Write the word grazed on the board. Ask ss to raise their hands if they know what this word means. Most students will not know. Then write the words around the grazed to complete the sentence The cow grazed on the green grass. Ask students if they can guess what the word means based on the context. Most Ss will come up with eat.Ask specifically which 2 words helped them guess the meaning. Circle cow and grass and connect them with a line arching over the sentence. Explain that the most common relationship between a cow and grass is to eat, therefore we can guess that the word graze means eat. Also point out that it is a verb.Do the same process with stipulated. The director stipulated that the students must complete an application to attend the workshop. Here the key words are director, students, and must. Again talk about the relationship between these words and the part of speech.
