    Story Mapping and SummarizingMaking story maps and summarizing what students have readcan be fun and interactive. These two skills help the reader geta bird’s-eye view of a story and its events.

    For visual learners who may benefit from writing the three mainstory elements—plot, characters, and setting—in different areasof the page, use the Mapa narrativo (“Story Map”).

    The Mapa narrativo (con detalles) (“Story Map with Details”) isa more specific guide for story description. Students organizestory elements in categories laid out in a list format. Thisorganizer asks students for specific details about a storythey’ve read; therefore, it also makes a wonderful brainstormingtool when students plan stories they’re writing.

    Students can use the more detailed Mapa narrativo to getclarity on the setting(s) of a story; the main character(s); theprimary conflict, problem, or situation and how it is resolved;and details relevant to the main idea of the story. (For more on

    main idea and details, see page 4.)

    Alternatively, the student can design an original story map thatincludes whatever literary elements seem important for thereading material. Other categories might include theme(s),character details, sequence of events, etc.

    Summarization is part of the standards and is a usefulcommunication skill. Though summarizing may seem simple, ittakes practice to be both general and accurate in describingevents.

    Early-level students can use pictures combined with words tosynopsize a story’s plot on the Storyboard . (The literaltranslation is “guión gráfico” ; however, the borrowed Englishterm “storyboard” is commonly used.) With equal emphasis ongraphic and written summarization, the Storyboard includes a

    place to draw four important scenes from the story and writedescriptive text beneath. Each piece of descriptive text can bea short sentence.

    Illustrate a scene, and describe it in words.

    Summarize the parts of a story in your own words.

    Describe the details that feed the main idea of a story.

    Draw/describe highlights of a character's life or your own.

    This organizer can also be a timeline that describes thehighlights of someone else's life, biografía, or one’s own lifeevents, autobiografía. (For more on biography andautobiography, see Character Analysis, page 5).

    Foto instantanea (“Snapshot”) also provides a place for readers to describe a story through words and drawings.Students can show one scene or event from the story, achapter, or a full plot summary. There is room for them to

    write a phrase, a sentence, or a short paragraph and,optionally, a list of describing words from the reading that gowith the scene. Using Resumen de la trama (“Plot Summary”),they practice writing paragraphs and recording information inchronological order.

    Often, story-mapping activities provide the makings of a roughdraft for a book report. By describing the parts of a story or each of its chapters on a graphic organizer, students gainincreased clarity about the meaning of the story and a better focus on its most important aspects. Plus, they practice writingparagraphs and recording information in chronological order.

    Main Idea and DetailsThe most important aspect of a story for a student tounderstand is its main idea. This can be the story’s mostimportant message or a very general description of the plot.Using Idea principal y detalles (“Main Idea and Details”), show students how the main idea of a story grows out of the detailssprinkled throughout its scenes.

    Discuss the story as a group and decide on its main idea. Havestudents help identify at least two details from the story that

    contribute to this main idea. For students who are able, havethem independently fill in additional details on their reproducibles.The main idea and each detail should be a short sentence.

    Describe a character from a story, putting the information indifferent sections.

    Make a character self-portrait with words and drawings.

    Make a statement and provide details that back it up.

    Brainstorm and record a story's ideas and themes.

    Afterward, come together and share the details. Discuss how the details fit in with the main idea of the story.

    Use this organizer to explore how any theme or statement canbe supported by details. As a follow-up activity, have eachstudent brainstorm a statement of fact or opinion and listdetails that back it up. This exercise helps with the readingcomprehension, critical thinking, and expository writing skillsthat they’ll need in the intermediate grades.

    In addition to a main idea or a message in a story, throughdiscussion students can discover many themes. Most often astory has more than one theme, and brainstorming is a great

    way to discover more themes. Record the themes on Teje latelaraña.

    Character Analysis

    Characters drive a story, especially in children’s literature.Details about each character, and particularly the maincharacter, often hold great relevance to the plot. For readersto understand a story and its meaning(s), they need tounderstand the characters and what motivates them.Character development serves a dual purpose of helping to tellthe story and making the characters interesting, believable,and relatable.

    Students can make a word portrait of a character thatincludes the character’s interests, strengths and weaknesses,family, friends, etc. using Retrato de personaje (“Character Portrait”). Then, students can make their own character self-portraits.

    Put a positive flip on this activity. Fill in a chain of events thathas a positive end result. For example, talk about how doinggood deeds has a domino effect in society.

    A standard reading comprehension strategy in English is theK-W-L chart. K-W-L stands for Know—Want to Know—Learn.In Spanish we call this Tabla S-Q-A, which stands for Lo que Sé—Lo que Queiro saber—Lo que Aprendí. Before reading abook or beginning a new chapter, discuss contentcomprehension goals. In reading nonfiction, what factualinformation does the reader want to obtain?

    For use with comprehending fiction, Tabla S-Q-A provides apause in which students can express what intrigues themabout the story, or perhaps a plot point that is confusing.

    The Tabla de predicciones can provide validation for astudent’s questions. It’s also a reminder of what studentslearned and a record of information they can compile in afollow-up writing activity.

    A story’s plot often turns on a problem, conflict, limitation, or misunderstanding, as discussed earlier. (See Story Mappingand Summarizing, page 3.) Camino cerrado (“Roadblock”) uses

    a common problem-solving metaphor. Students look at how wecan find one or more detours, or solutions, to bypass apersonal roadblock and reach a destination, or goal. Thisgraphic organizer makes a great story-analysis tool as well asa conflict-resolution skill builder for interpersonalcommunication.

    Students who are reading independently can keep track of books they’ve read using Bitácora de lectura (“Book Log”). Thisorganizer appears as a series of library reference cards toremind students how to use it. The cards are a good way toget an overview of students’ reading choices and to make sure

    they are pursuing a variety of books at an appropriate level of challenge.

    Map out how characters get around a problem.
