IntroductionAntConcisafreeware,multiplatformtoolforcarryingoutcorpuslinguisticsresearchanddatadrivenlearning.

It runs on any computer running Microsoft Windows (tested on Win 98/Me/2000/NT, XP, Vista, Win 7),

MacintoshOSX(testedon10.4.x,10.5.x,10.6.x),andLinux(testedonUbuntu10).ItisdevelopedinPerlusing

ActiveState'sPerlAppcompilertogenerateexecutablesforthedifferentoperatingsystems.

Installation

Windows

OnWindowssystems,simplydoubleclicktheAntConciconandthiswilllaunchtheprogram.Noinstallationis

necessary.

MacintoshOSX

OnMacintosh systems, first install and launch X11. X11 is a graphical toolkit that is availableon the disks

includedwiththecomputerorviatheApplewebsite.Next,doubleclickdoubleclicktheAntConciconandthis

willlaunchtheprogram.Noinstallationisnecessary.

Linux

OnLinuxsystems,changethepermissionstoallowAntConctoberunasanexecutablefile.Next,doubleclick

doubleclick

the

AntConcicon

and

this

will

launch

the

program.

No

installation

is

necessary.

OverviewofToolsAntConccontainsseventoolsthatcanbeaccessedeitherbyclickingontheir'tabs'inthetoolwindow,orusing

ConcordanceTool:

Thistoolshowssearchresultsina'KWIC'(KeyWordInContext)format.Thisallowsyoutoseehowwordsand

phrasesarecommonlyusedinacorpusoftexts.

ConcordancePlotTool

This

tool

shows

search

results

plotted

as

a

'barcode'

format.

This

allows

you

to

see

the

position

where

search

resultsappearintargettexts.

FileViewTool

Thistoolshowsthetextofindividualfiles.Thisallowsyoutoinvestigateinmoredetailtheresultsgeneratedin

othertoolsofAntConc.

Clusters(NGrams):

ThisClustersToolshowsclustersbasedonthesearchcondition.Ineffectitsummarizestheresultsgenerated

in theConcordanceToolorConcordancePlotTool.TheNGramsTool,on theotherhand, scans theentire

corpusfor'N'(e.g.1word,2words,)lengthclusters.Thisallowsyoutofindcommonexpressionsinacorpus.

Collocates:

This tool shows the collocates of a search term. This allows you to investigate nonsequential patterns in

language.

WordList:

Thistoolcountsallthewordsinthecorpusandpresentstheminanorderedlist.Thisallowsyoutoquicklyfind

whichwordsarethemostfrequentinacorpus.

KeywordList:

Thistoolshowsthewhichwordsareunusuallyfrequent(or infrequent) inthecorpus incomparisonwiththe

wordsinareferencecorpus.Thisallowsyoutoidentifycharacteristicwordsinthecorpus,forexample,aspart

ofagenreorESPstudy.

Thistool

shows

This

you

Toproduceasetofconcordancelinesoftext,youneedtoperformthefollowingactions:

1) Selectoneormorefilesforprocessingfromusingthe'OpenFile(s)...'or'OpenDir...'optionsinthe'File'

menu.Thelistofselectedfilesisshownintheleftframeofthemainwindow.

2) Enterasearchtermonwhichtobuildconcordancelinesintheentryboxontheleftofthebuttonbar.

3) Choose the number of text characters to be outputtedon either side of the search term, using the

increase anddecreasebuttonson the rightof thebuttonbarunder the "SearchWindow Size" title.

(defaultvalueis50characters)

4) Clickonthe'Start'buttontostarttheconcordancelinesresultsgeneration.Theconcordancegeneration

canbe

halted

at

any

time

by

clicking

on

the

'Stop'

button.

5) Selectatargetwordonwhichtorearrangetheconcordance lines,usingthebuttonstotherightofthe

buttonbar.0isthesearchword,1L,2L...arewordstotheleftofthetargetword,1R,2R..arewordsto

therightofthetargetword.Notethatthreelevelsofsortarepossible,withthesecondandthirdlevels

notactivatedwhenthesoftwareisfirstlaunched.

6) Clickonthe'Sort'buttontostartthesortingprocess.

7) Movethecursoroverthehighlightedsearchterminoneoftheconcordancelines.Thecursorwillchange

toasmallhandicon.Clickingonthehighlightedsearchterm,willallowtheusertoviewthesearchterm

hitasitappearsintheoriginalfileviatheFileViewTool(seebelow).

Notethatthetotalnumberofconcordancelinesgenerated(hits)isshowninthemiddleoftheAntConcbutton

window.Thisnumberwillflashwiththeword"FINISHED"whenprocessinghasbeencompleted,andwillflash

withtheword"NOHITS", ifnothitsaregeneratedforaparticularsearchterm.Inthiscase,theconcordance

linesviewwillnotbeupdated,andtheprevioussetofconcordancelineswillremainvisible.

