The New Look Fly-In-Fly-Out It brings a whole new meaning to commuting, or Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) worker, but this recipe for reworking your life and finances can be the difference between living to work, and working to live.

It is in effect, life changing. I did it 14 years ago.

As a independent public relations and pitch consultant living in Mosman Sydney, and already working a manic pace and schedule, I realised pretty quickly not only could I not afford to buy where I wanted to live, if I bought anything at all in Sydney it would mean working at that high level of pressure for the rest of my life, just to pay the bills.

My health precluded that happening, and so I started looking for property around 3 hours away from Sydney. I drove north as far as Port Stephens, and south as far as Nowra, looking to buy a home that suited my work and desired lifestyle, that would still allow for a day trip to the city to meet with clients as needed.

Taking a week’s break in October 2001 in Noosa, I was emailing a client, thinking, he doesn’t know I’m in Noosa, followed by the aha moment, I can do this from Noosa!

A few short minutes later I had tallied the travel time - 3 hours door-to-door (home to airport, wait, flight, train to city) - with someone else doing the driving.

Within 6 weeks I had made arrangements, rented an enormous house in Noosa Heads for a third of the rent I was paying in Sydney, and by Christmas, I was living in Noosa. And before I was 40 I owned two homes here for under $800,000.

it was audacious. And it worked. With improvements in internet and family friendly commitments from workplaces, the working remotely is not a pipe dream.

What’s important to you? How much you earn, or what you can do with what you earn?

The cost of living in Noosa is significantly cheaper than Sydney, the availabil-ity of schools, the lower cost of fees, and distances to travel for activities and entertainment and shopping and so on is so much less, your expenses are dramatically reduced.

But most especially, the cost of real estate in Australia’s premier holiday destination, was and remains extraordinary value comparative to Sydney.

For years I made a weekly trip to Sydney for two days, and then reduced it to one, and then to one a fortnight…

But the Thursday night flight home was always full of familiar faces of those who flew out weekly on a Sunday night to Sydney to work 4 full days, returning to work from home on Friday and spend the weekend with the kids at the beach, or footy, or even at home. Because they could.

Feel free to call me to find out more about how I did it, and how you can too.

Do the kids like to surf? Want horses? Do you want the fresh air and healthy active lifestyle that Noosa promises? Would you like to save a fortune on your housing costs? Would you like to save some money, buy some investment properties, put the kids through private school, and still have fun money left over?

The average family home in Noosaville costs somewhere between $550,000 and $950,000 depending on the size and quality of finish. A 3 bedroom renovator on the canal between $1.3m and $1.5m. A really nice 4 bedroom home on the beach, around $2m.

It is achievable. It is workable. It is affordable. And it’s fun.
