May - June 2016

Dear GSSCC Members,

The GSSCC held a “Beginner’s Workshop” on Saturday, March 19. Mike Epperson gave an informative, attention-grabbing lecture on getting started with genealogy. The lecture was well-

attended and received, with great handouts.

At our April general meeting we had a last minute speaker cancellation. Fortunately, Karen Theriot Reader graciously offered to present her favorite topic, “Find a Grave.” We are still getting positive feedback from this wonderful presentation and we are most grateful to Karen for stepping in at the last minute. Her handouts for this lecture are posted on the GSSCC website.

On April 14, the GSSCC held a “Volunteer and Staffer Luncheon” at Bruno’s BBQ in Scotts Valley. In addition to a complimentary buffet luncheon, there was a free raffle with ten door prizes. Member Mary Parker graciously donated the prizes and Program Chair Judy Goldman coordinated the lovely luncheon. Thank you, Mary and Judy!

Over the course of the past year, Dan Spelce and Mike Epperson have been holding a number of DNA focus group meetings the same day as our general meetings. Focus groups are popular and well-attended. On May 5, members Chuck Wildman and Dave Osterhoudt will present a focus group entitled “GEDCOM & What Options Are Available With FTM” See page 2 for more details. If there is enough interest, we will continue with this workshop in June

GSSCC elections will be held at the June 2 monthly meeting prior to our presentation. All members are encouraged to participate and send

submissions to the nomination committee (see page 3). We are thankful and pleased that Gail Burk has agreed to run the elections for us. Please note that, with the consent of the nominee, nominations may be taken from the floor.

If you are a new volunteer or new staffer during the period of January 1, 2016 thru April 30, 2016, your name will be entered into a drawing to win a free book of your choice. The winner will be announced at the GSSCC May 5 general meeting and you need not be present to win. Thank you, Bill Patterson, for initiating this fun contest!

We offer, free of charge, several workshops and focus group meetings throughout the year. If you are willing and able to facilitate a workshop or general meeting presentation, please contact our Program Chair Judy Goldman at [email protected].

Dave Osterhoudt has graciously placed all of the 2015 & 2016 editions of Redwood Roots on the members’ only document portion of the GSSCC website http://scgensoc.org/. He will soon be posting all of the 2014 newsletters. Thank you, Dave, for this wonderful website feature. The password for GSSCC members only is “redwood”, all lower caps. GEDCOM & What Options Are Available With FTM

At the beginning of this focus group, Dave Osterhoudt will briefly cover the fundamentals of using GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communication). Chuck Wildman will continue this discussion and examine options and choices available for Family Tree Maker users.

Do you plan to stay on FTM “as-is” or proceed to move your database to another genealogical software? If you move your FTM database, what data considerations and trade-offs will you need to consider? We will talk about choices as well as encourage an exchange of information from other society member experiences. Together, we can collectively benefit from an open discussion on the pros and cons of the alternatives of using Family Tree Maker and GEDCOM. There will be a break for lunch before the general meeting starts at 1:00 pm.

Please sign up at http://ftm-gedcom-workshop.weebly.com/ and fill out the brief survey to assist us in determining your level of needs.

Discovering Your German Roots: The Great Migration 1815-1914

More than twenty percent of all Americans claim primarily German descent, and many more have at least one German ancestor. It continues to be the largest single ethnic component of the American population.

To the delight of their descendants, the documentary sources available in Germany, many of them now available in the U.S. online and on microfilm. These facilitate the assembly of family trees of great age and depth, often back to the 1500s, even for simple peasant stock (which includes nearly all of us). It is not unusual for the documented family tree of one German immigrant to contain as many as 300 ancestors.

This presentation and discussion will guide you in the challenging task of discovering the hometown of your German ancestors, even if they arrived 150 years ago and then did everything they could to conceal their origins from their descendants. With that information in hand, we will then review how to build a family tree using original sources. Researchers at all levels are welcome. Remember that some of the best tips come from those alongside of you who are puzzling over the same questions.

Robert Jackson holds a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University. After several years’ teaching at the college level, he pursued a career in banking and finance. Since retiring he has assisted a variety of not-for-profit and community organizations and enjoyed his hobbies of genealogy and tennis. He lives in Berkeley, is devoted to his wife, and is very proud

of his daughter, a recent graduate of Bennington College, Vermont.

