyKasih Foundation for Donor’s approval.

Details of approved applications are keyed into the MyKasih Online Portal, where each family is required to nominate a recipient.

RM 40 is deposited into the recipient’s MyKad account twice a month.

Recipients shop for essential goods from ten different product categories such as rice, noodles, bread, biscuits, eggs, seasoning, flour, cooking oil, canned food and beverages.

Recipients use their MyKad to pay with a limit of RM 80 a month. To guard against abuse, a unique bar-code scanning process at the point-of-sale ensures that only approved selected basic food items are purchased. To activate the payment transaction using the MyKad, recipients are required to key in a personalised 6-digit PIN. Upon a successful transaction, a receipt is generated which informs the recipient of his/her available balance for the next purchase.

ePetrol then administers the payments and sales reconciliation between MyKasih Foundation and the participating retail partner.

Established in April 2009, MyKasih Foundation is a charity organisation founded by Dialog Group’s Executive ChairmanTan Sri Dr. Ngau Boon Keat and his wife Puan Sri Jean Ngau, to help low-income families through food aid and education regardless of race, religion or descent.

MyKasih ‘Love My School’ Bursary Programme

Donors select schools which they would like to adopt under the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ Bursary Programme.

Selected schools will identify underprivileged students using qualitative and quantitative criteria to assess their eligibility. Application Forms for potential beneficiaries are submitted to MyKasih Foundation for Donor’s approval.

An account will be opened against selected students’ MyKad into which a spending allowance of RM 30-40 will be deposited twice a month.

Students shop for books and stationary items at the school bookstore or food items at the school canteen, and pay for their purchases using the MyKasih student smartcard.

All students under the bursary programme are subjected to mid-term reviews of their academic progress in order to stay on the programme.

Similarly, student beneficiaries under the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ student bursary programme use their MyKasih student smartcard to buy food and drinks at the school canteen, as well as books and stationery at the school bookshop.

MyKasih believes that if the families’ basic needs can be met, the children can complete proper education and hence have the opportunity of stepping out of poverty through better job employment.

MyKasih relies entirely on donations from the public and corporate bodies, which are tax exempted, to help fund the above welfare programmes for the underprivileged. For more information on how to help, visit www.mykasih.com.my.

6 | MyKasih News Issue #19

MyKasih started with a pilot project involving 25 families back in December 2008 and to-date, it has reached out to more than 230,000 families in over 400 locations all over Malaysia, out of which, 11,000 are primary and secondary student beneficiaries under the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ bursary scheme. MyKasih has channelled almost RM 180 million to targeted beneficiaries throughout the country via the MyKasih cashless payment system.

The scope of the MyKasih system has expanded beyond food aid and student bursaries to include cashless payments for public transportation, fuel, medical treatments and utility bills. Essentially, the MyKad account becomes the single main account to which low-income households can use to access multiple welfare products or services.

The Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Johor and Sarawak State Governments, as well as Lembaga Zakat Selangor and Majlis Agama Islam Melaka, have been using the innovative MyKasih system for their respective welfare programmes for the underprivileged.

Love My NeighbourhoodFood Aid Programme

Food aid is the first step taken to engage with our targeted communities. Based on the needs and readiness of the community, the food aid is often followed by the Love My School bursary programme and other empowerment programmes.

MyKasih Foundation does not give out assistance to the low-income households on an ad-hoc basis. Instead, we make a long-term commitment to empower the people we help.

Food aid recipients receive a bimonthly allowance which they draw upon using their MyKad or MyKasih smartcard at participating retail outlets. They are able to choose different brands of essential food items from an approved list of ten product categories.

To guard against abuse, a unique barcode-scanning process at the point-of-sale ensures that only approved items are purchased. Recipients key in their 6-digit PIN when paying with their MyKad or MyKasih Smartcard.

Transparency and accountability are traits our donors value when deciding to sponsor our projects. Helping low-income families meet their basic needs will lead to a better environment for everyone.

partnership with MyKasih Foundation which began in 2009, a contribution of RM 50,000 was made to support 50 families in Kelantan through the MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’ food aid programme for one year.

