Recent NECBC Events Highlight TradeOpportunities in Region

The NECBC held a series of events in fall and early winter highlighting trade opportunities and challenges, from energy projects to immigration issues and NAFTA. The NECBC was pleased to welcome Premier Stephen McNeil of Nova Scotia in early December 2014 for a discussion of economic opportunities.
On pages four and five is a summary of the 2014 Energy Conference and on page six is an update on a NAFTA discussion.
Premier McNeil addressed how government, academia, and the private sector in Nova Scotia are collaborating to foster innovation in research and regulation, including the creation of technology “sandboxes” and innovative work in renewable energy. The Premier also highlighted the large-scale projects in the energy, mining, construction and transportation sectors in which Nova Scotia
partners, representing a combined investment of approximately $115 Billion within the Atlantic Region.
As part of his trip to the region, the Premier also participated in an event on the Boston Common recognizing the gift of the annual Nova Scotia Christmas tree to the City of Boston.

The program opened on November 13 with a timely and wide-ranging panel discussion of the New England Governors’ Energy Infrastructure Initiative and the NESCOE process. The speakers were Chairman Thomas Welch of the Maine Public Utilities Commission, Eric Johnson of ISO-NE, James Daly of Northeast Utilities, Dan Dolan of the NE Power Generators Association, and Richard Kanoff of Burns & Levinson. This was followed by a roundtable discussion on Washington and Ottawa Energy and Environmental Policies, with Gaétan Caron of the Univ. of Calgary, André Turmel of Fasken Martineau, Fred Lowther of Dickstein Shapiro, and Sean Conway of Ryerson University. Sheila Slocum Hollis of Duane Morris LLP was the moderator.

Panel 1 was a “fireside chat” moderated by Jon Sorenson of CES, with perspectives offered by Chris Huskilson of Emera, Phil Ribbeck of Repsol, Kim Watson of Tennessee Gas Pipeline, and Bill Yardley of Spectra Energy.
Panel 2 focused on renewable and non-fossil energy opportunities, with Stephen Molodetz of HQ-US, Mike Twomey of Entergy, Jack Burkom of Brookfield Renewable, and Peter Rothstein of the New England Clean Energy Council. Glenn Zacher of Stikeman Elliott was the moderator.
