Red Area Home Learning Heroes Well done for all of the fabulous work that you did last week for the Home Learning Project ‘The Environment’. Thank you to everyone who has completed all of the tasks set on Google Classroom, we are extremely impressed. Last week’s Home Learning Heroes who will receive certificates via email were… Elsie (Garnet) for fantastic work learning to tell the time. Oscar (Jasper) for his beautiful bird house made from a recycled milk bottle. Lola (Ruby) for her very informative PowerPoint about recycling. Great computer skills Lola! Look out for the tasks that we have specifically asked you to complete this week on Google Classroom. We would love to see everyone completing and submitting at least these tasks please. You can also upload any other work that you have done this week into the relevant sections for us to look at. Or, if you have a piece of work that you are particularly proud of and you would like EVERYONE in your class to see it, you can upload a photo onto the Stream. To see what all of your friends have been doing, take a look at the Home Learning Gallery for this week. Enjoy your learning and stay safe! Red Area Teachers

Red Area Weekly Learning Project – Monday 1st June 2020

FOOD

WEEKLY HOME LEARNING

Over the week, please try to complete at least 3 ‘starter’ and 3 ‘Main’ tasks for English and Maths. Please complete a daily fitness task and at least 2 other challenges by Friday.

MAIN ENGLISH TASKS MAIN MATHS TASKS

MAIN READING TASKS MAIN WRITING TASKS This week you are going to focus on capacity. Task 1 – Listen to the song https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/supermovers/42674294 AND/OR watch this video on capacity https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zt9k7ty/articles/zp8crdm. Now, with your adult’s permission, explore your home searching for containers (e.g. washing up liquid, bubble bath, juice, milk). Year 1s, how would you describe the contents of the container? Which container has the most/least? You could refer to resource 4 for useful vocabulary. Year 2s, can you estimate how much liquid is in the containers you find? Can you measure how much liquid the container actually contains? Were you close to your estimate? How many litres or ml should there be in the container if it is full? Task 2 – Find three different shaped bottles. If you fill them with water to the same height, will they contain the same amount of water in each one? Why or why not? Make a prediction and then test your prediction to see if you are right. Please upload a photograph of this task to Google Classroom. Task 3 – Year 1 – have a go at matching the potion bottles to the correct label (resource 5). As an alternative, you could draw them yourself or even create your own potions and make labels using post-it notes. Task 3 – Year 2 – Capacity Countdown! Practise reading the scales to find the volume of the rocket fuel. Remember to look at the scale closely to see if the measurement is in litres or ml. http://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/capacity/index.html

Task 1 – Reading for pleasure For your reading task this week, we would like you to read the story ‘Carrot Club’ using the PDF link on the School Closure Learning page or in the Classwork section of Google Classroom. Or, you may wish to listen to the audio book. Once you have done this, you can complete your 3 VIPERs tasks. You could do one task each day. Audio book: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/go/resource/carrot-club-audio-book-tg2-au-69 Task 2 – VIPERS Vocabulary Draw and label a picture of a character from ‘Carrot Club’. Think carefully about the words and phrases that help to describe the character. Infer Write down 3 questions you want to ask one of the characters from ‘Carrot Club’. Now write down what you think they would say when they answer you. Explain Do you like the ending of ‘Carrot Club’ or would you change it? Why/why not? Write or draw a picture of an alternative ending for the story. Task 3 – Handwriting Create a shopping list for the week. Write the items neatly, thinking carefully about tall and short letters. Year 2s, remember to join your handwriting but NOT your descenders! You may challenge yourself by listing your items according to their food group e.g. dairy, fruits and vegetables, protein. Please upload a photograph of this task to Google Classroom.

Listen to the story ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Browne https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocnRQi89nK8 or read the story yourself if you have the book at home. Take time to discuss interesting aspects of this story. For example, the fact that Handa is carrying the fruit on her head. Also, where do you think the story is based? Task 1 – Create a story map for ‘Handa’s Surprise’. In order to do this, you will need to draw simple pictures to represent key parts of the story in sequence (see example in resource 1). Once you have completed your story map, you may like to share a retelling of the story using the map, with your family. Perhaps you could add actions! If you need a little help to remember the key parts of the story, you could cut, stick and sequence the pictures in resource 2. Task 2 – In the story, Handa kindly delivers a basket of fruit to her friend Akeyo. Akeyo was surprised and delighted with the delivery! Imagine that you are Akeyo and you would like to write a thank you letter to Handa for the basket of fruits. Remember to include ‘Dear Handa’ at the beginning of your letter and end the letter appropriately. Also, try to include interesting adjectives to describe the taste and look of the fruit. For example, ‘delicious’ and ‘juicy’. Task 3 – The animals are a little mischievous in the story because they take the fruits from Handa’s basket. What do you think they were thinking when they saw Handa walking past? Draw your chosen animal and write their thought bubble. You may wish to look at resource 3 to help you. Please upload a photograph of this task to Google Classroom.

