Apart from practical reasons of easing passage through the nave to receive Holy Communion, care for the appearance of the lower step of the sanctuary, and allowing use of the front seats for any who need easier access forward, the railings are a powerful reminder of the Great Mystery we worship at Mass - that the Son of God has emerged from the sanctuary of heaven in the heart of the Trinity to come to meet us, bridging the infinite distance, becoming the sacrifice of atonement for us, and giving his own Self to us in the sacrament of the altar at Holy Communion. The time of Advent/Christmas seems especially fitting to be reminded through liturgical architecture of this wondrous mystery of faith. We offer our heartfelt thanks to Meade Murphy and his sons for their very fine work. in Christ, Fr Scot Anthony Armstrong Working Bee In order to have Mary Immaculate Church ready for Christmas, a cleaning working bee will be held immediately after the 8.15am Saturday morning Mass on December 15th. Hampers will be delivered to the families with children on 18 December and others from 20 December. Mary Immaculate Conference SVDP - Christmas 2018

The theme of the Queensland Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP) 2018 Christmas Appeal is -

CHRISTMAS WITHOUT JOY IS NO CHRISTMAS AT ALL.

The Mary Immaculate Conference of the SVDP will launch the 2018 Christmas Appeal at the weekend Masses on 1- 2 December through the distribution of appeal envelopes on the pews. We are very fortunate each year to be able to make this appeal and the Conference very much appreciates the support of Father Scot Armstrong - our Parish

Priest, Father Andrew Wise and Father Adrian Sharp, and your ongoing support for this ministry.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas you can choose to return the addressed envelopes via the collection plates; to a SVDP volunteer at the back of the church at the end of mass; or mail it to the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Reflection What we know of the virtues of the saints is the least part of them. St Philip Neri

Virtues and Vices continued: Pride and Its Opposite Virtue-Humility. Pride is the most dangerous passion and the mother of all sins. It is idolatrous self-deification, whereby a person exalts self over others and puts oneself in the place of God. St Augustine taught that pride is the source of all evil, and that in order to overcome all other sins, one must rid oneself of the root cause - pride. "[T]hat the cause of all iniquities might be cured, namely, pride, the Son of God came down and was made low." The proud do not see their own sins, find it difficult to forgive and to seek forgiveness, and have trouble relenting. The proud person rejects authority, flares up in anger, holds grudges, envies people their successes, and deceitfully seeks to take control. They consider themselves to be the main cause of their achievements, rather than God. To train oneself in humility, on the other hand, opens a person towards God and neighbour, standing before the face of God in truth and receiving a transfiguring and

liberating power. "Humility is the strongest palisade, an immovable wall, an impenetrable fortress, inaccessible to all attacks, Through it, God, the One who loves mankind, pours out on us his plentiful gifts." (St John Chrysostom)

Christ the King - Year B: 24th/25th November, 2018

MASS READINGS

First Reading: Daniel 7:13-14

I gazed into the visions of the night. And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man. He came to the one of great age and was led into his presence. On him was conferred sovereignty, glory and kingship, and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants. His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty which shall never pass away, nor will his empire be destroyed.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 92 (Said by all)

The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed; the Lord has robed himself with might, he has girded himself with power.

The world you made firm, not to be moved; your throne has stood firm from of old. From all eternity, O Lord, you are.

Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house, O Lord, until the end of time.

Second Reading: Apocalypse 1:5-8

Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the first-born from the dead, the ruler of the king of the earth. He loves us and has washed away our sins with his blood, and made us a line of kings, priests to serve his God and Father; to him, then, be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen. It is he who is coming on the clouds; everyone will see him, even those who pierced him, and all the races of the earth will mourn over him. This is the truth. Amen. `I am the Alpha and the Omega' says the Lord God, who is, who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed is he who inherits the kingdom of David our Father; blessed is he who

comes in the name of the Lord. Alleluia!

Gospel: John 8:33-37

Pilate asked Jesus, `Are you the king of the Jews? 'Jesus replied, `Do you ask me this of your own accord, or have others spoken to you about me?

Pilate answered, `Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?' Jesus replied, `Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. But my kingdom is not of this kind.'

`So you are a king then?' said Pilate. `It is you who say it' answered Jesus. `Yes, I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.'
