Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

Last Thursday, October 15th marked the end of the jubilee to celebrate the five-hundredth anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila. She is an exceptional woman, a true reformer of the Church and a towering figure of the arts and culture because of her literary production.

Her life teaches us that authentic reform in the Church is the product of personal holiness. Her life also shows that answering all the demands Christ makes on our lives leads to a development of all our potentialities to the fullest possible extent. When we direct our best efforts to live out the Gospel we find God who is Goodness, Truth and Beauty itself and human nature created in the image and likeness of God shines in us with all its splendor.

On account of the Jubilee, Pope Francis pointed out the need to “to give thanks to God for the gift of this great woman” and reminded us that her books “along with her daughters in the numerous Carmelite convents scattered throughout the world, continue to tell us who and how Mother Teresa was and what she can teach us men and women of todayAt the school of the saintly traveller, we learn how to be pilgrims. The image of a path can very well summarize the lesson of her life and her work. Teresa understood life as a way of perfection, along which God leads man, from task to task, up to Him and, at the same time, puts him on a journey toward mankind. Along which paths does the Lord wish to lead us, following in the footsteps of St Teresa who takes us by the hand? I would like to recall four that do me much good: those of joy, of prayer, of fraternity and of time itself.

Teresa of Jesus asks her Sisters to “go cheerfully about whatever services you are ordered to do”. True holiness is a joy, for “an unhappy saint is a pitiful saint”. Saints, before being courageous heroes, are the fruit of God’s grace to mankind. Every saint shows us a feature of the multifaceted face of God. In St Teresa we contemplate God, who, being the “sovereign Lord, of majesty supreme”, reveals himself close and a companion and feels joy conversing with men: God becomes joyful with us. And feeling his love, a contagious and unconcealable joy was born in the Saint that she radiated around her. This joy is a journey that must be followed throughout life. It is not instantaneous, superficial, tumultuous. It must already be sought by “at the beginning”. Express the inner joy of the soul, it is humble and “modest”. It is not reached by an easy shortcut that bypasses sacrifice, suf-fering or the cross, but is found by enduring labor and pain, looking to the Crucifix and seeking the Risen One. For this reason St Teresa’s joy is neither selfish nor self-referential. Like that of heaven, it consists in the “joy in the rejoicings of all”, placing oneself at the service of others with unselfish love. As she told one of her monasteries in difficulty, the Saint would also tell us today, especially the young: “Do not stop going cheerfully about!”. The Gospel is not a bag of lead which one drags arduously, but a font of joy which fills the heart with God and impels it to serve one’s brothers!

The Saint also travelled the path of prayer, which she beautifully defined as “being on terms of friendship with God, frequently conversing in secret with Him who, we know, loves us”. When times are “difficult”, “the friends of God should be strong” in or-der to support the weak. To pray is not a means of escape, nor even to place oneself in a bubble or to isolate oneself, but to go forward in a friendship; and the more this friendship grows, the more one comes into contact with the Lord, the “true Friend” and faithful “companion” on the journey, with whom “everything can be borne”, because, always, “He helps, He strengthens, He never fails”. In order to pray, “it is not so essential to think much as to love much”, in turning one’s eyes in order to look at those who do not fail to look lovingly at us and to patiently support us. God is able to lead souls to himself through many roads, but prayer is “a safe way”. Leaving it means getting lost…

The holy writer and master of prayer was, at the same time, Foundress and missionary on the streets of Spain. Her mystic ex-perience did not separate her from the world nor from the concerns of the people. On the contrary, it gave her new impetus and courage for daily work and duties, because “the Lord goes along with you” even “amidst the pots and pans”. She experienced the difficulties of her time — which was so complicated — without giving in to the temptation to bitter complaining, but rather, accepting it in faith as an opportunity to take a step forward on the journey. For “at all times God is ever ready to bestow good favors upon those who serve him in earnest”. Today Teresa tells us: pray more in order to truly understand what is happening around you and thus to act better. Prayer conquers pessimism and generates good initiatives. This is Teresian realism, which requires work instead of emotions, and love instead of dreams; the realism of humble love in the face of anxious asceticism! At times the Saint shortens her pleasant letters saying: “We are on the path”, to express the urgency of continuing the task begun until the end. When the world is aflame, one cannot waste time on affairs of little importance. If only everyone were infected by this holy haste to go out to journey along the paths of our time, with the Gospel in hand and the Spirit in the heart!“It is time to walk!”. These were the words St Teresa of Ávila said shortly before her death, which summarize her life… “It is time to walk”, to set out on the paths of joy, of prayer, of fraternity, of time lived as grace! Let us be taken by the hand of St Teresa as we go through the journey of life. May her footsteps always lead us to Jesus.”

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

El pasado jueves 15 de octubre culminó el jubileo por el quinto centenario del nacimiento de Sta. Teresa de Ávila. Se trata de una mujer excepcional, una auténtica reformadora de la Iglesia y una figura señera de la cultura universal por su obra literaria. Su vida nos enseña que la auténtica reforma de la Iglesia es obra de la santidad personal y que cuando se vive el Evangelio integralmente dando respuesta a las exigencias de Cristo con toda nuestra vida, todas nuestras potencias se desarrollan en plenitud, porque cuando nos esforzamos por vivir el Evangelio encontramos a Dios que es el Bien, la Verdad y la Belleza misma y brilla en nosotros en todo su esplendor la naturaleza humana creada a imagen y semejanza de Dios.El Papa Francisco destacaba, a raíz del jubileo que es necesario “dar gracias a Dios por el don de esta gran mujer” y recordaba que sus libros, “junto con sus hijas en los numerosos Carmelos esparcidos por el mundo, nos siguen diciendo quién y cómo fue la Madre Teresa y qué puede enseñarnos a los hombres y mujeres de hoy.

