News Letter - December 2017 HOSPITAL:
Third time this year, the performance crossed 1000 mark. BUT, due to elections of state assembly, the total numbers remained less than the same month of the previous year by almost 300.
On retina specialist has joined us temporarily for a month. This will fill the gap until Dr. Swapnil comes back in the middle of January. The workload on Dr. Priyanka will ease up to that extent.
Dr. Rohan performed an evisceration surgery on an elderly patient with ischaemic heart disease whose cardiac function is only 30%. Two Anaesthetists – Dr. Aravindbhai Patel and Dr. Upendrabhai Patel remained
present. The blood pressure also shoot up during surgery BUT we could manage all that. More than anything else, the patient had gone to Navsari and Mumbai and still the surgery was performed here in Mandvi.
One fine evening, one of our camp patients – a chronic alcohol addict, started shivering badly because he had not received his evening dose of alcohol. The staff tried to tell him to lie down on the bed in the ward
and the doctor suggested some medications for the same BUT the patient ran out of the hospital. 4-5 staff members were not able to hold him back. We requested one of the young relatives of another patient to
help us because this old man had come alone. He also tried to convince the patient BUT in vain. Finally, this relative brought alcohol and allowed him to take it – this had to be done twice, then the patient became
somewhat normal. We called his son immediately and requested him to take him back. This is not the first time that this has happened. BUT, once more this episode raises some genuine questions. Whether we
should continue to bring elderly patients for surgery without the relatives? The problem is – if we don’t bring them, the family members are in any case not going to take care of them and on the other hand, if any
untoward incident occurs, we will be answerable. Recently, one of the patients walked away from the hospital and the relative was sitting in the ward. After sometime, when the relative did not see the elderly
person, he went to the police and we had to tackle the police also. The other major question is as hospital and as doctors – how can we allow the patient to take alcohol while they are here? Some questions will
remain unanswered. We will continue to do our work with all the faith in ALMIGHTY.
Towards the end of the month, the workload has picked up as the election fever is over. We had to use Punamwadi once again for patients overnight as we did several times last year also.
NETRAJYOTI TRAINING CENTRE:
Dr. Kishan Prajapti from Ahmedabad has completed his short term phaco fellowship during the month.
Dr. Sonali Bhonsle has completed her two months fellowship in SICS from this month.
Dr. Khushboo Dhinga has completed her two months fellowship in Medical retina. Her SICS training starts from 1st January.
Students of new batch of vision technicians and ophthalmic nursing are performing well. The batch seems to have picked up basic skills nicely.
Diwali Ba optometry college students are making good progress. First internal exam was taken during the month. All of them have shown satisfactory performance. Eight staff members are also attending spoken
English class with these students regularly.
4 nurses from our selected four CHCs – Areth, Jhankhvav, Mangrol and Umarpada came down for one day training in diabetic retinopathy.
Pradeep Patel and Viral Tailor went to H. V. Desai Eye Hospital, Pune for one week each to understand their system of camp publicity.
Vishal Shah went to Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai for three weeks for Ocular Prosthesis making training. Milan Patel went to Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai for one month training in equipments maintenance.
WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES:
Sunita Vasava, Dipika Vasava and Jayshree Gamit went to Vadodara to attend one day workshop on “Better Patient Management and Supervision” organised by Indian Hospital Association, Vadodara.
Vipul Joshi and Chintan Shirohiya attended the optical dispensing workshop organised by Vision 2020 :Right to Sight India programme at Vittala Eye Institute, Bengaluru.
Dr. Sheetal, Dr. Rohan and Dr. Uday attended the second World Conference on Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery in Chennai. Dr. Uday chaired one session and had one presentation. Dr. Rohan and Dr. Uday
both co chaired one session. Dr. Rohan had one presentation as faculty and two free paper presentations.
Eye Camps:
In addition to the routine camps, Mr. Yatin Mistry was sent to Ahwa for a week long diagnostic eye camp organised by local NGO.
Satellite centres:
Perofrmance of Vyara centre went down during this month because of the elections.
Netrang satellite centre was not affected by election fever at all and recorded the highest performance of this year with 61 surgeries.
Uchchal vision centre was inaugurated by the local leader Shri Jitendrabhai Desai. Col. Dr. Deshpande sir could not come due to inspection for CPS course at their hospital. Many other local leaders were present. The
camp organised on the same day was quite successful. We examined 150+ patients and brought 34 patients for surgery. After that, regular OPD of approx.. 10 patients is being seen and 3 more surgeries have been
performed on patients referred from there. Even telemedicine has become functional at Uchchal.
Vivekanand Pragnya Chakshu Bhavan:
Two of our hostel inmates participated in the state level Khel Mahakumbh.
GENERAL:
December was a very eventful month.
The workload dropped to a considerable extent around election time.
Inspection for DNB programme took place during the month. Dr. Manjoo Reddy from St. John’s medical college, Bengaluru came for the inspection. We have fulfilled all the requirements to the best of our capacity.
We are quite hopeful about getting a favourable response from the national board.
Inspection for renewal of our ISO certification also took place during the month. Shri Rushangbhai Sheth moved around the hospital in different departments and gave a couple of useful suggestions also. He
informed us that the system of ISO certification is undergoing a major change from next year and we will have to start the process in May 2018 for the same.
Inspection for Co operative society of staff members also took place during this month and we have received the registration towards the end of the month. It took us two and a half years to get there. Now, we will
be able to start various activities under the society for the benefit of its members.
A demonstration of fire safety procedures was organised on 30th Dec. with the help of fire department of KAPS. Their officers conducted an oral instruction session followed by practical demonstration. Staff
members got good useful information. This was the third time, we arranged similar activity.
We have started distribution of Vitamin A and “Sukhdi” to the under 6 children of migrant population who come here for working in sugarcane fields. These kids are really deserving ones and whatever we can do for
them should be done.
