Pool Rules: I have had several people asking me recently about how to enforce pool rules. There is no police force or security force that will be able to enforce the pool rules. What it does take is adult behavior by those that use the pool and in some cases community involvement. The Code of Conduct for the neighborhood says that the residents can ask those that are not following pool rules to leave the pool. We would suggest that if residents at the pool observe behavior that is dangerous or that needs to be addressed, please do so in a group. If you need to speak to someone, if possible, see if you can get a fellow resident who agrees with you to speak to the offender with you. There was an incident of vandalism recently against someone who did ask underage children to leave the pool. A police report was filed and it could be unnecessarily ugly. There are several thoughts about this: 1. If you aren’t breaking pool rules, then you don’t give people the opportunity or need to address the issue.. The rules are the same for EVERYONE, regardless of whether or not we agree with some of those rules. Please comply with the rules. 2. If you do need to address behavior, please don’t do it by yourself. 3. If we do need to speak to someone, again, please remember that these are our neighbors, your neighbors. We need to respect each other. We don’t want to get From The Board…. Greetings Lakeline Neighbors! Thank you for taking a few minutes to read our new and informative newsletter. We hope that this newsletter adds value to this community by distributing information that is helpful to all! One of the first orders of business for this newsletter is to make everyone aware that we are going to be holding our annual HOA meeting during the second week of September. We hope that by holding the meeting after school starts in the fall, most residents will be home from vacations, and we should be able to have a much higher turn-out. All residents will be notified by mail, once a firm date is set. We really need as much participation from the community as possible. The pool is an amenity that is open for the whole community. It is paid for by dues paid to the H.O.A. and those funds are limited. We have had several acts of vandalism lately. Pool Parties:Our pool calendar for the summer is full. We are into weeks in

September if you are interested in booking a party. I was recently asked how far in advance reservations are taken. We open the pool season on April 1st and we start takingreservations on that day. No reservations are accepted prior to that date. Once the pool season is open, you can reserve for any open weekend at that time. It is on a first come/first served basis. Please enjoy the rest of the summer and enjoy your freedom and also respect the freedom of others to enjoy the pool.

Dining Divas Corner

The June choice for the Divas was a restaurant in South Austin, BJ’s. We had six of the Divas with us again this month, although a different group than last month. BJ’s received SIX out of Six Hair Tosses for Food!! We enjoyed the crispy chicken salad, meatloaf, eggrolls, and Picky Pam had a turkey sandwich (no tomato, of course). The menu offers a variety of choices from pizza to steaks and everything in between.

The menu reads like a book. BJ’s is also known as a Brew-house with a beer menu about

as long as their food menu. Since beer doesn’t come in a champagne glass the Divas did not partake…Although as Divas you know we have to complain…

They were out of many of their most popular food choices or “favorites”! On a Tuesday? This is not a Mom-n-Pop place, this is a large chain with locations in several states, they should know better.

* Please note the Divas are not compensated for their opinions!

FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DROWNING

For more information, check out our website at

www.colinshope.org

Drowning is the leadingcause of unintentional

injury-related deathin children ages 1-4

Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of unintentional injury-related death ages 1-14.

DROWNING WILL AFFECT YOUOR SOMEONE YOU KNOW

Most children are out of sight or missing for less than 5 minutes and usually in the presence of 1 or both parents.

NO ONE is “drown proof” – no matter their level of swimming ability.

Falls, entrapments, and injuries lead to drowning regardless of swimming level.

A majority of people overestimate their own and their child’s ability to swim, especially in a panic event.

5min

Drowning occurs in as little as 2 minutes.

Most children die who are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes.

Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes.

2min 4min 6min

Children who drown do not scream, splash, or struggle. They silently slip beneath the water, even with adults & lifeguards present.

DROWNING IS QUICK AND SILENT

DROWNING CAN STILL OCCUREVEN IF YOU KNOW HOW TO SWIM

The Davis cemetery is located in Leander, just a short drive down 2243. Why would you take your kids to a cemetery you ask? Well, this particular cemetery is the grave site for the Webster Wagon Train and with a little prep work you can turn this trip into an exciting historical discovery. In the cemetery is a Texas historical marker. I had the kids hunt for the marker and when they located it we sat down and I launched into the story. The kids were riveted and glanced around imagining the dreadful events that occurred near this spot so many years ago. We began with discussing the Comanche Indians and how they roamed these lands and about the many conflicts they had with the settlers. The Comanche had a habit of raiding settlements or wagon trains and carrying off captives. Some of these captives they adopted into their tribes. Near this site in June of 1839 a wagon train of approximately 17 people was headed out to settle in what is now Burnet County. The wagon train was led by John Webster. As they neared their destination they discovered a large Indian force located between the north and south forks of the San Gabriel River. Realizing the party was too small to fight the Indians, Webster turned the wagon train back in an attempt to reach safety.

The Comanche overtook the train at Brushy Creek. The settlers circled their wagons and prepared to defend themselves against the vast number of Indians. A battle ensued and all in the party were killed except for Mrs. Webster and her two children. Mrs. Webster and her four year old daughter were taken south near San Antonio where they were able to escape. Her thirteen year old son was held captive for two years before he was finally ransomed for release.

An account of the massacre as described by the Webster daughter can be found at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txburnet/WebsterMassacre. This site contains links to other Central Texas Histories. Another fantastic source is the book “The Captured: The true story of Indian abduction on the Texas frontier” by Scott Zesch. The book is fascinating reading and provides great background information for your trip to Davis Cemetery. A copy of the book is located in the Cedar Park library. Some of the content of the book is not suitable for young readers so it would be better for mom or dad to read the book and edit out some of the details.

The Davis cemetery is located on the north side of 2243, approximately 2 miles east of 183.

Britt’s Book Buzz: It’s Criminal!

THE ASSOCIATE BY JOHN GRISHAMI am a positive person and I feel bad about putting negativity

out there, especially in a book review. I must say, however, that The Associate by John Grisham was a terrible book. I hadn’t read anything by Grisham since The Firm and The Pelican Brief while in high school. At the time, they seemed like somewhat smart novels. I came across The Associate at Half Price Books and thought “why not?” Boy, has time changed the author—and not for the better. My mom put it best, “he has a formula to his books.” Meaning, he doesn’t put much thought into the books other than to get them on the bookshelves as quickly as possible. Do lawyers even read these books or find them even mildly entertaining?

In the book, a hotshot law student has two great job offers and a bright future, but a blackmailing expert team has found a skeleton in his closet and exploits it to the fullest in order to obtain highly confidential information. Only in the last 50 or so

pages does the law student finally realize that he should just come clean and face the issue. Wouldn’t a Yale law student know how to resolve the situation without having to work with the blackmailers? I have absolutely no law background, but I saw no evidence to even convict him!

Character development was poor and the book was loaded with cliché after cliché and stereotypes (i.e. the hot law student who dressed really great and showed off her perfect body to the enjoyment of her male colleagues). The ending was horrifically lazy and unfinished.

Looking at the bright side, I hope this review saved you a worthless read.

Feel free to comment on this review or your thoughts on the book or suggest a book for me to review on my blog at http://www.brittsbuzz.blogspot.com.
