Edition 24 Welcome to the 24th Edition of Healthy Schools Newsletter
Congratulations to the schools below who have achieved Enhanced Healthy Schools Status during summer term 2016. Each school has identified health and well being outcomes to improve for their children and young people and they have put in place actions to make this happen. The actions which these schools are implementing will impact on their children and young people’s ability to make safe, informed healthy choices and this will ensure that pupils feel happy and safe at school and achieve their full potential.

Redcar and Cleveland Public Health department are continuing to fund the School Health Survey next
academic year.
We have worked with the nationally respected School Health Education Unit based in Exeter
http://sheu.org.uk/ to develop the surveys and have adapted them to be really useful to Redcar and
Cleveland Schools. The results are available instantly to schools and provide a useful way of ensuring
any PSHE programmes meet the needs of your children and young people.
The survey is available for completion by year one to year eleven pupils however there is flexibility for
schools to choose which year groups take part. Key stage one children answer thirteen questions, key
stage two children answer twenty nine questions and secondary students answer sixty two questions.
Questions cover the following themes: Safety, Bullying, Behaviour, Healthy Eating, Relationship,
Smoking, Physical Activity and Emotional Health and Well-being.
Schools/academies who have taken part this year have found the results extremely useful when
planning health and well-being activity/developments for the year ahead.
All schools who have completed the surveys this year will have accessed their online results however
just a reminder that you will also receive a printed copy of your survey report by September 2016.
If anyone would like further information regarding the School Health Survey and how to sign up for next
year please do not hesitate to contact:

Quorn Cooking with Jill Weatherburn – Badger Hill
Redcar and Cleveland Healthy Schools Programme
On Thursday 13th January, Year4, Year3, Year2 and Year1 at Badger Hill
Primary School were lucky enough to have the chance to cook up a storm with
a fantastic cook called Jill Weatherburn. After washing our hands, Jill and
some lucky children got to cook some delicious food from different countries.
‘Amazingly, the very first Quorn product was produced in 1930! Swiftly, we
moved on to the cooking. Before we went on to the pizza, we started to make
the rainbow Bolognese. First into the pan we added a tub full of onions, then
crunchy peppers and red ripe tomatoes! While the rainbow Bolognese was
cooking, some children were allowed to go up to the front and cook a healthy
pizza for the rest of the children. As the children got up to the front, Jill
prepared the pizza base. Smelling the food, Jill spread the tomato puree
across the pizza base. Then, Jill sprinkled creamy cheese on the pizza. When
she had finished, we started the paella. Interestingly, Paella comes from
Spain.’
‘THEN WE ATE THE DELICIOUS FOOD!!!! Will you try Quorn? ‘

Fluoride Varnishing and tooth brushing scheme
HEALTHY TEETH IN OUR SCHOOLS
Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council have just re-commissioned the Fluoride
Varnish programme in 11 schools across the borough. The schools were
selected because of the levels of tooth decay in their schools, their
participation in the school tooth brushing scheme, and their commitment to
supporting the delivery of the programme to as many pupils as possible. The
scheme has been shown to work best in schools that work hard to encourage
parents to complete consent forms, and the Council are extremely grateful
for their assistance.
Redcar & Cleveland has one of the worst dental disease rates in the North
East with disease highest in our most deprived areas. A review has shown
that applying fluoride varnish has a really positive impact on the dental
health of children, with those children participating experiencing an average
43% reduction in decayed, missing & filled teeth.
Coatham Dental Practice and Eston Dental practice have been appointed as
the deliverers for the schemes and are currently meeting with their schools
to book dates for delivery for a minimum of 2 years from September 2016.
We also fund tooth brushing programmes within primary schools – please
take the opportunity to participate in this valuable scheme if you are
contacted by the Oral Health Promotion Team. We provide all the
equipment, training and support. Encouraging good oral health early can set
good dental habits in our children for life!
If you would like any further information on these two programmes please
contact Lesley Gibbin or Katrina Jackson (01287 612302).

Healthy School Week in KTS Academy
Between Tuesday 24th
May and Friday 27th
May, students at KTS Academy took part in a wide range of
healthy activities as part of this year’s Healthy Schools Week. Supported by Redcar and Cleveland Health
Improvement team, this year’s activities included: fencing with Bangs and Blades, light and sound
sessions led by TNT, Attention Balance and Coordination (ABC) with My Leisure, Sound Sensations
sensory sessions, archery with Valley Adventures and Quorn foods cookery lessons.
Students loved learning new skills and experiencing new activities. The Quorn stir fry and pizzas proved
very popular with Jill Weatherburn from Quorn, as did the range of class smoothies and healthy snacks
that were made during the week. Article written by Chris Race, Healthy Schools Co-ordinator
KTS Academy Health Week
The year 5 and 6 classes had an interactive cookery session with Jill Weatherburn, who works for Quorn. The
children learnt about the history of Quorn and how it was invented after the Second World War when the
government thought there might be a food shortage.
Jill Weatherburn brought lots of healthy ingredients, including fruit and vegetables, as well as Quorn and spices
for seasoning. The children tasted some new ingredients and then had the opportunity to make a range of dishes,
including rainbow Bolognese, sausage rolls, paella, wraps and pizza, all with Quorn.
The best part was trying all the different dishes that had been made and both classes found the afternoons both
informative and fun. The children used their ICT skills to write and send thank you letters to Jill and they
mentioned they would like to visit the Quorn factory in the future so we will have to see if that is
possible!