Searchtermscanbespecifiedasbeing"words"(default)or"wordfragments"bychoosingthe"Word"search

termoption.Also,searchescanbeeithercase sensitiveorcase insensitive (default)bychoosing the"Case"

searchtermoption.Searchescanalsobemadeusingfullregularexpressionsbychoosingthe"Regex"option.

By clickingon the "Advanced Search"button,more complex searchesbecomepossible. The first advanced

searchoption istodefineasetofsearchterms,eitherbytypingthemoneper line,orby loading ina listof

searchtermsfromafile.Notethateachlinewillbetreatedasaseparatesearchterm.Thefeatureallowsthe

usertousealargesetofsearchtermswithouthavingtoretypethemeachtime.Thesecondadvancedsearch

For

example, to search for "student" where it appears at least three words to the left or right of the word

Anumberofmenupreferencesareavailablewiththistool.(Seebelow).

ConcordancePlotTool

Thistoolshowssearchresultsplottedasa'barcode'format.Thisallowsyoutoseethepositionwheresearch

resultsappearintargettexts.

GeneratingconcordanceplotscanbeachievedusingthesameactionsaswhenusingtheConcordanceTool.

However,theConcordancePlotTooloffersanalternativeviewofconcordancelines.Here,allthehitsforeach

fileareplotted inthe formofa 'barcode' indicating theposition inthe filewhere thehitoccurred.Theplot

providesaneasywaytoseewhichfilesincludethetargetsearchterm,andcanalsobeusedtoidentifywhere

the search term hits cluster together. An example of the use of the plot is in determining where specific

contentwordsappearinatechnicalpaper,orwhenacharacterappearsduringthecourseofanovelorplay.

Thenumberofhitsandlengthofeachtextisshowntotherightofthebarcodeplot,andtheplotitselfcanbe

enlargedorreducedinsizeusingthezoombuttons

If

ClustersTool

TheClustersToolshowsclustersbasedonthesearchcondition.Ineffectitsummarizestheresultsgeneratedin

theConcordanceToolorConcordancePlotTool.

Theclusterscanbeorderedeitherbyfrequencyorthestartorendoftheword.Theycanalsobeorderedby

theprobabilityof the firstword in theclusterpreceding the remainingwords.All listorderingscanalsobe

inverted.Also,ausercanselecttheminimumandmaximumlength(numberofwords)ineachcluster,andthe

minimumfrequencyofclustersdisplayed.Itisalsopossibletoselectifthesearchtermalwaysappearsonthe

leftorrightofthecluster.(Note:Inthecurrentversion,ifmorethanonewordisspecifiedasthesearchterm,

onlythefirstwordwillappearontheright,ifthe"SearchTermonRight"optionisselected.)

Toproduceaclusterlist,youneedtoperformthefollowingactions:

NGramsTool(partoftheClustersTool)

TheNGramsToolscanstheentirecorpusfor 'N'(e.g.1word,2words,)lengthclusters.Thisallowsyouto

findcommonexpressionsinacorpus.Forexample,ngramsofsize2forthesentence"thisisapen",are'this

is','isa'and'apen'.

AswiththeClustersTool,thengramscanbeorderedeitherbyfrequencyorthestartorendoftheword.They

canalsobeorderedbytheprobabilityofthefirstword intheclusterprecedingtheremainingwords.All list

CollocatesTool

This tool shows the collocates of a search term. This allows you to investigate nonsequential patterns in

language.

Thecollocatescanbeorderedeitherby frequency, frequencyon the leftorrightofthesearch term,orthe

startorendoftheword.Theycanalsobeorderedbythevalueofastatisticalmeasurebetweenthesearch

term and the collocate. The value measures how 'related' the search term and the collocate are. Current

possiblestatisticalmeasuresarelistedbelow.Alllistorderingscanalsobeinverted.Also,ausercanselectthe

spanofwordstotheleftandrightofthesearchterminwhichtofindcollocates,andtheminimumfrequency

ofcollocatesdisplayed.Ifonlyaonewordspanisrequired,forexample,toseewhichwordsappeardirectlyon

therightofthesearchterm,checkthe"Same"box,tokeeptheminimumandmaximumspansizethesame.

MENUOPTIONS

Menu options are divided into three groups, "File", "Global Settings" and "Tool Preferences". The options

available

in

each

group

will

be

described

below.

Optionshererelatetoreadingfiles intoAntConcandwriting filestotheharddiskcontainingdataofvarious

types.Therearealsooptionstoexportallcurrentsettingstoafile,andimportusersettingsfromafile.Ifauser

settings file becomes corrupted for any reason, simply restart the program or use the "Restore Default

Settings"optiontoreturntheprogramtoitsoriginalstate.

