Transportation and Housing Forum Our Transportation and Housing Forum, chaired by Greg Greenway, provides  its committee members with a quarterly update on key Transportation and Housing projects and advocacy group that are continually in the works to improve our county commute patterns and housing issues. 2017 was an exciting year for the Chamber with regards to Transportation and Housing. When $647 million funding grant was held in the balance by the FTA, and threatened to stop the start of the Caltrain electrification efforts on the  Peninsula, our Chamber Board went on record again to express its support of the Caltrain Electrification Project. The non-stop efforts of our Board members who worked tirelessly to push for approval of the grant, is a  testament to their commitment, for improving our region’s transit network.

Here is a complete list of all Transportation and Housing Initiatives and  Projects supported by the Chamber in 2017:

• Homes for All San Mateo County – Our Chamber was the first organization to go on record in May 2017 to support the County’s Homes for All Initiative.

• Peninsula Mobility Group - A coalition of private employers, public agency employers, Bay Area business associations and community leaders focused on improving mobility on the Peninsula Corridor.

• 2821 El Camino Real Project; This residential use only project is located on .59 acres.  100% of the units will be affordable at 60% of area median income or below with 17 units per acre planned. Palo Alto Housing:  Conceptual Endorsement Request Approved

Business and Governmental Relations CommitteeOur Business and Governmental Relations Committee, chaired by Mario Rendon is the perfect way to stay informed of the current legislative issues. These quarterly meetings provide members of the business community, legislative snapshots from local, county, state, and  federal representatives. Issues covered include proposed city fee modifications, Federal healthcare reform legislation updates, local minimum wage increase requirements, and much more.

In May 2017, this committee approved supporting SB17 promoting drug-pricing transparency, ensuring that businesses will continue to operate in the most cost- effective way possible in order to provide affordable prescription medication to Californians.

The Chamber’s 3rd Annual Legislative Bus Trip to  Sacramento was a huge success. Organized by Mario Rendon and Stacey Wagner, this bus trip gave participants an informative and highly accessed look into our state and local government, as well as meet with our local state legislators Senator Jerry Hill, Assemblymember Kevin Mullin, Assemblymember Marc Berman and  Assemblymember Phil Ting. Lunch included an insight-ful panel of lobbyists who shared their insider views on current legislation.

REDWOOD CITY IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION (RCIA)The Chamber has successfully administered the Non-Profit Redwood City Improvement Association in contract with the City of Redwood City for the past 3 years.  With a very involved, all volunteer Board of Directors made up of Property Owners, Business Professionals & Residents from the Red-wood City community, many improvements in the downtown district have occurred.  In 2017, downtown Redwood City benefitted from the following improvements:

• Funded the installation six interactive & charming murals throughout the downtown core. Jane Kim, a local artist from Cole Valley, San Francisco, completed artwork. A variety of animals will be included in the murals like bald eagles, a fox, squirrels, deer, a Great Blue Heron, and a  domestic dog.

• Released in Spring 2017, a 3-D video mapping light show in honor of Redwood City’s 150th anniversary. The show, titled RWC 150, depicts a mysterious time-travelling robot, from the days of redwood forests, through the hippie movement, and into the rise of Silicon Valley.

• Installed 30 green and blue umbrellas in Downtown Redwood City and 10 tables and chair sets along Theatre Way. This included 20 umbrellas in the Courthouse Square and 10 umbrellas on Theatre Way accompanied by 10 tables — each with four chairs, activating Downtown Redwood City’s public spaces and making the Downtown a more desirable place to come and enjoy.

• Purchased 15 doggie bag dispensers around Downtown Redwood City to make the Downtown more pet friendly and maintain the cleanliness of the area. The City of Redwood City helped the RCIA by installing the dispensers scattered throughout Downtown Redwood City, making it easily accessible for pet owners.

• Invested $10,000 to install four new automated external defibrillator (AED) units in Downtown Redwood City. The City of Redwood City Fire Department & Public Works Services Department installed the AED units in centrally located downtown locations, with the potential for additional locations in the future.