Over the course of this academic year, Little Sprouts have been coming into our school to work with pupils from Year 1, right through to Year 6. Throughout, we have been very impressed with their level of expertise and their willingness to work with school in a positive and productive fashion. From our first meeting, when we began to plan possible cooking sessions, we decided that linking healthy eating with children's current topics would be a good idea and we have been very impressed with the results. All of the 11 sessions that have been delivered in school so far this year have been well attended by our pupils' parents as well as the children themselves and their feedback to us has been extremely positive. With this in mind, we plan to host an after-school club in the second half of the summer term. I would not hesitate in recommending Little Sprouts and hope to be able to work with them again soon. Article written by James Ledger, Deputy Head Testimonials from Handale Primary
‘A wonderful educational morning in which the children were educated and entertained. They loved it!’ Healthy Eating Workshop ‘We loved every second! Great for kids to try new things and linked perfectly with our topic’ Vikings and Saxons ‘Expertly delivered and the children were continually engaged in the session. Fully enjoyed by both staff, parents and children.’ Roman Workshop

NSPCC – Stay Safe
The NSPCC have launched our Speak out. Stay safe. programme so that a generation of children have
the knowledge and understanding they need to stay safe from abuse and neglect.
The programme provides child-friendly, interactive assemblies and workshops delivered by specially
trained staff and volunteers to help children:
• understand abuse in all its forms and recognise the signs of abuse
• know how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse
• know how to get help, and the sources of help available to them, including our Childline service.
By the end of our visit we know the children feel empowered – knowing how they can speak out and
stay safe.
"NSPCC has helped me to build the confidence to tell people about my worries and problems." –
Child’s feedback
"This service provides important information in a child-friendly way – it should be made mandatory in
all schools. A brilliant service!" Teacher, Wistaston Primary, Crewe

Normanby Primary School ran a successful ‘Healthy Minds and Bodies’ week from 16th – 20th May. Many of the health related initiatives that run nationally during May were promoted, including Mental Health Awareness Week and National Walking month, which encompassed Walk to School Week. The children were given a WoW (Walk once a Week) postcard to complete throughout the month with a chance to be entered into a prize draw. Isabelle Watson, Y4, was delighted to receive a football signed by the Middlesbrough football team. On Tuesday 17th May, walking to school was once again promoted with ‘Happy Shoesday’ where the children and staff in school wore the shoes that made them feel the happiest. There were also three walking buses from around the local area, which were greeted by Spike the Hedgehog on their arrival at school. Throughout the week in school, the majority of the children in school were involved in a health related workshops with visitors to school from a number of different agencies, which ranged from making health banana scooters in the Foundation Stage, Hand or Personal Hygiene across most year groups, First Aid training in Y4 and Circuit Training and measuring heart rates in Y5 & Y6.

On the afternoon of Wednesday 18th May, they also hosted another successful Community Health Fayre. Many of the agencies who kindly gave up their time for workshops during the week, also came to support the Health Fayre as well as a wide variety of representatives from other local and national organisations, such as SureStart, People’s Information Network, Macmillan, NSPCC, Age UK and Normanby Methodist Church. There were also fun family fitness activities organised by Everyone Active and students from Redcar and Cleveland College as well as their very own sports coaches, Miss Conroy and Mr Robinson. The school nurses were on hand to chat to parents about any issues from head lice to stages of development. Normanby Dental Surgery came along to promote good dental health and Girl Guiding and Scouts were also represented. The children enjoyed kite-making activities with staff from Flatts Lane Woodlands Centre and there were healthy snacks to try, such as fruit kebabs and smoothies from the Smoothie Bike. It was wonderful to see the community coming together and Normanby Primary families were very supportive of the event, which helped to raise awareness of a wide variety of health related issues and further the understanding of both children and adults alike.

The Daily Mile
The aim of the Daily Mile is to improve the physical, mental, emotional and social health and wellbeing
of our children – regardless of age or personal circumstances. It is aimed at Primary and nursery age
• It takes place over just 15 minutes, with children averaging a mile each day.
• Children run outside in the fresh air – and the weather is a benefit, not a barrier.
• There’s no set up, tidy up, or equipment required.
• Children run in their uniforms so no kit or changing time is needed.
• It’s social, non-competitive and fun.
It’s fully inclusive; every child succeeds, whatever their circumstances, age or ability.
To make it easy for you to implement The Daily Mile website has everything you need to get started; a
booklet containing all the information you require, a PowerPoint presentation, a template letter for
parents/carers, and a sample risk assessment.