CategoriesherewillhaveaneffectonmultipletoolsinAntConc:

Inthe

File

Settings

category,

the

user

can

choose

to

display

the

full

path

of

afile

or

just

the

name.

The

usercanalsochoosetoshoworhideanytagsinthefile.Thetagboundariescanbespecified.

IntheTagSettingscategory,theusercanchoosetodisplayorhideanytagsthatarecontained inthe

corpusfiles.Iftagsaretobehidden,theopeningandclosingtagmarkersmustbespecified.Thedefault

is.

IntheWildcardSettingscategory,userscaneditthedefaultwildcardcharacterssothattheydonotclash

with a search entry. For example, the "or" wildcard default character (a 'pipe' character | ) can be

changedto

abackslash

/here.

IntheToken(Word)Definitioncategory,theusercanchoosewhichcharacters,numbersandsoonwill

definea"word".Forexample,insomecasesonlyletterswillbeconsideredwords,butatothertimes,in

mightbe

desirable

include

numbers,

the

word

definition.

AntConc

is

fully

Unicode

compliant,meaningthatitcanhandledatainanylanguage,includingallEuropeanlanguagesandAsian

languages.Forthisreason,thedefaultoptionstalkoflettersinthebroadestsense.Letters,forexample,

includeallJapanesecharacters,ifthatlanguageencodingisbeingused(seebelow).Itisalsopossiblefor

IntheColorSettingscategory,theusercaneditthecolorsusedtodisplayresultsandotherinformation.

IntheFontSettingscategory,theusercaneditthe fonttypes,sizes,andstylesusedtodisplayresults

AntConc is fully Unicode compliant, meaning that it can handle data in any language, including all

European languagesandAsian languages.The language (encoding)of thedatatobe readbyAntConc

shouldbe

specified

here.

For

example,

if

you

are

working

with

data

saved

in

aWestern

language,

it

will

usuallybeencoded in iso88591 (default).On theotherhand, Japanese textsareusuallyencoded in

SHIFTJIS.Byspecifyingthecorrectencoding,datafromalllanguagescanbeprocessedcorrectlywithin

AntConc.

Eachtool(withtheexceptionofConcordancePlotToolandFileViewTool)hasapreferencescategory,where

settingscanbefinetuned.Alltoolpreferencecategoriesallowtheusertoshoworhidethedifferentframesin

whichtheresultsaredisplayed.Forexample,theusecanchoosetohidetheframeshowingfilenamesinthe

ConcordanceTooldisplaywindow.Also,alltoolshavetheoptiontotreatalldataas lowercaseandusecase

whensorting. Ifresultsaredisplayedcasesensitively,words includingcapital letterswillappearhigherup in

thedisplay.

Inadditiontotheabove,thefollowingsettingscanbemade:

Insteadofarrangingresultsbywordstotheleftorrightofthesearchterm,itispossibletoarrangethe

resultsbyLETTERS to the leftor rightof the first letterof the search term.Thismakes itpossible to

search for spelling differences. The search term can also be chosen to be hidden in the KWIC lines,

allowinginstructorstoquizstudentsonpossiblewordstofitthegap.Anotheroptionistoaddtabspaces

aroundthehitintheKWICdisplay.Thismakesiteasiertoseethehitandalsoeaseslaterprocessingof

thedatainaspreadsheetsoftwareprogram.

wordlist.Whenthelemmalistfunctionisused,the'lemmawordform(s)'columnwillshowthewordsin

thecorpusassociatedwitheachlemma.

A lemma list canbe createdby specifying the 'lemma entry' followby '>' followedbyoneormore

'words'thatshouldbeassignedtothe lemmaseparatedbyoneofmorenontokens.Seetheexample

Thewordlistcanbegeneratedusingallwords,ora specific setofwords,or ignoringa certain setof

words(astoplist).Thisistermedthe"WordlistRange".Therangeofwordstobeused(orignored)can

beentereddirectlybytheuser,orcanbestoredinfileswhicharethenreadbyAntConcbypressingthe

'Open'button.Acombinationofwordsinafileandwordsdirectlyenteredbytheusercanalsobeused.

Inadditiontotheabovethefollowingsettingscanbemade:

Asdescribed in the sectionon theKeyword List Tool, to generate a keyword list, theuserneeds to

specifyareferencecorpus,andastatisticalmeasureof 'keyness'.Although,thedefaultoptionsforthe

'keyness' measure and threshold values are recommended, changes can be made in this menu. By

choosing the "ShowNegativeKeywords"option,words that areunusually INFREQUENT in the target

corpus comparedwith the reference corpuswillbedisplayed.Also,here you can choose touse raw

referencecorpusfile(s),orwordlist(s)thatcorrespondtoareferencecorpus.Inaddition,youcanswap

themainandreferencecorpora.

7. I have heard reports that AntConc on Macintosh OS X sometimes does not correctly display rare font
