HYPOTHESIS

Moderate Consumption of Red Wine Reduces the Risk of Breast Cancer

Page 4: Red Wine and Breast Cancer

INTRODUCTION

1 in 8 women will get breast cancer during their lifetime

Based on this statistic, 10 people in HNF 320 will develop breast cancer in their lifetime

1/3 of cancers are linked to diet 3-4 million cancer cases can be prevented

each year by change in diet Grapes are most widely consumed fruit

worldwide Contain polyphenols

Page 5: Red Wine and Breast Cancer

POLYPHENOLS

Antioxidants found in the seeds, skins, and stems of grapes

Beneficial health effects including inhibiting cancer growth

Resveratrol is a powerful polyphenol in red wine and prevents tumor growth

Page 6: Red Wine and Breast Cancer

ROLE OF ESTROGEN

Estrogen: hormone that contributes to normal breast and sexual development

Estrogen stimulates cell division, meaning excessive amounts can lead to tumor development

Polyphenols decrease estrogen levels

Phytoestrogens are estrogens found in plants

Page 7: Red Wine and Breast Cancer

PHYTOESTROGENS

Commonly found in tofu, soy beans, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables

Diet high in phytoestrogens can decrease one’s risk for breast cancer If phytoestrogens bind to the estrogen

receptor instead of the stronger human made estrogen less cell division will occur

STUDY #1: POTENT INHIBITORY ACTION OF RED WINE POLYPHENOLS ON HUMAN BREAST CANCER CELLS

Objective: To determine the anti-proliferative affect of red wine concentrate on the hormone sensitive breast cancer cells

Results: Low concentrations of polyphenols, and consecutively, consumptions of wine or other polyphenol rich foods and beverages could have a beneficial anti-proliferative affect on breast cancer cell growth

Page 9: Red Wine and Breast Cancer

STUDY #2: RESVERATROL, A POLYPHENOLIC COMPOUND FOUND IN GRAPES AND WINE, IS AN AGONIST FOR THE ESTROGEN RECEPTOR

Objective: To determine whether Resveratrol may be considered a phytoestrogen

Researchers found resveratrol binds to the human estrogen competeing with human made estrogen

Results: Resveratrol is a phytoestrogen, meaning Resveratrol plays a role in reducing breast cancer risk

Page 10: Red Wine and Breast Cancer

STUDY #3: CANCER CHEMOPREVENTIVE ACTIVITY OF RESVERATROL, A NATURAL PRODUCT DERIVED FROM GRAPES

Objective: To determine whether Resveratrol can be a cancer chemopreventive agent

Used a mouse mammory gland culture model of carcinogenesis to test activity resveratrol

Results: found to inhibit tumor initiation, promotion, and progression

CONCLUSION

Positive correlation between red wine consumption and decrease breast cancer risk Hypothesis is accepted

Polyphenols have been shown to be beneficial in decreasing breast cancer risk

More research is needed, especially clinical trials involving humans

Page 12: Red Wine and Breast Cancer

IMPLICATIONS

Moderate consumption of red wine can be beneficial

Grapes contain the polyphenols, not alcohol

Eating grapes or drinking 100% natural grape juice can offer similar protection against breast cancer

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS

Both men and women should have a diet rich in polyphenols (antioxidants)

TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS

Rewards: Became knowledgeable on importance of

diet with breast healthBecame more familiar with researching

Challenges:Difficult to compile all of our information Interpreting the research articles
