Kids Club is a great way to continue exposing our children to music. As they are performers themselves, having a frequent opportunity to see professionals perform gives them something to aspire to. Kids can see sports on TV or in person, and picture themselves in that role, but when it comes to music performance, live is pretty much the only way to have kids see something that they could picture themselves doing.

Darryl Mickens has been teaching Tai Chi in Ann Arbor for 18 years. However, it was more than 20 years ago while working as a Special Education teacher that Darryl dreamed of being an instructor. After 24 years of teaching, Darryl retired in 2012 and the next year obtained a Tai Chi for Arthritis instructor certification through the Tai Chi for Health Institute. It was at this time that Darryl began teaching for Community Education & Recreation. The next certification came in 2014 when Darryl received a Tai Chi Moving for Better Balance instructor certifica-tion. It has been a joy to teach the Tai Chi for Arthritis class at Rec & Ed. The feedback from my students is always so positive. The interest in professional storytell-ing began about the same time as Tai Chi. Darryl has always enjoyed telling stories to family and friends, but in 2002 decided the time had come to join the Ann Arbor Storytellers Guild. Through-out the years Darryl has had wonderful experiences as a storyteller and enjoys interpreting multicultural folktales, writing his own stories, and developing his personal stories. My new Rec & Ed class is a Storytelling Workshop I hope everyone will enjoy! Tai Chi for Arthritis with Darryl Mickens can be found on page 32 and the Storytelling Workshop can be found on page 10.

Mindfulness helps boost your immune system, encourage healthier eating habits, reduce stress, fight depression, improve memory and focus attention. Studies show that practicing mindful-ness, even for just a few weeks, can bring a variety of physical, psychological, and social benefits. In Rec & Eds winter catalog, youll find classes on being mindful through meditation, thoughtful exercise, and focusing on your inner self. Pages 31-3 5 feature a variety of practices that support mindfulness.

Throughout the catalog, other classes will help you be calm and centered through painting, pottery, dancing, writing and finding your singing voice. Consider creating a rain garden, bird watching, exercising, or learning a martial art to improve your health

    and wellness.

The Rec & Ed staff wishes you a wonderful, healthy, prosperous New Year.
