Karner Blue GreenwayIndiana Dunes National Lakeshore“to unify the community and provide educationalopportunities through a dynamic east-westgreenway corridor that thoughtfully improves anddemonstrates regional ecological systems”The Dunes National Lakeshore, located in northwestern Indiana, can be described as a dynamic combination of industry, ecology and art. Unfortunately, there is currently a large gap separating the trail to the east and the west. This plan proposes a safe and accessible trail that works with existing infrastructure to connect the gap in the trail and move users through the east-west corridor.
Design ConceptThis master plan shows the design proposal for the entire Dunes National Lakeshore. The red line shows the proposed trail location that would bridge the existing gap. This thoroughfare functions as a connecting piece that will transport users across the southern end of the industrial site safely and efficiently. The dashed arrows highlight the major north and south connecting corridors that could connect to southern neighborhoods and draw more users to the site.

Also on this map are the proposed Karner Blue metapopulations. The large grey circles show where existing DNL properties could implement butterfly habitats while the blue circles show where property is yet to be acquired. If these areas were to be acquired and butterfly populations implemented, this site could be a very successful ecological greenway focused on the Karner Blue Butterfly.
Meta-Population Explanation
Green Space Time-LapseThe first map highlights the existing green space owned by the National Lakeshore across the site and pocket green areas to the south of the Lakeshore properties. There is a clear gap in the East-West corridor associated with the steel industry located in the area.
While the 5-year plan focuses on bridging the gap in the trail, the 10 and 20-year plans expand upon the North/South connecting greenways, but also focuses on a strong connection to Michigan City. Implementing additional green space to the North and East will encourage a strong physical and ecological connection between these two cities and more importantly, along the Lakeshore.

ARCHITECTURE
Bridging the Gap: Greenway ConnectionsTaking a closer look at the gap in the trail, more detailed design decisions were made about particular areas along the proposed trail. This map shows a much more precise placement of the proposed trail and also exposed potential problem areas. The highlighted areas on the map were further explored as they presented unique safety challenges where the trail was crossing existing infrastructure like roadways, railroads, and overpasses.
Besides the thoroughfare greenway, designing at this scale also allowed for placement of an ecological greenway system that would act less as a transportation or commuter route and would provide more of a leisurely greenway experience. This trail system would create a space for recreational and educational activities.

After defining three focus areas, United States Census and IndianaMAP Data was compiled and organized into GIS maps. Multiple maps were generated for each focus question in order to analyze trends of data over the course of a few years. The comparison of these maps led to an understanding of trends and transitions in this community. Overall, the Datascape is an intuitive and measurable report that uses specific data to answer questions and inform designers of relevant information about a specific site.
Analyzing the trends of this data created a very informative and useful Datascape that will strengthen the design of the regional trail system and will ensure that the trail is designed and utilized to its full potential, creating a relevant and meaningful experience for the residents of surrounding areas.

Information Center RenderingThis rendering is an example of the detail that was considered while designing each of the focus areas that were identified on the original greenway gap plan. This particular rendering (focus area 1) addresses the issue of the trail passing underneath the existing overpass. An information center and restroom area was also placed here along with bike racks for visitors who are utilizing the trail for biking.
The trailhead that connects with the existing Marquette Trail will guide curious visitors to the ecological thouroghfare while also providing a scenic wetland overlook and bike restroom amenities.

This plot has been sprinkled with small but meaningful details such as an outdoor reading nook, native vegetation, an outdoor kitchen and an accompanying herb garden. With the addition of some open lawn space, this space will allow for both passive and active recreation as well as an area for hosting gatherings.
Pergolas are placed throughout the yard to utilize the compressional sensation an overhead plane as well as an area to feature climbing plants. One of these pergolas frames the outdoor reading nook and provides a sense of enclosure and surrounds the reader in beautiful and fragrant blooms.
Heurtley HouseThe curvilinear design of the planting beds and pathways were planned to offset and highlight the rectalinear floor-plan of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Heurtley House. They are also meant to soften the space and create a less formal layout.

Using intermediate engineering skills, this project provided an opportunity to explore the challenges associated with grading plans. Besides gaining a greater understanding for drainage and grading principles, this project also strengthened my AutoCAD skills.

U.S.S. Indianapolis
This project was designed to alter the current site into an area that offers a therapeutic healing experience in the heart of Indianapolis centered around the tragedy that befell the U.S.S. Indianapolis. Elements include a winding path that frames views towards the memorial, plants that soften the urban hardscape, and water elements that call to mind the life of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. This memorial garden will act as a learning experience for those not directly involved with the tragedy and a healing experience for those that were affected by it.
The site itself lies within the boundary of the American Legion Mall, which is in turn apart of the larger Indianapolis Mall National Historic District. Five blocks of downtown Indianapolis make up the district, from University Park to the Indiana State Library. The district was designed to realize the concepts of the “City Beautiful” movement of the early 20th century. Concepts included a classic formality to the buildings and landscapes in addition to an overall grand monumental scale. These concepts are apparent in the neoclassical style that the American Legion employs in its building complex and the formal parterres that line the Mall.
