ATTACHMENT "A" (CONCERNING ITEM #10 ON APPLICATION)

A radiation survey of a lab orototype system revealed low levels of radia-tion. (See Below). Because the system-is designed for full automatic opera-tion and little or 'no maintenance a radiation survey meter will not berequired. The sealed source system will be obtained enclosed in the sourcebox and will be returned to supplier, or suitable licensed facility, ifmaintenance is required.

The following measurements were made at a 100 millicurie Americium 241 sealedsource at the outer edge of the fixture frame at approximately 2, 4 & 8 feetabove the floor. Measurements for radiation were made with a Victoreen Model440 low energy radiation survey meter.

The permissible dose rate established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission(NRC) for unrestricted areas is 2 millirems in any 1 hour. In addition, the NRC does not permit yearly exposures in unrestricted areas above 0.5 rem.For x-rays,. millirems and milliroentgen are considered equivalent.

The radiation protection and control measures are designed into and part of1

| the inspection system. The electrically operated shutter mechanism is con-trolled by a microprocessor that will only send power to the s,hutter if threeconditions are met:

1. . An automotive assembly must be in the fixture, positioned -i,

properly as detected by a proximity sensor.,

| 2. The lifter mechanism is in the raised position, as detectedby a control switch. j

3. The safety gates are closed providing electrical power tothe system. j

If any of the above conditions are not met, the shutter mechanism releasing |

gama radiation will not open.,

'

These safety gates are designed to restrict employee entrance into this highlymechanized production line, and will also function to restrict employee entrance-;

into the radiation area. j|

| A leak test will be' performed at intervals not to exceed 6 months. The radia- .<

' tion safety officer (listed in item #5), will perform the wipe test with wipe -test patches supplied by G.M. Industrial Hygiene. Wipe testing will consistof wiping all external surfaces of the source box. G.M. Industrial Hygienewill analyze wipe test patches with sensitive radiation monitoring instruments

L capable of reading such patches to 0.001 microcuries and report back to the'plant.

|

| In the event of an accident that indicates the source box may have been damaged, i

| a wipe test will be performed to assure that the sealed source has not been !

damaged. If damage is detected, or wipe test indicates a leak, the power to thesource- box shutter. will be immediately turned off, the hinged cover placed overthe source box and the unit returned to supplier or licensed facility for repair.

h Since a spare source box containing a sealed source will be available, any ser-|' vice or maintenance that might be required will_ result in the unit being returned

to supplier or licensed facility for service. ,)

A radiation survey of the production prototyp$syrtem designed by G.M. Manufac-turing Development (N.R.C. License No. 21-125pb OI) was conducted by G.M. Indus g '''

|| . trial Hygiene radiation safety group. This i'nspection system was certified

as safe for production utilization. An intial radiation survey,of the produc-ition equipment will. also be performed by-the G.M. Industrial Hyg' ne radiatione

safety group when equipment installation is completed.
