RFID provides the link between the physical world of assets and the information technology world. By connecting your assets through RFID or EPC and combining that with information from the sensors and controllers in the physical world, organi-zations will have the potential to achieve a level of optimization and profitability that will take competitive advantage to a new level.

The left hand side of this diagram depicts the physical world—the readers, tags, sen-sors, printers, responders, etc. that are part of the physical environment. The right hand side depicts the IT world, which consists of the basic components required to effectively incorporate physical world information into your information systems.

While many companies are analyzing the physics of RFID and determining where to place tags and readers, the information architecture that processes the data from the physical world is critical to maximizing the return on sensor-based computing invest-ments. Effective linkage and utilization of the data coming from the physical world requires a reliable, scalable event-driven information architecture.

Oracle Sensor-Based Services provides a comprehensive end-to-end information management solution to capture, manage, analyze, access and respond to events hap-pening in your enterprise.

"RFID must be deployed as part of a complete system that allows organizations to capture, move and manage information to and from the point of business activity," said Phil Lazo, vice president and general manager of Symbol's RFID Infrastructure Division. "Symbol's introduction of the DC 400 and MC9000-G with RFID further demonstrates that RFID is not a stand-alone technology which is disconnected from the network and unmanageable."

"The Symbol MC9000-G with RFID enables employees working at the edge of the enterprise to play a critical role in enterprise mobility by capturing information from both RFID tags and bar codes, helping them to move information faster, so real-time decisions can be made," continued Lazo. "RFID technology must be part of a tightly integrated solution that combines both mobile and fixed RFID readers with other enterprise mobility elements in order to enable organizations to capture, move and manage critical information from the dock door to the retail floor."

Symbol's DC 400 is the industry's first EPC-enabled turnkey RFID portal solution designed specifically for industrial dock doors and portal environments. The DC 400 is an easy-to-install, remotely managed 900MHz RFID solution that will allow manu-facturing facilities, distribution centers, and retail stores to read class 0 (read only and read/write) and class 1 RFID tags at all shipping and receiving points, without human intervention. The ruggedized design of the DC 400 portal solution was created spe-cifically for the harsh environmental conditions of a warehouse.

Symbol has partnered with Infologix as an Oracle Systems Integrator. InfoLogix - a world-class leader in E-Mobile technology - provides businesses and institutions with innovative mobile data solutions. As a first to market, InfoLogix has recently intro-duced the RFID SR1000 Edge Server. The “physical world” of RFID and sensor technology will generate massive quantities of data. To realize a sustainable competitive advantage from sensor-based computing, you need to turn that data into operational intelligence and use it to transform the enterprise, agency, or value chain.

The five challenges that IT systems need to address are:

• Capture Information Sensor-based information must be captured from a wide array of hardware plat-forms, including RFID readers, location and temperature sensors, light stacks and more. This can create a huge development overhead to integrate applica-tions with these different hardware paradigms.

Information Challenges RFID

R E A L - T I M E I N F O R M A T I O N M A N A G E M E N T 6

• Manage Information Sensor-based computing creates an explosion of data and events. The challenge comes in creating a single source of truth for RFID data that is scalable, reliable, and secure on a common flexible infrastructure. The new information architec-ture must integrate with existing information sources, applications and business processes, and facilitate the development of new, value-generating applications and business processes.

• Analyze Information Data and events must be analyzed in near real-time to provide the business intel-ligence and business activity monitoring for continuous process improvement.

• Access Information Incoming data needs to be made available throughout the supply network to trigger critical business processes. This includes providing the information inter-nally to all relevant enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications and exter-nally to trading partners and customers.

• Respond to information and Events A sensor-based computing solution should allow for organizations to manage by exception and respond to events triggered from their supply chain. Employees must be empowered to access, interpret and act on information when and where they need it.

An event-driven architecture with integrated support for RFID will enable the real-time enterprise.

Oracle Sensor Edge Server provides the link to the physical world by connecting to RFID readers, sensors and response devices at the “edge” of the infrastructure. The Sensor Edge Server captures, filters and dispatches data to the center of your IT infra-structure and relays instructions from the rest of the IT infrastructure to response devices such as light stacks, printers and other material handling equipment. Captured data is normalized to ensure consistency between sensors and to reduce the amount of data that needs to be handled by the network and applications.

Key features of the Sensor Edge Server include:

• Sensor Data Collection — Integrate with any sensor source including RFID readers, printers, temperature, motion, pressure, location, and any re-sponse device such as light stacks, message boards and sound systems. Extensi-ble driver architecture to easily develop and implement custom drivers to plug in to the Sensor Edge Server. Supported vendors include Alien, Intermec, Patlite, Symbol / Matrics, Tyco, Zebra and more.

• Sensor Data Filtering — Cleansing and normalization of data from individ-ual sensors and groups of sensors. Only relevant data is passed onto further layers of application infrastructure. Pre-built filters include: Pass-Thru Filter, Pallet Pass-Thru Filter, Shelf Filter, Pallet Shelf Filter, Check Tag Filter, Cross Reader Redundant Filter. Extensible filter framework enables development of custom filters for custom event processing requirements.

• Sensor Data Dispatcher — Guaranteed message delivery between the RFID reader or other sensor and the application. Supported dispatch options include Oracle Streams, JMS, Web Services, HTTP Post. Extensible dispatcher framework enables development of custom dispatchers that plug into the Sensor Edge Server.

• Device and Server Management — Monitor and manage RFID readers and other devices connected to your Sensor Edge Servers with built-in heartbeat

Sensor data is wide and varied, and so are the applications that need to use it. Unfor-tunately, with standalone applications managing interpretation, information easily becomes unsynchronized, leading to inconsistent data, and ultimately conflicting con-clusions. Reconciliation becomes impossible without access to the original sensor data.

To achieve true visibility into enterprise-wide operations, RFID and sensor readings need to be managed centrally in a coherent way. Instead of storing sensor data in individual silos, all sensor readings should be stored in context so the measurements can be interpreted to detect relevant events.

Oracle Database 10g provides the foundation for a “Single Source of Truth.” To-gether with the Oracle Sensor Edge Server and the sensor data repository, Oracle offers an integrated source of consistent information, derived from, and fully trace-able to your original sensor data. Sensor readings captured and filtered by the Oracle Sensor Edge Server are automatically stored in the sensor data repository. By correlat-ing this sensor data with information already in the repository, a temporal view is created, keeping track of the world in real time, while maintaining data integrity.

Applications no longer need to keep sensor readings and the associated information synchronized. Oracle takes care of managing this information for you—assembling, securing, and distributing the information automatically. Applications only need to focus on the business logic, where they create value in your enterprise.

As an information user, you can go back in time to formulate your own interpreta-tions from the base facts. Because the sensor data repository contains a full temporal record of all sensor data, you can pose questions that you could not foresee at time of design, and have them answered from this single source of truth. The sensor data repository provides the synchronized information that applications need, so informa-tion architecture complexity stays simple and scalable.