GSSCC on Facebook

By Janine Charlton

Thanks to the initiative and proposal made by member Brian Scanlon last year, the GSSCC has a private group page on Facebook. We began with 12 of our members; currently we are up to 71. Other societies and history groups have found great success in using Facebook as a supplement to their traditional website, as it better supports interactivity among members, and creates a friendlier place to share information with other members. Some of the things we share/have shared are recommended genealogy websites, upcoming events, and friendly exchanges of genealogical information. So far, no one has asked to be removed from the private group as we keep our postings minimal. The group has been set up in a way that is private and secure. Membership is by invitation only, so only invited GSSCC members can view and interact with other GSSCC members; this should alleviate any privacy concerns. Your posts and communications are kept entirely isolated within the group. Facebook calls this type of group a "Secret Group". The GSSCC secret group name on Facebook is “Santa Cruz Genealogy Society". Over the course of the past few months I have not been diligent about sending member invites. If you are interested in joining, let me know at [email protected] and I will send you an invitation. Please note there are no charges incurred by creating or joining the group and participation is totally optional.

HELP WANTED: Speakers & Workshop Facilitators

By Judy Goldman One great way to volunteer at the GSSCC is offering to present a one and a half hour genealogical topic at one of our general meetings, or facilitate a one hour workshop before one of our general meetings. We have a variety of multi-talented members and we are looking for them to share their expertise with the GSSCC membership. Here are just some ideas for workshops or presentations to spark your imagination:

• Genealogical database(s)

• Website(s) that you are very familiar with

• Special state/country information you

would like to share (German, Irish, UK,

Canada, or other special interest group)

• Organizing your family history

• Writing workshop

• Using Historical Maps and Atlases

April 14

th Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

The GSSCC hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at Bruno’s BBQ in Scotts Valley with a complimentary buffet lunch and fun party to thank our volunteers for all they do throughout the year.

Mary Parker’s wonderful donated genealogical books and other gift items were quite a hit! Everyone got a free raffle ticket and the drawing was right after lunch. There were 22 attendees, the food was delicious, and everyone had great fun. Judy Goldman brought Pacific Cookie Company chocolate chip cookies that were freshly baked in the morning. (Mmmmmm.......) Ancestor stories were shared to the delight of all.

Don’t believe it was that awesome? Here are just a couple of quotes about the event:

“The luncheon was a lot of fun! There are not that many groups of people that I feel perfectly comfortable with. I enjoyed talking with every single person I had the privilege of meeting and loved your family stories. It really makes a difference when you have a shared interest that you love! Thank you GSSCC for treating the volunteers. The salad and cookies were delicious. I loved my raffle win: a pocket size magnifying glass with case from Placerville Historical Society!” --Dancy Girot

“It was fun meeting new people and making new connections for my genealogy search. It was also fun listening to the stories from other people at my table. I'm sorry that I couldn't stay longer...” --Helene Tick

Impressions of RootsMagic 7 And Heredis 2015 As I Convert From

Family Tree Maker 2014

By Charles “Chuck” Wildman

I presently use Family Tree Maker 2014 (also known as FTM), and have been using this software for 15 years. I wouldn’t consider myself an expert user with FTM software, but I have worked in the computer industry since the 1970’s, including a brief job testing corporate software while working at Intel Corporation, which helps me to dig down into how things work.

Why I’m moving out of Family Tree Maker: I prefer to have all my ancestry data available on my personal computer and not on the internet for privacy reasons. I enjoyed the FTM software functionality on my personal computer and found it to be more capable of creating and managing my data compared to Ancestry.com online. On my computers, I can work off-line and not have to be connected to the internet. The types of reports for printing were reduced significantly in my opinion. The addition of the timeline historical events mixed in my information wasn’t helpful to me. I recently noticed that the source content when merging information from another users’ tree was not captured – it was just a notation that something had been copied without details.

From on-line reviews and computer blogs I have narrowed my focus on two software products: RootsMagic 7 and Heredis 2015. Below is a list of pros and cons that I’ve discovered in reviewing them that you may wish to consider if you are considering moving from Family Tree Maker to new software. A disclaimer: I don’t have any financial or other connection to either of these two software programs or companies.

My experiences with RootsMagic 7 (also known as RM7)

A webinar Link: http://www.rootsmagic.com/Webinars/ “1. Getting Started with RootsMagic”.

o This software gives very detailed user control

over every aspect of their data. You may have

to do more data entry in forms and sources

than you did in FTM.

o The main screen contains a five generation

family tree in simple text format boxes. On the

screen to the left is a list of people in the

database. Double clicking a person opens an

edit form.

o “Color Coding” a Family lineage of a person

and their family is available for easy

identification on screen or in lists.

o More than one RootsMagic database can open

at the same time, which means that you can

“drag and drop” people and groups from one

family tree database into another database.

o All media items (photos, documents, records

like census scans, etc.) are contained in one

Media Folder. The media item is only a link to

the actual media file. A command is available

to recheck/relink media. No folders can be

used in the media folder to organize the files.

o Source and Citation data is manually captured.

