  • Membership Meeting, Mar 18, 2014 We had 32 members attend this months membership

meeting. The Wild Game Dinner was a big success and

I was glad to see a lot of our new members present, it

would be even nicer to see more of our mem-bers/Board Members present. We put these functions

together to raise money to help improve the Center for

you. I want to thank everyone who helped make the dinner so successful. It was a lot of work but a lot of

fun also. Thank you & Happy Easter

(P.S. we are selling Easter Eggs)

    Social Security Column

HELPING AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES By Sherita Deal

Social Security Manager in Dover, DE

The World Health Organization held the first World Health Assembly in 1948, and, be-

ginning in 1950, every year on April 7 the world comes together to observe World

Health Day. Each year, World Health Day focuses on a particular subject of interest to

    global health.

At Social Security, we focus on people’s health every day. Specifically, we provide bene-

fits for people with disabilities. To help expedite the disability process, we recently an-

nounced the addition of 25 new Compassionate Allowances conditions. These new

conditions include twelve cancers, such as prostate cancer, as well as disorders that

affect the digestive, neurological, immune, and multiple body systems.

The Compassionate Allowances program expedites disability decisions for Americans

with the most serious disabilities to ensure that they receive their benefit decisions

within days instead of months. By incorporating cutting-edge technology, the agency can

identify potential Compassionate Allowances and quickly make decisions. To date, we

have approved almost 200,000 people with severe disabilities through this fast-track

    disability process.

“We are dedicated to providing vulnerable Americans with faster access to disability

benefits through our Compassionate Allowances program,” Acting Commissioner

Carolyn W. Colvin said recently. “Social Security disability benefits are a vital lifeline

for individuals who are facing severe diseases and we must ensure that they receive the

    benefits they rightly deserve.”

While Social Security joins individuals, groups and organizations around the globe to

observe World Health Day on April 7, we work all year round to help Americans with

health issues live a healthier life. In addition to cash benefits, beneficiaries obtain

Medicare coverage after 24 months, a vital element in preserving an individual’s health

and, in the long run, world health.

  • The Frederica Senior Center s mission is to guide Delaware’s senior into a brighter future. The Center is where seniors

and or persons with disabilities join together for services, activities, socialization and nutritious home cooked meals.

Programs are designed to enhance our seniors dignity, support their independence and encourage involvement in and

with the Center and their local community.

This Membership Guidelines Booklet has been developed to enhance the experience of your participation in the Center

Activities and programs. It is the Centers priority to provide a safe, pleasant, positive, comfortable, enjoyable environ-

    ment to our members.

The Center recognizes that some behaviors may distract and disrupt for the enjoyment of the Center. That is why the

following guidelines have been set up by the Board of Directors and Staff Members in order to address any instances

that may occur and disrupt the daily routine and experience at the Center.

We all ask that you carefully read this booklet to become familiar with these guidelines in order to know what is ex-

pected from each and every member of the Frederica Senior Center.

    1. Membership is limited by the resources of the Center to individuals who are self mobile, with or without assistance

devices such as wheelchairs or walkers, independent, capable of appropriate decision making, self toileting and have

adequate appearance and hygiene to participate in daily activities. If not independent self mobile members may attend

    with a personal assistant.

    2. As a member we ask that you promote goodwill. No member shall mistreat, either verbally or physically, any other

member or staff. Mistreatment includes sexual, racial or otherwise harassing comments. Violence of any kind will not

be tolerated and shall result in immediate dismissal from the Center, and membership will be revoked immediately.

    3. Members are asked to encourage diversity. Isolation of members based on race, religion, color, sex, national origin,

sexual orientation, and or physical or mental disability shall not be tolerated.

    4. The use of illegal drugs or alcohol is not permitted on or in Center property.

    5. The rooms and equipment in the Center are for the use of the entire membership and are never for the exclusive use

of any one member. Members are expected to respect and maintain the facility and equipment they use. Members may

be liable for purposeful damage or destruction of any Center property.

    6. Members are not to use any vulgar or profane language at any time.

    7. If at any time a member has a problem of some kind, whether it be with another member, staff member, a program

or procedure in the Center, that member should report their concern to the Executive Director or Staff Member. No

member has the right to approach a guest or group of guests to voice their complaint. Complaining among other mem-

bers will not get the situation resolved but will only bring disharmony into the Center.

    8. Any criminal act committed by a member will result in immediate dismissal.

    9. Inoculations must not be done in public areas, such as dining room, lobby or kitchen.

The purpose of these guidelines is to allow everyone to richly enjoy their visit to the Center every time they are here.

It is up to each individual member to do their part in order to achieve this goal.