The cheque presentation was held on 30 March 2017 in conjunction with the opening of Giant’s second hypermarket in Kelantan, Giant Tunjung Mall, which was officiated by GCH Retail (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer, Pierre Olivier Deplanck.

Giant, as a donor partner, has contributed RM 1.56 million to-date to MyKasih Foundation. These funds have gone to support more than 500 families with monthly food aid and 1,200 students in 20 primary schools with bursaries to afford their daily meals and learning necessities in school.

Deplanck said, “We are pleased to be able to give back to the community wherever we operate. Given

the focus of our corporate responsibility programme to reach out to lower-income households, we have chosen to partner with MyKasih Foundation as they have an innovative way of delivering assistance effectively to those in need.”

“Today, eight years since our collaboration with MyKasih Foundation began, 76 Giant outlets nationwide, including

those in Sabah and Sarawak as well as the new Giant Tunjung Mall, serve beneficiaries on the cashless MyKasih food aid programme,” added Deplanck. MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat, thanked Giant for their long-standing support, both as a retail partner and a donor. He said, “We appreciate Giant’s

sensitivity towards the plight of economically-challenged households in communities where they operate and are deeply honoured to be able to serve as a partner in implementing their corporate responsibility programmes.”

“Giant is MyKasih’s pioneer retail partner and has been with us since the MyKasih ‘Love My Neighbourhood’ cashless food aid programme was launched in 2009, serving 50 families back then. It is encouraging to see the partnership grow to 76 outlets to-date,” said Tan Sri Dr Ngau.

The first charity golf tournament organised in 2011 in Glenmarie raised RM 394,720. The proceeds supported activities MyKasih ran with the community, such as food aid, children’s educational workshops, skills training, as well as health screening.

To-date, we have reached out to 230,000 families nationwide, an astonishing 23 times the number of families we assisted in 2011. This was made possible because of the generosity of our corporate partners, retailers and kind supporters.

The last two charity golf events in 2015 and 2016 raised RM 807,000 and RM 907,000 respectively through flight sponsorships and cash donations. The success of MyKasih’s charity golf events demonstrates donors’ belief in the programmes we deliver, which are aimed at improving the communities’ wellbeing through food aid, education and supplementary assistance programmes.

We are grateful for your continued support over the years. However, much more needs to be done. Sports with a social cause are a good blend. We hope you will join us at this upcoming charity golf event by sponsoring a flight or two. We would also appreciate in-kind contributions, such as sponsorship of prizes, to entice golf enthusiasts out there.

Your generous giving will support our efforts in assisting financially-burdened families meet their basic needs.

If you would like to sponsor a flight, donate cash, or contribute towards prizes, please write to [email protected].

otarians in 20 clubs under Rotary I n t e r n a t i o n a l District 3300

Malaysia are working hand-in-hand with MyKasih Foundation to bring the Rotary Kasih project into its third year.

Both Rotary and MyKasih have jointly committed RM 1.5 million on a matching fund basis for the 3 year Rotary Kasih project spanning 2015 to 2017, positively impacting 800 primary and secondary students in sixteen schools across five states in Peninsula Malaysia through the student adoption and life transformation programme.

Other than lessening the burden of financially-challenged families in educating and nourishing their children through the ‘Love My School’ programme,

the project aims to enhance the students’ learning abilities through values-based programmes, which include mentoring and coaching, as well as opportunities to participate in leadership seminars and motivation camps.

“The main goal of this programme is to develop the students into productive wholesome nation builders”, said the Rotary Kasih Committee Chairman, Dr Sen Gupta.

In thanking Rotary for their continued support, MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat said, “The Rotarians have been a wonderful community partner to work with since our Foundation’s inception in 2009, from helping us to identify eligible low-income families for food

aid support, to organising free health screening camps for the beneficiaries”.

“The dedication and care for the students’ wellbeing demonstrated by the Rotarians in the execution of this community service project is truly exemplary. We value the partnership and are so pleased to have Rotary as our

donor partner”, commented Tan Sri Dr Ngau on the Rotary Kasih collaboration. “We appreciate the synergy in the partnership and hope that the Rotary Kasih project can continue for many more years to come for the children’s benefit”, added Dr Sen Gupta.

