Pinch valves are the ideal choice forhandling the abrasive and corrosiveslurries created in Flue GasDesulfurization (FGD) systems.Pinch valves are used on lime feedlines because they have an unparal-leled ability to throttle lime slurrywithout plugging or scaling buildup.
Pinch valves also provide a posi-tive, drop-tight shut-off, ofteneliminating the need for asecond isolation valve.
With a pinch valve, all of theprocess is contained within thesleeve, preventing hardening orscale buildup of the lime slurryfrom hindering valve operation.Further, lime has a tendency todewater and plug pipelines.The flexing action of a pinchvalve will break up dewateredlime and prevent plugging.
Manual pinch valves are commonlyused on lime feed, hydrocyclonebypass lines and pump isolation.Manual pinch valves outlast stellitemetal valves and trims 15:1 inabsorber reagent, recycling and sumpdischarge applications.

Red Valve manual and control pinchvalves are also widely used on calci-um sulfate, a byproduct of an FGDsystem. Calcium sulfate is then usedas a synthetic gypsum for wallboardmanufacturing. Knife Gates on Fly and Bottom Ash
A stainless steel gate passes throughtwo heavy-duty reinforced rubber slur-ry sleeves. These sleeves provide acompression fit resulting in a drop-tight seal. When the valve is in theopen position, the gate is completelyremoved from the flow path, eliminat-ing any obstructions. In the closedposition, the valve provides a bi-directional seal.

Ash is the most abrasive applicationwithin a power plant. Red Valve pinchvalves and knife gate valves are regular-ly used in fly ash service. Piston-actuat-ed knife gate valves are used on transferlines and for hopper isolation once theash is shaken out into the precipitators.
The Series G Knife Gate has an eco-nomical cast-iron body with a stainlesssteel lining and gate that provide theperformance of an all-stainless valve ata fraction of the cost. The Series G isavailable with a metal or resilient seatand can be operated manually, pneu-matically or electrically.
Bottom ash systems most often useRed Valve’s Flexgate Slurry KnifeGate. The Flexgate uses two elas-tomer seats to provide excellent wearresistance and bi-directional sealing.The replaceable seats act as a wiperto clean the gate during operation,thereby reducing packing wear.
Flexgates are often used in sluicingand slurry transfer lines to lagoons,and, when ash is used as an additiveto cement, knife gates are used ondense phase conveying systems.Both knife gate styles are available inlarge-diameter sizes.

Red Valve Type A pinch valves areregularly specified for the convey-ing and injection of coal. Theadvantages of the Type A air-oper-ated pinch valve are its full-portopening and abrasion-resistantpinch sleeve. The Type A wasintroduced in 1953 for use on theworld’s first coal slurry pipeline.
Coal Feed and Washing
Even at high velocities, the Type APinch Valve will outlast a metal-seated valve due to the durability ofits elastomer sleeve. The resiliencyof the sleeve reduces wear andallows the Type A to seal drop-tighton coal that is trapped in the seal-ing area.
The operation of the Type A is sim-ple and reliable. The body func-tions as a built-in actuator, eliminat-ing the need for pneumatic,hydraulic or electric actuators.Varying the pressure within theannular space between the bodyand the sleeve can open, throttle orclose the valve. There are no slidingor rotating parts and no deadspaces where material can collect.
The Type A can also be used foropen-loop control in non-critical,low-pressure-drop applications.With the addition of a proportionalrelay, the Type A Pinch Valve is aneconomical slurry control valve.
The Type A Pinch Valve makes an excellent, low-cost throttling valve. By using a booster relay, a3-15 psi air signal can be used to modulate thevalve. This arrangement eliminates both thecostly external actuator and complicated posi-tioner required by other control valves.

Tideflex® Coarse Bubble Diffusersare the only diffusers available onthe market today that provide com-plete backflow prevention of sludgeand slurry during zero airflow peri-ods. The TF-A Diffuser is unique inthat it can be installed in any angleand any elevation. This combinationof non-clog design and flexible ori-entation allows for bottom installa-tion (below the carrier pipe) againstthe tank floor to provide completetop-to-bottom mixing and ensuretotal solids suspension.
Red Valve’s coarse bubble aerationsystems are constructed of heavy-duty standard piping materials towithstand the high turbulence pro-vided by the system. The systemsare available in sizes 40 to 80 pvc,HDPE and stainless steel.

Cooling water discharge is regulated inthe U.S. by the NPDES and by similarregulations elsewhere. The common goalof these regulations is to minimize theenvironmental impact of the dischargedcooling water.
The primary concern is how much thetemperature of the discharged water willincrease the temperature of the sur-rounding river or lake. A secondary con-cern is the amount of chemical additivespresent in the discharge water, such asthose used to reduce corrosion.