Hints are displayed for a person (with some

automated information capturing integrated

with MyHeritage and FamilySearch). A new

(empty) source form does provide suggestions

and example text indicating what type of data

goes into each box in the form.

o There are lots of on-line help and support

provided through their website:

http://www.RootsMagic.com/Community

User groups, message boards, Facebook group

http://www.rootsmagic.com/Webinars/

Webinars for on-line learning of the software

https://www.youtube.com/user/RootsMagicTV

Roots Magic TV to see video “how-to” guides

o A flash drive can be used to write database

backups (no media or media changes). The

“RootsMagic 7 To-Go” program requires several

steps to use and locations to be reset each

time it is used – I found that awkward.

Page 9: REDWOOD ROOTSscgensoc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/2016-May-Jun-RR-Newsle… · Members are paid through June 30, 2016. A renewal form will be in the next Redwood Roots for July

Page 9 Redwood Roots - The Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz County Newsletter

My experiences with Heredis 2015

(French Company since 1994) o Demonstration of some new features in

YouTube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W72UZhu

m5Hw

o Many of the demonstrated features are NOT

available in RootsMagic 7, such as:

• Web capture and person/event attachment

• Photo person identification and editing

• Signature capture

• Shared events with added participants

• Visual maps of Ancestors location or

movement over time

o The main screen has four generations shown

with a small picture in the box for each person.

Only the center of the main screen changes as

the user switches between persons (no pop-up

forms). A persons list appears on the left side

of the main screen, with content tabs at the

top for “Family, Data, Lineage, Search”.

o There is only one User Guide Document (PDF

file) and very few videos for help. There is one

Heredis Forum to answer questions and I have

seen references to a Facebook Group page.

o Each time a media file is added to the

database, it is placed into a separate

numbered folder in a Media folder.

o The photo “identification” feature for

individuals in particular photo is very nice. The

small identification snapshot is automatically

stored with each individual and allows the user

to return to the original photo simply by

clicking on the small photo.

o A copy of the complete database (data and

media) can be setup for automatic backup of

changed files to another disk drive using USB

port or WiFi connection. The backup option

happens at each software exit.

o The data transfer from FTM must be done by

use of a GEDCOM file. Some of the linkages to

the graphics files for sources were lost.

Spotlight on Dottie Kokeš Speidel

I come from a family that saved things. When my parents died I had boxes of papers from my father (an only child) and from my mother whose two brothers were happy to have her tote the boxes home. As I was also an only child, I had no choice: Genealogy chose me and curiosity led me on.

All of my grandparents were immigrants from what is now the Czech Republic. My parents apparently wanted me to “be an American,” and didn’t teach me the language (eliminating the need to whisper Christmas secrets; they could talk in Czech).

With my boxes of papers I was overjoyed to discover an excellent translator living nearby. I was lucky to live in Minnesota where the Czechoslovak Genealogical Society was being organized soon after the 1989 “Velvet Revolution.” Long cut off from their homeland by Nazis and Communist domination, American Czechs’ interest in genealogy soon blossomed and the genealogy collection expanded to several thousand items and publications of several books in translation.

Trips abroad have followed, inspired partly by the affection of my paternal grandfather for his favorite brother who remained behind to become a schoolmaster when their father and siblings left for America in 1880. Their heartwarming way of sending picture calendars at the start of each new year (except when interrupted by war and politics) encouraged contact of our younger generations which has strengthened during my trips and their visits to America. Our extended family in America has translated and published an immigration chronicle written by the “favorite brother left behind” based on letters received describing the new world.

I’ve completed enough to satisfy myself; now I’m ready to tackle research and writing about my husband’s German, English, and Swedish ancestors. My challenge -- it seems they didn’t save anything at all! I’ll see you at the library!

Do You Have Roots in Santa Cruz County?

If so, put our research team to work for you. We will search our own holdings and those of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries on your behalf. We have access to area newspapers on microfilm, including the Santa Cruz Sentinel, the Santa Cruz Surf and the Santa Cruz Evening News. We have local cemetery listings, large and small, plus county voter records and vital statistics, city directories dating from the early 1900s, and access to The GSSCC Folks File database which includes thousands of names of past Santa Cruz residents.

A modest charge of $15 gets the ball rolling. This entitles you to an initial evaluation and one hour of research time. Many requests can be answered in this time. If more time is required to complete the task, or if new opportunities for further research are discovered, we will furnish a report outlining a research plan with an estimate of any additional cost.

If interested, visit our website at http://scgensoc.org/research-assistance/, then download and complete the Research Assistance Form with as much detail about the subject as you can provide. Make your check payable to “GSSCC” and send your submission to: Research Coordinator, GSSCC, PO Box 72, Santa Cruz, CA 95063-0072. For additional questions, please email [email protected].