Rotary Kasih enters third year of collaboration

he Samarahan Charity Golf Tournament, which will be held at the Samarahan Country Club in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak on 30 April 2017 aimes to raise RM 1 million for the Sarawak Rural Kids Education Fund.

Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister, YB Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the patron of the tournament, expressed an urgent need for financial assistance to be delivered to schools affected by the recent floods in Sarawak.

“The floods have caused a lot of disruption and inconvenience to many rural communities. We have recorded 112 schools that were affected, impacting about 10,000 students. And these students really suffer,” revealed YB Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah during a press conference held in Kuching on 30 March 2017.

Organizers of the tournament will be working with MyKasih Foundation to receive donations and distribute them to targeted schools and students affected by the floods.

“News of damage caused by the floods greatly alarmed us. Impoverished communities in rural Malaysia are the worst hit during such disasters. We need to come together during times of need to ensure that the children’s education is not disrupted,” said MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat.

Let’s talk about Orang Asli and education

The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.

Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat explains why we are putting Orang Asli’s education at the forefront, and why you should too.

rom Mahatma Gandhi to Bernie Sanders, our greatest leaders and thinkers from past to present have called on the privileged and those in comfort to give a thought to those less fortunate.

The Orang Asli community, one of the most vulnerable communities in Malaysia, has occupied our thoughts for some time.

We ventured out of our comfort zone of aiding urban communities and reached out to an Orang Asli settlement in Janda Baik, Pahang, in 2010. We did not know what is it like out there in rural areas, and we did not know if we would be well-received by the communities.

We learned about the needs from other Orang Asli communities, and so we moved on to reach out to the Mah Meri of Selangor, the Jahut and Jakun tribes of Pahang, the Orang Laut of Johor, and all the way to the Jahai community in Grik, Perak and the Penans in Sarawak. All communities welcomed us warmly and

appreciated our effort to extend a helping hand outside of the Klang Valley, and well beyond paved roads.

Orang Asli communities face a host of challenges, which differ from one village to the other. The only thing constant was their resolve not to remain a vulnerable community.

They see their way forward through education.

Successfully attaining education, we discovered, is not as straightforward for the Orang Asli. Geographical challenges (distance and challenging terrain) from their village to schools, adapting to new and foreign systems of learning, and affording school uniforms and textbooks are amongst the major hindrances Orang Asli children have to overcome in acquiring a wholesome education in school.

After adopting two primary Orang Asli schools, namely SK Bukit Lanjan in Damansara Perdana, Selangor, and SK Penderas in Kuala Krau, Pahang, and supporting three community-based

learning centers in the Pahang jungles of Ulu Tual, Sungai Ruai and Bertang, we found that even providing just a little financial assistance can go a long way in increasing school attendance and improving grades.

Teachers in Orang Asli schools attest that just having a company show interest in their school has given tremendous encouragement for the students, their parents and even the teachers! The kind gesture of rendering financial assistance further motivates teachers to do the best for the students.

My wife, Jean, launched the MyKasih Orang Asli Children’s Education Fund in 2015 and together with the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ student bursary programme, individual and corporate cirizens can give hope to Orang Asli communities for a better future, one school at a time.

So we appeal to you to invest in improving the lives of Orang Asli children through education.

ROARing with potential, MyKasih youth secures scholarship

The story of Joshua...

oshua and his family had a bright future ahead of them with his father working as a head chef in a prominent establishment in China. Their good fortune was however, short lived. When he was still in his elementary years, his

father had a stroke that paralyzed him from waist down. The debilitating condition was made worse when both his legs were amputated recently, as a result of diabetes. This left Joshua’s mother the sole breadwinner of the family. To supplement the family income, his oldest sister had to abandon plans for further education to get a job. Despite the adversity the Chong family faced, furthering his education remained top priority. When Hong Leong Foundation reached out to MyKasih to identify potential applicants from our database for the Reach Out and Rise (ROAR) scholarship, the collaboration proved fruitful. Joshua managed to secure a full scholarship from ROAR to pursue a diploma in Business Administration at SEGi University, which covers tuition fees, accommodation, food, as well as enrichment programmes organized by education NGO, SOLS 24/7.

