Course Description Since a deep understanding of arithmetic is required to prepare students for algebra, calculators are not permitted. Topics include signed numbers, arithmetic and algebraic fractions, exponents, polynomials, linear equations, and an introduction to graphing. Prerequisite: MTH 091 with a grade of “C” or above or qualifying score on the Placement Test.

Required Texts and Materials Text - Prealgebra, Tom Carson, 4th edition, Pearson, 2013.Other Materials - 3-ring binder (recommended), or “math-only” folder/notebook

- Pencils (recommended) or pens

Calculators are NOT permitted in this course.

Student Learning OutcomesAt the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:

A. perform basic operations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.B. use the properties of the real numbers in arithmetic and algebra.C. demonstrate proficiency in introductory algebra including fundamental operations on signed

numbers, polynomial operations, and exponents.D. simplify ratios and use proportions to solve problems.E. solve linear equations.F. plot points in the coordinate plane.

Our mission is to Serve our Students and the Community through lifelong learning. 1

G. apply study skills to mathematics.

Attendance / Participation / Active Pursuit of the Course Attendance - Attendance at every class meeting is absolutely essential. Do not miss class

casually at the beginning of the semester. If an emergency arises and you must miss a class, you are responsible for finding out what you missed that day.

Participation Points - One participation point will be awarded each day (for a total of 45 semester points). Attendance for the full class-period is required to be awarded each point. Coming late to class and/or leaving early will each result in a half-point deduction.

Active Pursuit - Active pursuit of the course is considered to be regular attendance and completion of graded assignments and exams.

Homework / Late Work / Make-up Assignments Homework - In order to be successful in any math class, it is absolutely necessary to do

homework completely and in a timely manner. Weekly homework is due at the beginning of the class period (usually on Mondays). Papers must have your full name clearly written at the top, spiral frizzies must be removed, and the assignment must be stapled. Any homework not adhering to the above guidelines will result in an appropriate point deduction for the assignment. Attendance the day of distribution and adhering to deadlines are required for full points to be awarded on all in-class work. Chapter reviews will be distributed on the day prior to the test and collected on the day of the exam.

Late Work - LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED! The lowest three homework scores will be dropped, and the lowest five in-class work (practice problem) scores will be dropped. Chapter reviews and test scores WILL NOT be dropped.

Make-Up Assignments - No make-up homework or in-class assignments will be accepted. A maximum of one make-up exam will be allowed per student per semester. (All make-up exams will have a 10% penalty.) The final exam is mandatory; non-compliance will result in automatic failure.

Academic Integrity Cheating and/or plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated. Cheating includes (but is not limited to): copying another student’s work, calculator usage on an assignment, mathematical assistance from a cell phone or other electronic device, or any other way you avoid actually doing the math! All work must be shown on every graded assignment for full-credit to be awarded. Evidence of cheating will result in a grade of zero for the assignment, and, at the discretion of the instructor, a failing grade for the course.

Official WithdrawalIf you decide to stop pursuing completion of this or any class, you must obtain the required signatures and officially withdraw (in person) prior to Monday April 27th.  Failure to do so will result in a failing grade on your SSC transcript.

Student Conduct / Classroom Etiquette Respect for one another and classroom decorum will be maintained at all times. Students are expected to adhere to SSC’s code of conduct regarding both academics and behavior. The following policies will be consistently enforced to ensure that every student receives the instructional time and atmosphere that he/she deserves.

1. Students who come late to class pose a distraction to the rest of the class. Therefore, you may enter the room before class is scheduled to begin. You may not leave the classroom during lecture for any reason other than an emergency. If such an emergency occurs, collect your belongings and leave the room quietly.

Our mission is to Serve our Students and the Community through lifelong learning. 2

Page 3: Reading Assignments: …  · Web viewmaximum of one make-up exam. will be allowed per student per semester. (All make-up exams will have a 10% penalty.) The final exam is mandatory;

2. Cell phones must be silenced or turned off during class. Texting and/or leaving the room to answer a phone is disruptive to the entire class. Absolutely no phone calls are to be answered in class. If the cell phone becomes a problem, it us up to the instructor’s discretion to turn it off and place it on the front desk for the remainder of the class, or ask the student to leave for the remainder of the period.

3. All tests have a time limit. Exceptions will not be made for students who arrive late on test days.4. Keep all graded work. Grade reports will be available and updated periodically, and if a question

arises, it is your responsibility to produce the original document for verification.5. Cheating and/or plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated. 6. You may choose any seat you wish to occupy the classroom. However, if your choice leads to

any type of classroom disruption, then your seat may be assigned for the remainder of the term.7. Eating is a distraction to the entire class, and is not permitted in the classroom. You may bring a

covered drink.

GradingThere will be approximately twelve homework assignments totaling 120 points, group and individual class work totaling approximately 125 points, six chapter reviews totaling 60 points, six chapter tests totaling 600 points, a total of 45 participation points, and a comprehensive final exam worth 200 points.
