TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What an exciting, but busy week this has been in the life of the school.
Reddam Idol and Battle of the Bands is the final Music concert of the year and is always a
special event. This year we were joined by April Rose Pengilly, daughter of INXS member Kirk
Pengilly, as the adjudicator. In a closely fought band battle, April finally awarded a perfect 10
to Senior Band 'The Goldsteins', making it hard for them to be beaten. However, with the au-
dience vote on their side 'Little Monsters' came close to toppling them from 1st place. In the
final count though 'The Goldsteins' got there and were crowned winners in the Battle of the
Bands for 2016.
The Reddam Idol solos were also of a very high standard and April was able to award two
perfect 10 scores - one to Year 7 student Ruby Glazer and the other to Avital Greenberg from
Year 10. Avital's audience vote was overwhelming and she took out 1st Place for 2016.
In addition, it is worth mentioning that we were filmed by ABC television for a documentary
which will air next October. This documentary follows the activities of 'Nippers' from around
NSW and Tyler Davis from Year 7 is one such student. The producers were keen to show other
sides of participant’s lives and Tyler was excited to share his experience of performing with his
friends in the Rock band 'Syndicate', which comprises Bryn Feneley, Bella Hurwit, Miles Born-
man. This documentary will be a part of the launch of ABCme which replaces ABCKids next
year.

On Tuesday the Year 12 Formal was held at the Royal Motor Yacht Club. The Class of 2016’s final
farewell was as fantastic an event as I have ever experienced. Not even the rain could dampen
their enthusiasm and camaraderie. This group of students have set the bar exceptionally high on
the positive effect felt throughout the cohort of being cohesive and supportive of one another.
Thank you to Danielle Loewensohn for her organisation of the event. The parents also enjoyed the
pre-drinks on the rooftop: an initiative that has really taken off. A nostalgic farewell indeed.

The Sports Awards on Tuesday Evening, honouring the students who perform at the highest level on
the sports field, was a great celebration of talent. It is amazing when one gets a hall full of sports-
men and women and one shares their success stories to see the diversity and depth of sporting tal-
ent we have at Reddam. One is left in awe of the great variety and high level of performance
achieved by some of our students.
The Dance Showcase on Wednesday evening was a reminder of the grace, poise, rhythm and co-
hesion that is developed in dance classes. Their synchronization was evidence of the hours of work
that they put into perfecting a routine. The transitions between performances were slick and the
evening ran like clockwork. Ms. Collier you have developed a great culture in the Reddam Dance
Community, thank you and well done.

The RHAP awards on Thursday evening at UNSW was the opportunity to reward students for their
contributions to the performing arts at Reddam. The evening also gave parents and students a snip-
pet of the cultural diversity and depth of talent in dance, drama, music and public speaking. An-
other successful evening where one realizes the immense talent that abounds at Reddam. We are
indeed a fortunate school to have, not only the teachers who can inspire that level of perfor-
mance, but students who can rise to the challenge and produce work of such a high standard.
The Remembrance Day assembly on Friday gave students the opportunity to pause in their very
busy schedules and reflect with gratitude on the ultimate sacrifice made by so many in the various
wars Australia has been involved in through the years. The solemn and respectful manner in which
the ceremony is conducted ensures that these sacrifices are not forgotten from generation to gen-
eration.

Will Harper played in the Indoor Hockey U13 State Championships last weekend.
Will has had a great year with hockey, playing U13 and U15s for UNSW and making the repre-
sentative teams for both field and indoor hockey for Sydney East U13 boys. Over the week-
end, the indoor State Championships were held on the Central Coast. Sydney East played in
division 1 and was outclassed by the country teams. The boy’s skills developed wonderfully
with the tough competition and they played in good spirits and pushed themselves to their
limits.
This coming Monday evening is our Annual Reddam House Public Speaking Competition. Students
have all presented their speeches in class and the top students in each grade were selected to
compete in this event. The competition was very intense just to make the finals and the speeches
are really fabulous. You also get to see a side of the students you might not have seen before as
they share some of their wonderful ideas and experiences. The competition takes place on Levels
3 and 4, with Year 7 in Room 3.8, Year 8 in Room 4.1 and Year 9 in Room 4.7. All year groups speak
simultaneously which means you can either sit with one year group or move between them. After
the adjudication, the winners from each year group present their speeches to the entire audience.
Next week is Revision Week where students are to ensure that they have all that is required. We are
encouraging students to start studying together and share resources with each other in prepara-
tion for examinations. The attitude of sharing is one that we have found works best for senior stu-
dents as they tackle the HSC. I am so impressed with the culture of collaboration that is starting to
take off at the school. An example is Amanda Reid who has been using an app to do just this. It is
called "Quizlet". She has created notes for all of her subjects and the app creates online flashcards,
tests etc for you. The entire 9R Science class has been using this app all year and they swear by it.
She shared the concept in assembly on Friday.
All the best for the week ahead,
Dave Pitcairn

Artist statement for “I’m Neither” :
The idea for this artwork was to depict a vis-
ually genderqueer figure in representation
of non binary and the LGBTQ+ community.
Strongly influenced by people in my life as-
sociating with neither gender and preferring
to be called by the pronouns of “they” and
“them” rather than definitively masculine or
feminine ones. The world is not black and
white nor are the beings inhabiting it. So
who we decide to be as people in our sexu-
ality and physical display is our choice and
our own personal beauty that descends
and exceeds societal expectations and
standards.
Artist Statement for “ ָמָמה : ”(Silence)דְּ
Is our self harm our choice but rather the
ever festering pressure from the world
around us? Wrapping around our vocal
chords quenching our will to speak and for
that moment we can almost dissolve and
evaporate into our ancestors remains. A
loneliness that lives and breathes beneath
the skin. We are someone else in a re-
leased cry with the knowledge of what
true silence feels like.

Holly Cole-Haven – Monte Rosa

Bella Hurwit from Year 8 was invited to present her pitch on custom designed guitar picks called ‘PickPocket’ .
This is what Bella had to say about her experience: “I went to the Entrepreneurship competition
held at the new business centre at The Scots College. I pitched them my idea about guitar picks and they asked me questions about how I created my designs. It was very nerve racking but fun because I got to network with a lot of entrepreneurs and I also got to sell my product”.
