Thus, it is imperative that we put forth our best efforts to teach students the right and ethical way to use technology, otherwise they will undoubtedly learn the wrong ways. It has truly been a wonderful year. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to work with your students. They bring life and energy to this building and help to make it a great place to work! From the Principal’sDesk…

As the end of the year quickly approaches, students have going on their class field trips and preparing to send another great 5th grade class to the hallowed halls of SMS. It has been a busy and productive 4th quarter at SES. We celebrated the end of PARCC testing by attending “Music Man Jr.” at the Little Theatre on the Square. Students enjoyed the production and getting the opportunity to see some of their fellow classmates perform. Before Spring Break, students also got to participate in our first Tech/Reading Day at SES. First grade had a very special visitor on April 19, 2017. Trenton Polley, brother of River, came and read a story in Spanish and then English. The students were very excited about someday learning

Spanish. (Photo provided by Mrs. Becker)

Students Remember The Holocaust with Butterfly Project

In honor of Yom Hashoah (internationally recognized Holocaust Remembrance Day on 4/24/17), students, faculty, and staff across the district came together to make butterflies to represent the children who were killed in the Holocaust. Each butterfly displayed has a name or initials with the age of one of those children. Between the painted, drawn, and folded origami butterflies, there are over 1,900 as a part of this display. Pictures submitted by Mrs. Tara Bates, Ms. Jaclyn Lindberg, Ms. Becky Lawson, and Mrs. Cami Badman.

These pillows are part of a project completed by students in Mrs. Schafer's 6th hour FCS II class. Students sewed all of the felt and embroidery detail by hand and finished construction of the pillow with the sewing machine. In class, students spent time practicing hand stitching and sewing on buttons so they can repair their own clothes. (Students pictured are Bryce Hubbard with the turtle pillow and Tommy Schibur with the dolphin).

Elementary School Thanks Box Tops for Education Donors

Sullivan Elementary School is enrolled in one of the best-known fundraising programs in the nation, Box Tops for Education. By participating in the program, our school has the potential to earn up to $20,000 each year. As you know, school budgets are always tight, and anything we can do to improve our students’ education is our first priority. (FYI—each box top that is able to be redeemed is worth $.10). Sullivan Elementary School PTO submits box tops for SES. Their goal each year is to submit at least $4,000 worth of box tops that increases their budget to put back into Sullivan Elementary School. Every few weeks a different contest has been run to entice students to submit their box tops. Sometimes there are class contests while other times there are individual prizes. This year more than $3,300 has been earned through our Box Tops submissions. As the school year winds down students are working towards class ice cream parties by submitting 200 box tops per class.

For the community to be involved, if you do not have a child at SES to give box tops to please drop them off at Sullivan Elementary School. There are also a few boxes around town, and those will be updated at the beginning of the next school year. This year the Sullivan Elementary School would like to recognize sponsors for Box Tops Contests. These include: Central Roofing, Moultrie County Farm Bureau, Amanda Britton, SES PTO, James and Erica Lehman, Nick and Ginger Voegel, Roger and Verna Tice, Don and Marta Lockwood, Country Financial-Elizabeth Houser, Stifel/Roger Tice, Industrial Martial Arts, KaskaskiaValley Animal Hospital and Sloan Implement Company/Shelbyville Location. Remember Box Tops help earn money for our school. Sullivan Elementary School PTO uses funds for classroom supplies, subscriptions, playground improvements, field trips, and more. Continue to support SES PTO by turning in box tops. Contact Ginger Voegel 2016-2017 SES PTO Box Tops Coordinator at [email protected] for more

Sullivan FFA Earns Section Bankers Plaque, Moves on to Nationals

The FFA’s National Chapter Award program recognizes the top FFA chapters with innovative activities in each of the three divisions: Growing leaders, building communities and strengthening agriculture. Recognition occurs at the local, state, and national levels. The FFA Chapter’s Program of Activities are evaluated, and rated as Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Superior Chapters in each of three divisions and an overall rating is presented. The Sullivan FFA was notified that the chapter had been designated a Gold Emblem Chapter in each of the three divisions, and a Gold Emblem Chapter overall. Furthermore, Sullivan FFA was named the Section Winner in all three divisions and was also named the winner of the Section Bankers Plaque for the Top Overall Program of Activities in the Section. After the section and state judging was completed, the National Finalists were selected from the group of National Gold Emblem Chapters. The Sullivan FFA was named one of the National Finalists, advancing to the National judging held this summer. Sullivan was one of only two FFA Chapters in the District, who were named National Finalists in this award program.

In the four-square above, Mr. Rogers and Mrs. Garrett’s 7th grade classes recently created solar ovens to study radiant energy. Classes were able to use Labquest units purchased from a recent SCEF grant. While using blue toothed temperature probes, students were able to collect data and create graphs on their iPads simultaneously. Students also used the new technology to test radiant energy absorbed in a variety of materials. Photos provided by Nicole Garrett.