Joshua maintains an impressive average of 3.6 CGPA for his diploma exams while working part-time at a café in Kota Damansara, earning between RM 300 - RM 400 a month. Upon

graduation in December 2017, Joshua hopes to complete his degree in Marketing at the same university and work towards becoming a professional marketer in the medical industry as he finds the knowledge of medicine to be very interesting. “Joshua’s story has deeply inspired us here in MyKasih Foundation to reach out to our beneficiaries and support them in their pursuit for higher education”, said Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat, MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder. In expressing gratitude towards Hong Leong Foundation, Tan Sri Dr Ngau added, “Hong Leong Foundation has set a great example of how we are able to extend help to deserving individuals. I hope that together, we will be able to double the reach to make higher education accessible for youths”. “Education is the most meaningful way we can empower our beneficiary families. That was the main reason behind the setting up of the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ bursary scheme for primary and secondary students. MyKasih Foundation is open to collaborating with other foundations or funding institutions to support MyKasih children and youths in their studies,” said Tan Sri Dr Ngau.

Mah Meri of Carey Island empowered through Mengecapi Aspirasi DiriHSBC Bank Malaysia and MyKasih Foundation team up with Lifeworks to deliver impactful income-generation programmes, making a difference in the lives of those ready to achieve their fullest potential.

7 Orang Asli whose livelihoods depend on agriculture and craft-making were

empowered through a four-month long ‘Mengecapi Aspirasi Diri’ or ‘MAD’ programme together with MyKasih Foundation.

The Mah Meri’s masked dance and intricately woven pandanus pouches are world renowned, bringing the craftsmen, women and dancers to countries such as Germany, Morroco, Turkey and France to perform and trade their crafts. Despite jet-setting around the world, back home in their village, most of them remain impoverished.

Recognizing this quandary, MyKasih Foundation reached out to HSBC Bank Malaysia to fund MyKasih’s tenth empowerment and income-generation programme with the main aim of empowering MyKasih participants to become self-aware, confident, financially and emotionally liberated. The modules cover basic financial management, marketing, effective problem-solving and decision-making, communication skills, and creating a positive self-image.

“The Pulau Carey Mah Meri community were recipients under the MyKasih food aid programme in 2014. We learnt about the financial

struggles they were facing due to irregular income they earned as farmers and craftsmen. We felt that we needed to do more than help them put food on the table”, said MyKasih Foundation Chairman and Co-founder, Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat.

The community was receptive to MyKasih’s entrepreneurship income-generation programme and embarked on the programme in December 2016 with funding support from HSBC Bank Malaysia.

The programme’s graduation ceremony took place on 25 March 2017 at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Bumbun, a primary school within the village where the participants have diligently attended eight coaching sessions over the past four months. Out of the 47 community members who registered for the programme, 20 graduated with excellence for full attendance and surpassing their income targets.

Maznah Unyan, head of women’s group Tompoq Topoh (‘First Weave’), shared that she has

learnt about long-term personal financial management and planning. She now recognises the true value of her self-worth and appreciates her position as a leader of the women artisan group, as well as a skilled weaver and performer (singing and playing traditional musical instruments) and a spokesperson for the community. She feels that she has become more dedicated in her life’s pursuits and has learned to be

appreciative of all that has happened in her life.

Lead Coach Sharmini Hensen from Lifeworks, MyKasih’s partner for the MAD programme, explained, “In the Money Magnet module, each participant

would need to set goals, and more specifically, an income target to be achieved by the end of the programme. Their determination and teamwork generated RM 32,830 within the four-month programme period, surpassing the income goal of RM 19,440 which they had set at the beginning of the programme”.

The graduation ceremony included a demonstration on weaving, a display of handicrafts for sale, and a few performances of traditional songs and dances, all of which are goods and services which are additional sources of income to the Mah Meri, but more importantly, for the younger generation remain strongly connected to their unique cultural identity.

HSBC Bank Malaysia has been a supportive donor partner to MyKasih Foundation since the latter’s early years of establishment.

“I attended the programme’s first briefing in December 2016 simply out of curiosity. After

attending a few sessions, I started feeling more confident and in control of my destiny. I am now

better able to manage my finances, and I feel more positive and happier than I did before,”

“I have learnt how to market my carvings better and can decide what designs are more

marketable than others. In fact, I had to buy a new wallet recently to put my money in!