En la escuela de la santa andariega aprendemos a ser peregrinos. La imagen del camino puede sintetizar muy bien la lección de su vida y de su obra. Ella entendió su vida como camino de perfección por el que Dios conduce al hombre, morada tras morada, hasta Él y, al mismo tiempo, lo pone en marcha hacia los hombres. ¿Por qué caminos quiere llevarnos el Señor tras las huellas y de la mano de santa Teresa? Quisiera recordar cuatro que me hacen mucho bien: el camino de la alegría, de la oración, de la fraternidad y del propio tiempo.

Teresa de Jesús invita a sus monjas a «andar alegres sirviendo». La verdadera santidad es alegría, porque “un santo triste es un triste santo”. Los santos, antes que héroes esforzados, son fruto de la gracia de Dios a los hombres. Cada santo nos mani-fiesta un rasgo del multiforme rostro de Dios. En santa Teresa contemplamos al Dios que, siendo «soberana Majestad, eterna Sabiduría», se revela cercano y compañero, que tiene sus delicias en conversar con los hombres: Dios se alegra con nosotros. Y, de sentir su amor, le nacía a la Santa una alegría contagiosa que no podía disimular y que transmitía a su alrededor. Esta alegría es un camino que hay que andar toda la vida. No es instantánea, superficial, bullanguera. Hay que procurarla ya «a los principios». Expresa el gozo interior del alma, es humilde y «modesta». No se alcanza por el atajo fácil que evita la renuncia, el sufrimiento o la cruz, sino que se encuentra padeciendo trabajos y dolores, mirando al Crucificado y buscando al Resucitado. De ahí que la alegría de santa Teresa no sea egoísta ni autorreferencial. Como la del cielo, consiste en «alegrarse que se alegren todos», poniéndose al servicio de los demás con amor desinteresado. Al igual que a uno de sus monasterios en dificultades, la Santa nos dice también hoy a nosotros, especialmente a los jóvenes: «¡No dejen de andar alegres!». ¡El Evangelio no es una bolsa de plomo que se arrastra pesadamente, sino una fuente de gozo que llena de Dios el corazón y lo impulsa a servir a los hermanos!

La Santa transitó también el camino de la oración, que definió bellamente como un «tratar de amistad estando muchas veces a solas con quien sabemos nos ama». Cuando los tiempos son “recios”, son necesarios «amigos fuertes de Dios» para sostener a los flojos. Rezar no es una forma de huir, tampoco de meterse en una burbuja, ni de aislarse, sino de avanzar en una amis-tad que tanto más crece cuanto más se trata al Señor, «amigo verdadero» y «compañero» fiel de viaje, con quien «todo se puede sufrir», pues siempre «ayuda, da esfuerzo y nunca falta». Para orar «no está la cosa en pensar mucho sino en amar mucho», en volver los ojos para mirar a quien no deja de mirarnos amorosamente y sufrirnos pacientemente. Por muchos caminos puede Dios conducir las almas hacia sí, pero la oración es el «camino seguro». Dejarla es perderse...

La santa escritora y maestra de oración fue al mismo tiempo fundadora y misionera por los caminos de España. Su experiencia mística no la separó del mundo ni de las preocupaciones de la gente. Al contrario, le dio nuevo impulso y coraje para la acción y los deberes de cada día, porque también «entre los pucheros anda el Señor». Ella vivió las dificultades de su tiempo –tan com-plicado– sin ceder a la tentación del lamento amargo, sino más bien aceptándolas en la fe como una oportunidad para dar un paso más en el camino. Y es que, «para hacer Dios grandes mercedes a quien de veras le sirve, siempre es tiempo». Hoy Teresa nos dice: Reza más para comprender bien lo que pasa a tu alrededor y así actuar mejor. La oración vence el pesimismo y genera buenas iniciativas. ¡Éste es el realismo teresiano, que exige obras en lugar de emociones, y amor en vez de ensueños, el realismo del amor humilde frente a un ascetismo afanoso! Algunas veces la Santa abrevia sus sabrosas cartas diciendo: «Estamos de camino», como expresión de la urgencia por continuar hasta el fin con la tarea comenzada. Cuando arde el mundo, no se puede perder el tiempo en negocios de poca importancia. ¡Ojalá contagie a todos esta santa prisa por salir a recorrer los caminos de nuestro propio tiempo, con el Evangelio en la mano y el Espíritu en el corazón!

«¡Ya es tiempo de caminar!». Estas palabras de santa Teresa de Ávila a punto de morir son la síntesis de su vida…Ya es tiempo de caminar, andando por los caminos de la alegría, de la oración, de la fraternidad, del tiempo vivido como gracia! Recorramos los caminos de la vida de la mano de santa Teresa. Sus huellas nos conducen siempre a Jesús.”