FCCLA members, right and below, went on a field trip to Adventures in Time and Space Escape Room in Urbana. Students were divided in two groups and took part in two different themed escape rooms picture of the entire group in front of the carousel at the Market Place Mall in Champaign. Members had to earn 85 points and do at least one trash pick-up in order to attend the reward field trip. Photos provided by Sheri Schafer

Monkeys and parrots and sloths, Oh My! First grade students spent time at the end of April, early May have been learning all about the Amazon rainforest. The students even got the chance to build one of their own. It included red-eye tree frogs, anteaters, bromeliads, morpho butterflies, and Venus flytraps. Swing by and visit before the end of school! Sullivan High School’s National English Honor Society celebrated its senior members in April with an annual cording ceremony. The ceremony was held on the morning of Tuesday, April 25 to present all outgoing senior members with their graduation cords. A light breakfast was served before the ceremony began, and a total of 21 seniors were given their cords. Maddie Keller was also presented with a medal to wear at graduation as the group's president. English teacher Cami Badman is the group’s sponsor with English teachers Lesley Banks and Rebecca Lawson serving as Faculty Advisers. Photo by Lesley Banks.

Throughout the course of the year, members of the high school's NEHS have exchanged letters with elementary schoolers through the group's Pen Pal program. Students from Mrs. Hendry and Mrs. Lehman's fourth grade classes were finally able to meet their pals on March 2 during an afternoon meet-up organized by the group. Pen-Pals snacked on cookies while completing final activities for the year and talking with each other. Photo provided by Cami Badman, NEHS sponsor.

Pictured above, Sullivan Middle School recognized students at the end of the 4th quarter who excelled in and out of the classroom. The students, and their families, were invited to share in a breakfast with staff to honor their hard work. Pictured to the right, those recognized for fourth quarter were Noah Bates, Cooper Browne, Reagan Crouse, Shawn Eccles, Jerra Goad, Carsyn Seeley, Jayden Troxell, Zoe Walton, Makayla Weybright, and Emily White. Above, Cheryl Wildman has been a special education teacher at Sullivan Schools for the last nine years and we want to wish her the best in her retirement. Wildman has worked with students in middle school and high school programs. She was very devoted to the students she worked with and they will all miss her. Wildman’s patience and caring attitude have gone a long way in helping our students succeed. In addition to teaching, she has helped with the Special Olympics, events planned by the Helping Hands Organization, and she has taken tickets at many ballgames. Hats off to Mrs. Wildman in her retirement and hope that she enjoys traveling and time with her grandchildren! Photo by Yearbook Staff.

Pictured above, Sullivan Schools would like to thank Mrs. Sue Hughes for her 20 years of service as a paraprofessional in the district. Hughes has worked in all three buildings and is devoted to students of all ages. She has always been very organized and willing to go the extra mile to do what is best for kids. In addition to being a paraprofessional, she has supervised students in the breakfast programs, taken tickets at many ballgames, and has also helped with supervision on an occasional bus route. We wish her the best in her retirement and hope that she enjoys time with her grandchildren!

Congrats, Retirees!

Students in Mrs. Auten's second grade class completed a special animal project this quarter. The class created animal reports and artwork to go along with their study. After selecting an animal, each student used various resources to find out where their animal lived, what it looked like, and what and how it ate to survive. Once the information had been gathered, they organized it into a report. Then the students decided they wanted to type their final copy in the computer lab. After their reports were finished, the students worked to create a sketch of their animal living in its habitat. They used oil pastels and construction paper to create a mixed-media piece of artwork. When their artwork was complete, they practiced reading their report orally using their best speaking skills and used their artwork to point out special features of their animal. Their final task, was to present their new knowledge to their classmates.

It's Test Day! These nine students worked extremely hard this year to prepare for the AP Spanish exam. Students came to school on their Fridays off to practice for the test. I'm very proud of these amazing kids. I'm going to miss them very much. "Todos sus esfuerzos valdrán la pena." Photo provided by Mrs. King.

The Spanish III class recently learned about the different cultures that invaded Spain. Students had to make the traditional food and also come dressed in the traditional clothing of the times. The students enjoyed eating the traditional Spanish "Tapas.” Photo provided by Mrs. King.

Pictured left, right and above, Sullivan High School Spanish Club members enjoyed some Colombian food on a recent trip to Chicago. Some of these fine looking students graduated on Sunday, May 21, 2017, but I bet they will never forget this trip. Photos provided by Mrs. King.

SES MIND (Math Is Not Difficult) Winners

First Grade

Third Grade

Fifth Grade

At SES, we recognize students who go above and beyond expectations by giving them "Gold Slips." Here are the SES Gold Slip winners from April and May (as pictured from left to right): Cali Szabo and Emmersyn Jianonni (not pictured) helped a kindergarten student clean up his spilled tray in the cafeteria. Carigan Cole observed two students working together and noticed that one of the students was getting frustrated. Carigan asked if she could help the frustrated student because she felt she could encourage him and teach him the concept. Cannin Hall finished early during art class. He started washing out paint brushes when students finished painting. When Mrs. Auten checked the sink he was using it was spotless! Cannin showed respect to Mr. Crowe and our school by making sure he left no mess. Thanks Cannin! Aceon Fryman helped the cafeteria staff clean up the kitchen after lunch. Nevaeh Wilson and Alyssa Ray took it upon themselves to clean up a paint mess that was in the hallway. They are both very helpful throughout the year and take pride in their school!

Gold Slip Winners

Pictured directly above and above and to the right, and to the immediate right, all of these third grade students have become members of M.I.N.D. All photos on this page were provided by Dan Allen, SES Principal.
