Focus: Speech bubbles

For this lesson, you will need to log on to the ‘Shed Full of Animations’ section of the Literacy Shed website:

https://www.literacyshed.com/a-shed-full-of-animations.html Watch the short film Ruckus; it is the story of

two greedy robbers.

Main Task:

1. Watch the film at least twice.

2. Think about a scene from the clip. Draw the two robbers. You can add colour if you wish.

3. Add speech bubbles to your character(s). Put inside what you think they would be saying in your chosen

scene. For example:

TOPIC

Focus: Seed dispersal

After pollination has occurred, a plant produces seeds. The ‘parent’ plant needs to ‘disperse’ (scatter) these seeds so that new plants can grow

(remember, a plant is a living thing and ‘reproduces’). The parent plant doesn’t want new plants to grow too close to it (can you think why?) so it tries

to disperse the seeds far and wide. Today, we are going to look at the clever ways plants disperse their seeds. ‘Seed dispersal’ is the final stage in the

plant’s life cycle.

Main Task:

1. Visit the following websites and watch both of the videos:

Seed dispersal: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/znvfb9q

week. To do this, go into the

assignments area on your Spelling

Shed dashboard. These will be

checked and updated weekly by

your teacher. Use this as an

opportunity to move up on your

spelling colour.

Focus: Perimeter

If you need to refresh your memory on perimeter please visit the following website: https://www.theschoolrun.com/what-is-the-perimeter

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a 2D shape. Today’s challenge is focused on rectilinear (rectangular) shapes – these are shapes

that have 2 sets of equal, parallel sides.

Using your learning from yesterday, draw rectilinear shapes with the following perimeters:

10cm

18cm

24cm

*Remember to use a ruler to carefully measure the lengths of the sides of your shapes*

ENGLISH

Focus: Direct Speech before the verb

For this lesson, you will need to log on to the ‘Shed Full of Animations’ section of the Literacy Shed website:

https://www.literacyshed.com/a-shed-full-of-animations.html Watch the short film Ruckus; it is the story of

two greedy robbers.

Main Task:

1. Watch ‘Ruckus’ again.

2. Turn your speech bubbles from yesterday into correctly punctuated direct speech, with the speech at

the start of the sentence (before the verb). See examples below:

“Here comes the train,” said Jim.

“Get ready to jump!” shouted John.

“Look at that ruby!” whispered Jim.

“It’s mine,” snarled John.

3. Remember the rules:

Speech marks (“ and ”) must be used to show what was actually spoken.

A comma (or an exclamation mark or question mark) must be used to separate the speech from the rest of the text.

The final speech mark goes after the separating comma (or exclamation mark or question mark).

Finally, choose appropriate verbs (said, whispered, snarled, growled, shouted, yelled, cried, sobbed…)

Challenge task:

Think about another scene. Write 4 examples of direct speech. Again, put the direct speech at the start of the sentence (before the verb).

TOPIC

Focus: Seed dispersal

Main Task:

1. Visit the following website and watch the video:

Seed dispersal for kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1hRxuy1ezQ

2. Using your learning from yesterday and today’s video, produce a detailed drawing of 3 different seed types. Choose from the following:

Wind dispersal

Animal dispersal (attach to fur)

Animal dispersal (fruit)

Water dispersal

* Top tip: you could pause one of the video clips at a particular point to get a good picture of a seed to sketch!*

Focus: Area

If you need to refresh your memory on area please visit the following website: https://www.theschoolrun.com/what-is-area

Area is the amount of space inside a 2D shape. With rectilinear (rectangular) shapes it is calculated as length x width and is often recorded as mm2,

cm2 or m2.

1) Find the area of the following rectangles:

Challenge task: Here are the measurements for the football pitches of 4 Premier League clubs. Calculate the area of each pitch and then rank them

from largest to smallest.

Focus: Direct Speech after the verb

For this lesson, you will need to log on to the ‘Shed Full of Animations’ section of the Literacy Shed website:

https://www.literacyshed.com/a-shed-full-of-animations.html Watch the short film Ruckus; it is the story of

two greedy robbers.

Main Task:

1. Watch ‘Ruckus’ again.

2. Today we are going to try to write direct speech at the end of the sentence (after the verb).

Jim said, “Here comes the train.”

John shouted, “Get ready to jump!”

Jim whispered, “Look at that ruby!”

John snarled, “It’s mine.”

3. Remember the rules:

A comma (or an exclamation mark or question mark) must be used after the verb to show that direct speech is about to begin.

Speech marks (“ and ”) must be used to show what was actually spoken.

The direct speech must start with a capital letter.

A full stop (or an exclamation mark or question mark) must be used before the final speech mark to show the end of the speech.

4. Using your ideas from Monday and Tuesday, write 5 examples of direct speech at the end of a sentence (after the verb).

Challenge task:

Add a relative clause into your sentences. For example:

Jim, who was hiding behind a rock, said, “Here comes the train.”

Jim, who was staring in disbelief into the safe, whispered, “Just look at that ruby!”

full-of-animations.html Watch the short film Ruckus; it is the story of two greedy robbers.

Main Task:

1. Watch ‘Ruckus’ again.

2. Today we are going to write properly punctuated direct speech where two people are speaking. We have discussed the rules of direct speech.

When we write ‘dialogue’, the golden rule is that when a new person speaks, you need to start a new line. For example:

Focus: Summarising and reviewing

You have been reading for 20 minutes each day, so you should have read a lot of your book or maybe even one or two whole books!

1. If you need to, complete an AR test following the link in the right hand column. Make sure you take your time as the goal is 80% or more! Tip:

Go back into your book to double check before you enter your answer.

2. Write a book review! This is a great time to reflect on the reading you have been doing independently or with a family member. Think about

what you have read this week and choose your favourite character, favourite chapter or favourite extract and write about it. If you would

like to write about a whole book you have read this week, then this is also fine. Below are some question prompts to help inspire you with your

book review, you can present this in your home learning book however you wish:

- Title? Author? Illustrator?

- What rating out of 10 would you give it?

- What did you like best?

- What did you dislike?

- Any new vocabulary you have gained?

- Who was your favourite character? Why?

- What was the storyline? Genre?

- How did it make you feel? Why?

- What feedback would you give the author?

- Would you recommend it to a friend? Why?

Challenge Task:

If you want to push yourself even further, this video is great in helping you understand how to lay out a book review and teach you extra

features you may want to include to push yourself to write an in depth review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhYF3v3zTeo

TOPIC

Focus: VE Day (Victory in Europe Day).

Today is a special day in history! We are celebrating the 75th anniversary of war ending in Europe. Incredibly, we are able to see footage of the

amazing moment that people were told about the news: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEavcsrMoMw

Main Task:

1. Watch the video. It is a great way to imagine you were there hearing the long awaited news. As you are watching,

take note of how happy and free everyone seems.

2. Design an award for someone who fought in WW2. This could be a trophy or medal design.

Page 12: Record all your answers neatly and accurately in your red ... › wp-content › uploads › 2020 › ... · Watch the film at least twice. 2. Think about a scene from the clip. Draw

3. Write a postcard, thank-you card, poem, or letter to someone who fought in WW2 (someone who you are giving your medal/trophy to). Try

to include:

- Something you are grateful for (that they did for you)

- Why you are giving them an award

- What they have done to inspire you
