40 DAYS OF FRANCIS Day 34

Pope Francis quote of the week: “To encounter the living God it is necessary to tenderly kiss Jesus' wounds in our hungry, poor, sick and incarcerated brothers and sisters.” Knot of the week: Nearly 22,000 offenders are serving sentences in New Jersey prisons. This week as part of 40 Days of Francis, the time of preparation in the Diocese of Camden for the visit of Pope Francis to Philadelphia, there will be open houses at all of Catholic Charities’ centers throughout South Jersey. Come learn more about the work being done in the name of our Catholic community in South Jersey to help untie the knots of poverty in our region. Remember to take one of the “knots” with you after Mass. Catholic Charities’ open house for Camden County will be held in Camden on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. (1845 Haddon Ave., Camden, NJ 08103).

A Prayer for the World Meeting of Families

God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church.

May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.

May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer to always seek your truth and live in your love.

Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Pray for us!

DIOCESE OF CAMDEN Office of Child & Youth Protection

“We can be sure that we love God’s children when

we love God and do what he has commanded.” 1 John 5:2

The Office of Child and Youth Protection is announcing CAP (Child Assault Prevention) sessions. CAP is the safe environment training program for adults who have regular contact with minors. Attendance is required in order to comply with the USCCB’s Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The policy of the Diocese of Camden is that adults will attend CAP once every five years. CAP 1 teaches attendees to recognize child abuse and neglect and how to report to the proper authorities. Adults are taught that children have the right to be safe, strong and free. CAP 1 is for new volunteers and employees.

CAP 2 is called No More Bullies, No More Victims and is a workshop addressing bullying awareness and bullying prevention. Cyber-bullying is also presented. CAP 3 is called Cyber-Empowerment and is a workshop which promotes adults understanding of cyber activity of youth while teaching them realistic ways to help children keep their own rights and guard the rights of others in the cyber-sphere. Each presentation is 90 minutes.

Adults who are new employees or volunteers should attend CAP 1 before attending CAP 2 or CAP 3. After five years, adults have the option of attending CAP 1, 2 or 3 when they renew their CAP.

STEWARDSHIP

Stewardship Service “If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today

whom you will serve…As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (JOSHUA 24:15)

August 10, 2015

Dear Parish Nurse:

I hope this letter finds you well. I am asking for your help in the development of a very important new outreach program for our parish. As a vibrant faith community we are constantly exploring ways to help and serve each other. Over the years we have grown by helping each other in our faith journey through service ministries such as the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Knights of Columbus, Youth Ministry, Adult Faith Formation, Social Justice and Visiting the Sick and Homebound. In addition our Liturgical Ministries have also made an invaluable contribution to St Simon Stock Parish.

All of these ministries have one thing in common, parishioners were willing to prayerfully consider giving of themselves to consider sharing their gifts for the benefit of fellow parishioners. That is why I’m writing to you today. Our lay leadership, with support from the diocese has been asked to consider developing a parish nursing ministry. Such a ministry would serve the parish in a number of ways. In our diocese the practice of parish nursing is guided by the American Nurses’ Association Faith Community Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice (2005). Some of the roles of the parish nurse that are based on these guidelines are health counselor, health educator, referral agent, advocate, integrator of faith and health, and coordinator of volunteer services. Roles that a parish nurse assumes within a parish are influenced by the needs of the community and the expertise of the parish nurse.

Please know that I am not asking you to volunteer at this time, only to come to an informational meeting (which will be held in September) so that you can help us determine if a ministry is needed in our parish. If there is enough support from nurses like you, then we will together determine how to go forward.

Please take a moment to consider attending the informational meeting and reach out to me either by phone or email. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me as well. Thanks for your consideration in this important ministry.

Sincerely,

Deacon John Deacon John Rich [email protected] (856) 229-1273
