Recent Advances on Seismic and Blast Protection of Steel Bridges Abolhassan Astaneh-Asl, Ph.D., P.E. Professor, University of California, Berkeley (www.ce.berkeley.edu/~astaneh), and U.S. Fulbright Scholar at ODTU, Ankara, Fall 2013 The first part of this seminar focuses on the effects of near fault permanent displacements during a strong earthquake on the seismic response of long span bridges. Currently these permanent displacements of the ground are not considered in design of long span, long period bridges. The study presented here shows that permanent displacements can increase the seismic forces in the bridge significantly. The second part discusses blast protection of steel and composite bridges against a car bomb blast. Orthotropic decks as well as composite concrete slab on steel girder decks were considered. Recommendations are made on selection of material (steel and concrete) as well as design concepts to protect bridges against catastrophic global collapse in the event of a blast occurring on the deck of the bridge. The first part of this seminar focuses on the effects of near fault permanent displacements during a strong earthquake on the seismic response of long span bridges.