STARTER TASKS (To warm up your brain before you do a main task!)

STARTER SPELLING TASKS (10/15 minutes each) STARTER NUMBER TASKS (10/15 minutes each)

Year 1 Using the website: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/owAltSpellings.html (Enter the username: march20 and the password: home) 1) Play ‘word sort’. Sort the words according to the correct spelling pattern that makes the sound ‘ow’ in each word. 2) Play ‘phoneme spotter’. Write down all of the words that contain the ‘ow’ sound. Remember to look out for a range of graphemes. You can check to see if you spotted them all when you have finished. 3) Sound detectives! Look carefully around your home. Can you write a list of all the items you can find which contain the ‘ow’ sound? Use the ‘Best Bet’ poster on the website you have been using to help you to decide which grapheme you need for each word. Year 2 You are learning that some words use ‘o’ for the /u/ sound. Word list: other, brother, mother, another, nothing, Monday. 1) Use the website https://spellingframe.co.uk/. Choose Year 2 – Rule 18. Choose from the games to help you learn to spell some of the words listed. 2) Beat the clock! Choose a word from the spelling list and write it as many times as you can in 1 minute. Check your spelling and record your score. Repeat for the remaining words in the list. Each day, try to beat your previous score! 3) Act them out! You will need at least two people to play this game. First, write the words on post-it notes and place them into a bowl. One person chooses a word and attempts to act it out, while the remaining person/people write down what they think the word is. Check it and swap roles!

Year 1 Task 1 – Play number frogs. Write 10 numbers to 50 on post-it notes and place them on the floor (these are the lily pads). Jump like a frog on each lily pad until a leader says ‘stop’. What number did you land on? Now, practise counting forwards and backwards from that number. Repeat! You could even play music whilst you jump, and stop jumping when the music stops. Challenge: include numbers to 100. Task 2 – Play multiplication bingo. All players will need to write down 5 numbers which are multiples of a given times table (2x, 5x, 10x). For example, if you were doing 2x, they may write 2, 10, 14, 18, 22. The bingo caller will say a multiplication question (e.g. five times two equals…). If the player has the answer written down, they can cross it off. The player who has all their numbers crossed off first, is the winner! Task 3 – Play a game of Fruit Splat addition. http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/fruitshoot/fruitshoot_addition.htm Select level 1 to begin with. Year 2 Task 1 – Use TTRS to practise the times table that you are working on.

Task 2 – Choose a number from 0-99. How many ways can

you think of to represent/make that number? You could write the number in words, draw base 10, draw tally marks, partition the number using a part whole model, draw a NL etc. Task 3 – Use some small objects like buttons or Lego. Collect a handful and organise them into groups of 3. Count in 3s to find the total. Then, write the multiplication number sentence to represent the objects e.g. 2 groups of 3 Lego pieces, 2 x 3 = 6

You could: 1.Draw and colour your own fruit and vegetable portrait 2. Draw and paint your own fruit and vegetable portrait 3. Cut out and stick fruit and vegetable pictures onto a face template 4. You could even use real fruit and vegetables to create a 3D design We cannot wait to see your creative designs!

Art: Explore the work of artist Lynn Flavell. How does she represent fruit and vegetables? https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01d6gw2 Can you create a piece of artwork inspired by Lynn Flavell? She enjoys experimenting with colour and texture. In the video, you will see her creating repeating patterns using card templates, using sponges with paint and even printing with fruits and vegetables. It is important to check with your adult what resources you have available to help you to create your artwork. It can be as simple as using card, crayons and scissors.

Science: Activity 1 Begin by exploring healthy eating and nutrition using the BBC Bitesize website https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zv4cwmn/resources/1 Then, make your own healthy lunchbox by following the link: http://archive.foodafactoflife.org.uk/Activity.aspx?siteId=14&sectionId=61&contentId=56 What benefits are there to making healthy choices? I like the look of that bright yellow banana.

It looks simply delicious. I wonder if I could

sneak up behind Handa, dangle carefully

from this long branch and collect the fruit

from the gigantic basket? How mischievous

of me!
