Real-time Gesture Recognition and Robot control
Through Blob Tracking
AIM:
This paper presents vision based interface that has been designed to instruct a device
Switching through gestures with blob detection techniques using image processing.
INTRODUTION:
As the need for human-computer interaction (HCI grows in man! aspects of the digital
world" various wa!s of communicating with computers have been e#ploited and there is little doubt
that hand gesture is one of the most intuitive wa!s for this end. $ore and more applications in
virtual realit! (%&" gaming" human-robot interaction (H&I and HCI based on hand gesture and
posture recognition have emerged in the past decade. It's not new to stud! on a remote control for
home appliance such as air conditioner using human's free hand gesture instead of cumbersome
hand-held wireless remote controllers. evertheless" to the best of our )nowledge" there e#ists no
commercial remote controller that uses free hand gesture because it requires high robustness to
various illumination changes in living room and full automation without an! constraint or direct
intervention of users. Although there are some studies to satisf! the requirements" most researches
on gesture recognition have been devoted to solve sophisticated problems such as understanding
sign languages b! interpreting sequences of *+ motion or shape of Hands.
!"I#ITING #$!M!:
In previous approaches" the device can be switched on or off b! using radio frequenc!
technolog! and I& transmitting technolog!. ,! using such a technolog!" different )inds of remote
can be used to control the various devices. enerall!" there are two t!pes of remote controls Infra
red" and &adio frequenc!. Infrared remote controls wor) b! sending pulses of infrared light to a
device" while &/ remote controls use radio waves in much the same wa!. 0ragmaticall!" the biggest
difference between the two is range. I& remote controls require a clear line of sight to the receiving
device and their range ma#es out at about *1 feet (2.34 meters. &/ remote controls can go through
walls and around corners" with a range of roughl! 311 feet (*1.45 meters.
%RO%O#!D #T!M:
6e propose a s!stem" using which the user can control the device in an! environment using
various gestures commands. Here the user operates the switching through a laptop or a 0C with in-
built webcam or e#ternal webcam. This webcam is used to capture real time video stream of hand

gestures with blob detection is to generate commands for the divice switching. 7sing the gesture
technique developed" divice is switched without an! intraction.
