ON PAPER—or at least on theblockchain—Satoshi Nakamoto is one of the richest

peopleon theplanet. Bitcoin isa semi-anonymous currency andMrNakamoto is a

pseudonymousperson,so it ishardto besure;butheisgenerallyreckonedtoown

around1.1m bitcoin, oraround5% of thetotal number thatwill ever exist. When

bitcoinhititspeakofover$19,000,thatmadehimwortharound$20bn.

ButMrNakamoto,thoughactivelyinvolvedwithhisbrainchildinitsearlyhistory,has

beensilent since2011. Anarmyofamateurdetectiveshasbeentryingtoworkout

whohereallyis, butthereisfrustratinglylittletogoon.Whiledevelopingbitcoinhe

claimedto bemale, inhis late30s andliving inJapan, buteventhat informationis

suspect.ThereareindicationsthathemayhavelivedinanAmericantimezone,but

hisEnglishoccasionallycontainsBritishidioms. Someofhisgoldbug-likecomments

about central banks that “debase the currency”and the evils of fractional-reserve
